Right Ive got some money and want to buy some real nappies for DD.

Im so bloody confused.

From what i can gather you have 2 options.

Nappies for cetain ages, like newborn... then you have to buy more when they get a bit bigger etc

or ones that you use from start to finish.

Whats best?

Can someone please LINK me to something??

Im just fed up now and want to choose and buy, lol

Hi I use One Life birth to potty nappies with my DD2 and they are really good. They are popper fit and need a wrap over the top which are also popper fit. Once you have bought them you only need to buy bigger wraps as you LO grows.
I hope that helps.

You need BigBadMousey really. Hopefully she'll be along...

The best advice I can give you is to see a real nappy adviser, or if that's not possible, to get one each of at least three different Nappies and have a good look at them in person.

IMO sized nappies are great, but if you are only planning to use them for one child it's not really economically viable. It's quite possible to use muslins at first and then a BTP nappy.

Don't dismiss simple old school terry square out of hand, a lot of people get on really well with them.

Will be back with links

OK...A list of questions for you...

How many will you have in nappies e.g are you planning to have more?

How old is DD now?

What washing facilities do you have access to e.g. washing machine and tumble dryer/shared facilites?

What's important...environment/practicality etc?

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 30/09/2008 20:22

Bumgenius pockets are greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeat, some might say i am biased coz i sell em - i have a dozen in my boys stash - i wouldnt use them if ithought they were a pile of poo (pardon the pun). Ooooo only two choices - well throw into that shaped and wraps, all in ones, organic, non organic, pockets, fleece lined, terrys blah blah blah.... ooo and then theres hemp, bamboo, microterry and how they are fastened - aplix, poppers, nippas, hooky things (yes im am merry)

There are a couple of us wee mumsnetters who have online shoppys as advertised inthe small business classifieds for a fee (does anyone even know these exist or am i chucking money away?). We are always happy to give lots of free impartial advise.

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 30/09/2008 20:24

Big bad mousey will be writing you a one page description/ disertation on real nappies as i type lol.

EnchantedWithEdwardCullen · 30/09/2008 21:18

DD is still in my tummy,

and im not planning on having another any time soon (she is my third)

Practicality is rife really, though im glad i wont be uusing disposables.

its so hard to just choose soemthing!

I have tried 4 different real nappies and I would recommend a 2 part nappy i.e. the nappy and a seperate wrap.

Motherease wraps are very good.

The best birth to potty nappy I have found is the Bumble which fits from about 7lbs upto 35 lbs. My DS is wearing them and he's almost 2 and there is plenty more space in them.

Do you have any friends who use real nappies?? I borrowed a couple of different ones to try them before buying.

blithedance · 30/09/2008 22:09

I would recommend trying to find a real nappy advisor and borrow a trial kit - your council might have some contacts.

Our local advisor came to my house when I was fraught and clueless and stressed. She had bundles of four sorts of nappies and talked me through them all, showed me how to put each one on the baby. Then I had a month to try them all out, wash them etc.

Then she helped me choose which ones to use, price up what I needed and gave me a discount, even sent the cashback form to the council for me.

I ended up with Motherease onesize but nearly everyone else I know uses stuffables like Fuzzi Bunz.

I cannot overstate how helpful it was to have the nappies and the advisor in RL!

The other brilliant source of advice IME is the nappylady.

IKWYM on MN you will get fifty different suggestions but you kind of need someone to take you in hand and say, "what you need dear, are two dozen of These".

chilledmama · 30/09/2008 22:13

I was just about to put in the link to the nappy Lady...they are brilliant!!! Incidentally, it was the Nappy Lady who recommended Bumbles to me but I still wasn't sure so bought a couple of bamboozles and borrowed a couple of sandys then went for the bumbles anyway!

EnchantedWithEdwardCullen · 30/09/2008 22:17

Im thinking of tots bots but am a bit confused...

some of the nappies look like they have velcro fastening but some have those 3 'armed' clips to fasten.

Do you need the clips with ALL tots bots?

