This is probably a stupid question.
But i spent a lot of money on nice shoes for DS1. 3 years on I'm wondering if i his brother can use them now he's just started walking?

Just to throw another thing in: I'm for re using them (of course if the correct size)

My sister spent a fortune on shoes for her girls ONLY ever put them in Clarkes or Start Right, had them measured every three months and I remember her being very particular about it. My niece, now 13 has bigger bunions than her 87yr old Grandmother and is considering surgery this year to remove them.

cravingaquietlife · 05/09/2008 12:42

They are really cute shoes btw, dragon.

isaidno · 05/09/2008 12:46

I would re use them.

i would reuse them.. why not, first shoes get very little wear and the child is hardly in them long enough to shape them.. older children , then I would say no.. but first shoes, can't see the problem.. assuming same size/width etc.
In fact I even considered giving my ds , my dd's first shoes as they were same size.. they are blue but have flowers and butterflies on so decided not to. But he did wear them at home one afternoon whilst I was deciding

oh dear, opinion looks split 50/50.

does this wild thought niggling at me have any influence... i don't think we'll have any more kids and it's likely the last chance to buy a pair of little red leather shoes for them. They don't tolerate cute shoes for long do they.

somebody slap me.

Hmm.
I have kept DS1's shoes in the attic and DS2 did wear a pair of his brother's shoes for a month or so this winter/spring.

He had changed sizes, and I didn't want to shell out for a new pair of winter ones in say March, when by end of April he would need lighter shoes (half sandals).

The original shoes cost 70E and are very well made - I'd rather put him in those than in a cheap pair (tried it once with DS1 who wouldn't wear them because they were uncomfy) which would give him blisters.

Am keeping DS1's shoes mostly to have a spare pair for DS2 if he gets his wet or something, I buy him a new pair when he changes size/season.

DS are 4 and 1.5 btw.

same ages as mine HSFAY.

I would prob buy new ones for 1st shoes, then I would prob start thinking, hey (by the time 2nd ones were needed) i wonder if those ones of ds1 would fit.

Then i would prob think, hey they are fine (not worn out, good quality) and prob keep doing so, unless I came across a startrite or clarks bargain ( like mostof dd's shoes have been tbh).

My dd has a trainers supplier ( eg a friend whose dd is a few sizes bigger)!!

sweetkitty · 05/09/2008 13:12

I have one DD a size 7 and one a size 8 so trainers etc don't tend to get reused but party shoes definitely, sandals anything that isn't too used.

I would say go for it.

And FWIW I think a Mum at home trying a pair of shoes on a child taking the time to look at them properly let the child wear them for 10 mins etc is better at fitting than some bored 16yo in Clarks.

piratecat · 05/09/2008 13:13

oh !! thye are very little shoes, I forgot how tiny!! um, tbh if he wasn't doing much walking, and more kinda sitting around, i would be tempted.

piratecat · 05/09/2008 13:14

totally agree sweetkitty, after some exp ihave had with fitters.

Dragonbutter · 05/09/2008 13:17

poor little mite, he hasn't had anything new. he's been wearing his brothers robeez and daisy roots til now.

roll up roll up, come and see this mother rationalize her spending habits!

It depends on how knackered they look really? My DS has some really pristine shoes that he wore (mainly indoor) for only a few months at a time which look perfect- i have stored away the nice ones for the new one. DS's manky old trainers on the other hand are only fit for the bin!

HaventSleptForAYear · 05/09/2008 13:27

Oh. To me it's different if you actually WANT to buy them!

Dragonbutter · 05/09/2008 13:28

oh i want to buy them. just that money is tight and if it's not necessary then i shouldnt really.

HaventSleptForAYear · 05/09/2008 13:29

IKWYM. I think you are old enough to prioritise your money (not saying you're old!).

If you get these, what CAN'T you get ? (ie what else would the money go for?)

HaventSleptForAYear · 05/09/2008 13:30

You know that your DS won't care either way.

At this age they scuff shoes really badly.

Are you the sort of person to be annoyed you spent all that money and now he's jumping in puddles with them?

Dragonbutter · 05/09/2008 13:33

well we're really on a no luxuries month. just not sure if these shoes are a luxury.
the money would probably be spent on groceries, petrol and nursery otherwise.

Mmmmm

No, i didn't ever use hand-me-down shoes for dd's when they were little. That said, my little ones had different width feet so it wouldn't have been appropriate.

Now, as they're older (8 and 5) i do save dd1's shoes for dd2 but never their 'every day' shoes, iykwim. Mainly because they're fit for nothing by the time they've grown out of them!

Dragonbutter · 05/09/2008 13:34

no i'm happy for him to sit in puddles in the garden. but i suppose i'd be happier if he was messing up an old pair of shoes.

I reuse shoes because I don't really believe it matters, the rest of the world doesn't seem to have the same New Fitted Shoes rule but still their children have OK feet.

dd3 (4) has never had new properly fitted shoes. we get so many lightly used shoes for her from her sisters and from friends, just loads and loads of them, many barely worn. I'll report back when she's 50 on whether it made a difference.

mustrunmore · 05/09/2008 13:39

Ds2 wears ds1's old shoes, apart from the ones he trashed so much they had to go straight in the recycling Ok, they are scuffed. But the inside is smooth , no foot indentations etc, and they are the rigt size. And given the fact that we got both ds's feet measured in 2 different clarks on one day, and they each came up with a diffrent size for each boy, I'd be inclined to trust my own judgement rather than theirs.
