Hi all

I'm starting potty training my 25mth old dd on Sat. Is there anyone else planning on starting soon that I could hold hands with!?!

Not feeling very confident aboout it, pretty sure dd is ready but she can be a stubborn little thing when she wants so not sure how its going to go!!

well i have neraly given up so many times! yesterday was better had one poo and 2 wee's in the potty, the rest of the day was lots of puddles!
today, puddles ALL morning then after dinner she weeed on the potty then 30mins later she took herself to the potty and pooed!! hip hip hooray! (she forgot to lift her skirt up so had a bit of mess, but at least she knew what she was trying to do!! )

i have found that she will only actually use it tho if no one else is in the room with her, she is very private about it!! so trying to keep an eye on her AND make her use it is a bit tricky!!

as a total beginner with DS 23 months, do you have to do rewards, and do you just put them in pants to potty train? DS will wee in the potty to please me, but not because he specially needs to.. He poos at regularish times and tells me when he's done a poo. We do have wipe clean floors . any tips much appreciated.

btw no need for anti bac wipes, hot water and detergent is enough. anti bac is overkill and leads to worse germs in the end.

Can I join?

Started potty training DS 2.5 this weekend

I know this is still quite young but he used the potty on Sat eve so thought I would just go for it.

I'm really divided between the just leave them until they are ready and the just put them in pants and go for it camp.

I want to be calm and encouraging but in truth I have been stressed, hormonal and in fear of damaging my relationship with him forever!

He can go for a long time between wees and clearly holds it in BUT he does not ask to use the potty yet. I have been relying on signs of when he needs to go and sitting him on potty with cartoons or bribe of stickers!

Yesterday I made the mistake of going out and we had 2 accidents. The second time I lost it with him burst into tears and felt guilty for the rest of the day. Great!

We have had a wee in the potty today. I am worried he is not really ready and I am being far too pushy but don't want to go backwards IYSWIM

thebecster · 03/09/2008 10:21

We managed to get everything on the potty yesterday as well - result! But he still doesn't think 'I need a wee, I'll go on the potty' it's more a case of me getting him to sit on the potty, then he does a wee iyswim. And he does the wee to get a reward (stickers) rather than thinking that it's what he wants to do for himself - he's such a little capitalist already... I've been sitting him on it every 45 mins or so, and he knows that if he does a wee he'll get to flush it down the loo and get his sticker, and he's learnt how to wee on demand at least! But I don't think he's learnt to identify the feeling of 'needing to go' yet.

He's at nursery today and they insist on pull-ups which is slightly annoying because I've got him in pants at home, and I think he might regress a bit knowing that he can wee in his pull ups if he wants. So it might be back to the drawing board on Friday - hope not, have worked really hard to get this far! It's bloomin' stressful, isn't it?

llynnnn · 04/09/2008 09:31

we are the same here! dd will go if u sit her on the potty but wont ask for it! is this normal then? wonder how long it lasts??

how did your ds get on at nursery becster? dd is there today! when i told them she was 'in training' they didnt look too impressed!! oh dear!! wonder if she will be in her pull ups by now!

roseability - how u doing? its sooo hard to know if they are really ready isnt it! but now i think if i go back to nappies all this hard work will be for nothing!!

Can't believe what I'm reading about how nurseries behave (although I know from a friend that they do potty training no favours -- her DD was dry at 18m but "too young" according to nursery so they put her back in nappies and she regressed ).

We have a CM who has been great with DD and thinks she's doing really well (and she's seen loads more kids than me potty training). We're down to a couple of accidents a day (usually due to tiredness or excitement). She even went in the supermarket today. But like everyone else's DCs, DD doesn't always ask to use the potty and sometimes flatly denies she needs it... Bribes are sometimes the only way forward .

olivo · 05/09/2008 19:28

Please don't be too quick to slate the nurseries! we have been sending DD in pull-ups instead of nappies (their request)but nursery have been putting her on the loo lots of times a day and she has been very successful!they have asked for her to be sent in pants on monday and they will take it from there for us - I love our nursery!

llynnnn · 06/09/2008 17:44

olivo i need your nursery!! dd went through 7 knickers at nursery yesterday!!! and hasnt had one accident all day today.
its not the nursery staff's fault tho, the only place they can keep the potty is a million miles away from dd's room! she has to go out her room, through the entrance hall, through the baby room and down a corridor to get to it!! thats 4 stairgates and a bit of a trek!! staff say she tells them when she wants to go but cant hold it for that long!
dd has been brilliant today tho, she has been telling me when she needs to go and has done really well. think we need to start getting rid of the chocolate bribes tho now, she will soon be the size of a house!!