OP posts:
chilledmama · 30/09/2008 22:23

no i think most nappies you can now choose between nippas, velcro or studs.
its a lot of money...try the nappy lady for best recommend

EnchantedWithEdwardCullen · 30/09/2008 22:25

im buying them from the mumsnet for sale boards 2nd hand so not as much £!

thanks x

Hia

Yes go for 2 part system the are the most reliable by far. Bumbles are the best "birth to potty" nappy and those that fasten with nappy nippa rather than velcro are better because they are more adjustable.

However bumbles may be too big on a newborn baby, they were very roomy on my 10lb babies because for the first few weeks they all have skinny legs and bottoms IYSWIM!!

Def get 2nd hand to try different things out before buying lots the same.

Motherease one size/one life - the ones with all the poppers are very bulky on small babies and not always absorbant or big enough to fit chunk large heavy wetting toddlers.

Does that help at all?

chilledmama · 30/09/2008 22:57

bumbles also do poppers which i find really adjustable because you can overlap the 2 sides but I don't think thats particularly unusual as bamboozles do it too.

mybabywakesupsinging · 01/10/2008 01:04

so my tuppence worth:
Don't buy anything to fit a newborn. they grow too fast. ds1 was out of his 3-5kg wraps in about, ooh, 3 days.
2 parts (nappy and wrap) leak less. Unless your baby has exactly the right sized legs for the holes in the one part nappy..
If you want cheap, easypeasy are doing an "ecobumble" - a shaped fleece/terry nappy which you can stuff with any old thing. I bought one and have just ordered 5 more they are 5 for £14.
Nappy nippas are fab.
We've used prefolds no problem but folded and pinned with a nappy nippa, also terry squares folded in the "jo" fold (see twinkleonthe web for folds and nice terries).
We have no tumble dryer and flat terries dry quickest.
Bamboo is very absorbent but takes longer to dry; I use it for night nappy and I have some very good bamboo boosters.

DeJaVous · 01/10/2008 07:09

Easy Peasy make great nappies. I like bamboo so prefer the Bambeasy, but their cotton nappies are great too.

Motherease wraps are generally acknowledged the gold standard. I use the Airflow (popper) but the Rikki (aplix) is also fab. All decent nappy sellers stock them.

I'm not a pocket person myself, but a lot of people like BumGenius, this is the manufacutres site but you can get them easily in the UK. NappyZone is your woman if you want to know about pockets.

I'd do more links but my internet connection is seriously messing about.

DeJaVous · 01/10/2008 07:13

Bugger, ended up having wait until morning for the internet to work again and then I forget a link anyway!
Oh and having written my last post last night there are probably a lot of Xs

needaholiday · 01/10/2008 12:20

just to add my penny too- quick flips are good from here and the wraps are excellent. You can have coloured ones from here and they are virtually leakproof and much prettier than the motherease ones.

Nippas may look scary but are easy and flexible and IMO give a better fit on any nappy than aplix or poppers do.

DonutMum · 05/10/2008 19:41

My tuppence worth - tots bots cotton sized nappies plus motherease wraps (aboslutely NOTHING better) and some blueberry minkis for posh days.

Leenie · 06/10/2008 00:57

can i just ask has anyone tried Mothercares smartnappies

tenren · 06/10/2008 08:44

I use Baby Beehinds - www.babybeehinds.co.uk

fitted cloth nappies with PUL covers. birth to toddler size. made of bamboo. have found them to be hard wearing - they come up well in the wash - and absolutely no leaks. use with a flushable liner and throw poop straight in the toilet.

really recommend them.

FloriaTosca · 06/10/2008 09:13

I used Totsbots bamboozles at first (a sized bamboo, shaped nappy, fastened with aplix(velcro) and needing a wrap)...size 1s were great from birth (7lb 13oz) to 9 months (19lb) but size 2s were too bulky for my early walker and I tried a few others, settling on the pop in by modern baby,( a lovely, applix fastened, slim fitting, birth to potty, shaped soft bamboo nappy system) and wish I had found them sooner, not cheap but worth the extra .. here if you want a look www.modernbaby.co.uk ...hope you find the right combination for you.
