9mo wetting through Size 3 Nappies ... Help!

tellyaddict · 27/09/2008 21:44

My ds is 9 months old now, a big lad (about 26lbs) and feeding 2/3 times a night at the mo. Subsequently he's wetting through his Size 3 Tots Bots Bamboozles (with an additional booster)!!

What on earth can I put on him at night???? Fed up with wet babygro and grobag in the mornings, not to mention the smell...

Anyone else got/had the same problem and overcome it, without them having a bottom three times the size it's supposed to be ??

what wraps are you using?

maybe some new wraps might be the answer?

tellyaddict · 27/09/2008 22:13

Hi Nannyl

I'm using Motherease Airflows and One Life's, so very reliable......

Thanks though

ok... are you using fabric softner or 2in1 powder or anything thst coukd be making your nappies less absorbant?

have you washed them enough so they are up to max absorbancy?

seems very odd that a 9month old should be soaking through a size 3 with ME airflow

Of he is feeding 2 / 3 times a night (not really necessary at this age) then perhaps you should change him at these oppertunites? (assuming you dont ?)

also microfibre cloths hold a lot of wee and are very thin... tesco value microfibre cloths (3 for £1) will do

DeJaVous · 27/09/2008 22:20

What sort of booster are you using? Is he doing big wees?

I think you need to layer up the boosting really. Maybe a microfiber cloth under the fleece liner and a couple of hemp boosters under that. If needs be you can put more hemp between the nappy and wrap.

morocco · 27/09/2008 22:23

do the wraps leak during the day? do they leak if you boost the nappies in the same way during the day? (wondering if the booster is making a bit of a gap between the the nappy and the wrap). Mine would wet through a similar bamboo nappy at night but it wouldn't leak onto the clothes unless something was wrong with the wrap/bits sticking out of the wrap etc

have you tried ellas house bumhuggers? you can also boost them, they are pretty solid nighttime nappies.

DeJaVous · 27/09/2008 22:37

Are you sue they are size 3? Size 2 goes up to 35lbs, TBH I'm not sure bamboozles even come in a 3. Are they maybe cotton size 3s?

Washersaurus · 27/09/2008 22:48

Tis true, you only get unbleached cotton size 3 tots bots.

I find a size 3 (cotton) tots bots with 2 microfibre boosters between nappy and fleece wrap are usually sufficient for my heavy wetters - well DS1 is now 3yo and we are starting to have problems with leaks but that is a different story

tellyaddict · 27/09/2008 22:55

Hi, yes they are definitely Size 3, maybe they aren't 'bambooxles' but they are bamboo Tots Bots Nippa style, and size 3. I'm using a Tots Bots bamboo booster, maybe I need to use more than one?

He doesn't wee through Tots Bots Cotton or Bamboo (size 2) through the day. But does wee through Ella's House Bumhugger size large!

I don't change him when feeding him during the night. He's started these extra feeds a couple of months ago, and as he is absolutely gulping it down (despite being on 3 full meals a day) I can only assume he's very hungry because he is growing so fast. I don't want to start nappy changing during the night as it will only make him wake up more and then want to play, plus I'll be even more knackered than I am already.

Washersaurus · 27/09/2008 23:00

Honestly, they don't do a size 3 in bamboo; only the bleached/unbleached cotton - and it appears they don't even do those anymore looking at their website

Is it just one particular nappy or do you have lots of them the same?

Washersaurus · 27/09/2008 23:01

Also if your airflow is too tight it will leak - it should be a bit baggy.

morocco · 27/09/2008 23:02

good grief to the bumhuggers! what exactly do you mean by he wees through them? dd's are soaked in the morning but they don't leak. do you boost them? are they the new style?

why are you using a size 3 at night and size 2 during the day btw? I am wondering if you're getting gaps round the legs where the wee is coming out?

morocco · 27/09/2008 23:03

sorry - quick fire question round

tellyaddict · 27/09/2008 23:09

I got a 'second' off Tots Bots direct as the size 2s didn't seem to be enough at night, I thought I'd try a bigger size (=more fabric).

I'm using a size L wrap, so it is baggy enough. On 2nd popper around leg (his legs are chubby) and tightest on waist.

The bumhuggers are drenched in the day after a couple of hours, others last about 4 hours before I need to change them (unless he's done a no.2 of course!). They aren't the latest bumhuggers so you can't stuff them, if I boost them at night I stick those famous microfibre cloths in , but stopped using them at night because of the massive weeing problem!