oh bless your dd, llynnnn, can't believe they only have one potty! our nursery is great, they have those cute mini loos - dd LOVEs them! I'm not sure we'll have the same success at home though with a boring old loo converter seat!watch this space.....

and good luck!

yummymummy1405 · 06/09/2008 20:46

I'm starting with ds 28months on Monday. He will do a wee on the potty at night but can't decide if that's cos he needs one or like pouring it out and flushing! But as we r coming to the end of our last batch of nappies I showed him the nappy drawer and told him once these nappies are gone there are no more and you get to wear big boy pants instead. Have been Reading what other people have said about pull ups and regressing so what's the best tip fir nightime? Buying pants and a little step for the bathroom tomorro what are the best tips?

olivo · 07/09/2008 08:00

yummymummy, i have to say that pull ups have worked for us; dd is just two and has been in pull ups since july; she deos the mojority of her wees and poos on the loo but there is no hassle if she doesn't! she hates the feel of them wet so it has increased her awareness too. she is going into real pants tomorrow and will continue to wear pull ups at night as there is no way she will be dry then.
i also found she prefers to choose whther she uses potty or loo; we have both but she normally chooses the loo. little step is good, but dd cna't still get on the loo with ours, she uses it to wash her hands.
don't forget to dress him in clothes that are easy to get up and down!
good luck!

yummymummy1405 · 07/09/2008 10:18

thank u olivio I have no idea how it is going to go this week he starts pre school on Thursday but they have said that they will do whatever we do at home and I want him to b used to going to the toilet there aswell. It will be an interesting week as dh has a fear of potty training hehehe

Acinonyx · 07/09/2008 19:31

I'm going to try to really crack this PT thing this week with dd. She's 3 (groan) and really happy to wear pants and sit on the potty - but NO idea that it's coming and tons of accidents. Lots of little wees. I despair. I have visions of her going to school in nappies. We're using pull-ups and tomorre - gulp - I want to go to pants all day.

What is the best stuff for getting wee out of your carpet....?

yummymummy1405 · 07/09/2008 21:40

aaarrrggghhh had an afternoon of potty training!!! 8 pairs of pants in under 5 hours is that some kind of record do u think? He did do wee's in the potty but only after doing it in his pants but all credit to the lad once I bribed convinced him to sit on the potty he did do a poo so I was v pleased with that. Never thought I'd get excited over poo! Also any tips of what to do with potty training ds when breastfeeding dd is hungry?

Acinonyx · 07/09/2008 22:08

Well at last attempt we wnet through 8 pants in 2 hours plus 2 wees in the potty. Where does it all come from?

We've only ever had one poo. Dh was witness and called me down to exclaim and admire it. Yup, it's amazing how exciting it can be to see a poo...

Don't know about bf but it is hard to watch over them every minute. You can be sure as soon as I turn away to do anything I will hear 'Oh - oh...'

yummymummy1405 · 09/09/2008 19:26

Ok so we are 2 days intopotty training. He will siton it, wee and poo but he problem is he will only siton it when I prompt it. Although I feel there is progress as today for teh first time he said yes hen I asked if he needed a wee. I dont have to ask his fiddling makes it quite clear

Acinonyx · 09/09/2008 20:59

Well done yummy - we have had 2 days of total nightmare. One very small wee in the potty. Lots of accidents all over the place and much refusal, even with bribes, to go near the potty. But at 3, I really HAVE to try.

It's a nightmare

yummymummy1405 · 09/09/2008 22:45

Thanks for replying acino was begining to think I was all alone in the accident world! Day 3 tomorro and we r venturing out to a friend who's dd is also potty training. I was a weakling today and the pull ups came out at dinner time as I could cope no longer. Still another day awaits...

llynnnn · 10/09/2008 18:21

hope u are all doing well!
well, all day today dd has had diarhoea, i feel so sorry for her as she was doing sooooo well at potty training and telling me whenever she needed to go, but today she has no control again. its awful, she's getting upset and frustrated and still tells me she needs to go but its always too late. i've had her in pull ups as i couldnt keep up.
she is so sore too now, help what can i do??

OP posts:
Acinonyx · 10/09/2008 19:30

Best thing for soreness is freash air and baths. Not sure how you do that with diarhoea - but good luck!