I'm trying a Size 3 Modern Baby shaped nappy tonight, so fingers crossed.....

I'd recommend buying a new style bumhugger. I have some old style ones (second hand) and they are nowhere near as good. I don;t know whether they get less absorbant with age? anyhow, I boost dd's newstyle bumhugger and in the morning the hemp part is soaking wet but it hasn't leaked through. she does smell of a hamster cage though

I don't seem to have great success with microfibre cloths. they never seemed much good to me. hemp on the other hand has always done dd proud

good luck with tonight!

tellyaddict · 27/09/2008 23:28

OK, just took my washed nappies out of the machine and checked my size 3 - I feel such an arse as it is indeed an unbleached cotton one - I'm blaming the sleep deprivation for my confusion (that and the fact they are the same colour as bamboozles which I have in size 2)....... but it still leaks!!!

I might have to invest in new bumhuggers morrocco if tonight is a disaster too!

Thanks for all the tips ladies!

ROLF

In that case, are you sure the tots boosters are bamboo? I've got some tots unbleached cotton ones that look a bit bambooish, but I've not heard of bamboo ones. Never looked into properly either though!

A single cotton booster really isn't going to cut the mustard with a heavy wetter. You need to layer quick absorbing fabric with massive absorption capacity .

Microfiber = quick absorption but doesn't hold that much

cotton = quickish absorption

Bamboo = slower absorption than cotton but holds more weight for weight

Hemp= very slow to absorb hut holds phenomenal quantities. Also very slim. I like the Ellas House ones because the hourglass shape makes them even slimmer fitting.

TBH the size 3 is probably far to big, it's meant to be from 35lbs ish. That probably isn't helping at all.

morocco · 28/09/2008 20:16

so? how did it go??

agree about the cotton not being enough for a heavy wetter at night. a good bamboo booster would be good or hemp would also work well.

another idea - do you use the same wrap during the day? if not, it could be that the wrap itself has stopped working. they do give up eventually. when that happens, they don't leak round the legs/waist but all over, almost as if there was no wrap on at all

tellyaddict · 28/09/2008 20:19

Hi Dejavous

yes just checked, the boosters are bamboo (Tots Bots had to replace them for the fleece topped boosters I'd originally ordered as they don't make them any more - either that or they've sent me the wrong ones!!).

I had success with the Modern Baby Size 3's last night, they were sopping wet but stil dry around the waist so it hadn't quite seeped up to the top by morning. I know that 3s are supposed to be for 35 or 40lbs plus but they do actually fit him, he's rather a big boy and very long - I'm 5'5 and he's right up to my crotch when standing... and is on the 98th centile, or was a few weeks ago ...). So I've solved the problem, for now, it would seem .... looks like I'll need to layer, layer, layer in a few months when he's even bigger!!

Thanks for taking the time to give me your ideas and suggestions, much appreciated !

glad the modern baby nappy worked well

DeJaVous · 28/09/2008 20:40

There is still hope, heavy wetting is sometimes just a phase.

Glad you got it sorted!

tellyaddict · 28/09/2008 20:51

Thanks ladies .

Washersaurus · 28/09/2008 20:59

Those cheapy microfibre cloths from Tescos are good if you want to try an extra layer or two of boosting btw.

Glad it sounds like you have it sorted - DS2 is only 14mo and has been wearing his brother's size 3 tots bots for months now already (partly due to my laziness with nappy sorting, and partly because he wets a lot like his brother)

You should give fleece wraps a go at night - they really do work (as long as you don't put tight pj's over the top of them )

Ceolas · 28/09/2008 21:04

washersaurus - how do the fleece wraps work? If my DD was wearing a loose-ish sleepsuit would it be OK? We co-sleep so no way I want to be damp!

Assume a poppered vest would be a no-no?

Washersaurus · 28/09/2008 21:42

The fleece wraps draw the moisture away from the skin, so it evaporates. You mustn't put anything tight over them as the moisture will wick onto that fabric instead (voice of experience).

I wouldn't put a poppered vest (well a done up one anyway) on over the top of it - I used to use the t-shirt style vests from Mothercare when DS1&2 were small, now they just wear their pj's.

From experience with DS1 I discovered that it takes a while to perfect the night nappy boosting to get it just right. We have never had any leaks or dampness with DS2 (14mo) and he co-sleeps with us most nights (whether we like it or not). He also sleeps in a grobag without a problem (on the rare occasions that he stays in his own bed all night)
