Why do I find it such an effort to do things with my kids ??

I do very little with them tbh. Can't remember the last time I played a game with them or anything like that and I think that is probably because it normally ends in an argument of some sort.

I did play with them on the trampoline the other day, but have no particular desire to repeat the experience.

I think the main reason I do so little with them is because when I do do things with them they end up misbehaving and making me feel like I wasted my time, but then perhaps that is because I don't spend enough time doing things with them in the first place.

Anyone know what I mean ??

They seem quite happy to amuse themselves 99.9% of the time tbh, but I feel like I should be doing more.

I was a Good Mummy yesterday and sat for a hour detangling Bratz hair, then I had to plait it. There were about 30 of the wretched dolls.

IllegallyBrunette · 05/08/2008 20:03

We do have Monoploy but tbh I kind of lose the will to live half way through as it takes forever to play.

We also have Narnia, Guess Who, Operation, Candyland, Scrabble, Shopping list one, Bratz (absolute shite), and Pop up Pirate which still manages to make me jump and we've had it about 5 years.

Guess Who - DCs can play that over and over and over!

misdee · 05/08/2008 20:08

yes card games work well here.

not sure what its called, but you divide the pack up into however are playing.

you each place a card, if you palce a picture card down, then the next person has to put down x amount of cards, If you play a J, then they put down 1 card, queen is 2, king is 3 and Ace is 4.

however if when they are laying down their cards, they also lay down a picture card, then the next person in play has to dothe same. if they lay down the right amount iof number cards with no pictures, then the person who laid down the picture card wins that lot of cards already down.

the winner is the one with all the cards at the end.

hope i;ve explained that ok

Oh yes we all love UNo, we have UNo extreme which is fab.

Misdee - I might have to read that a few times before i digest it LOL.

Ds has that Tigger one where you put all the stuff on him before he jumps up, which I find rather amusing but it isn't really a family game is it.

I know that game Misdee, used to play it loads as children. It's called Beggar My Neighbour
here

Othersideofthechannel · 05/08/2008 21:55

We used to call it Strip Jack Naked though.

twoluvlykids · 05/08/2008 21:58

try jenga and uno stacko - great when they fall down

Gateau · 06/08/2008 13:32

Don't get this, "I hate them so I won't play them" lark.
Surely there are some things you just have to do sometimes for your kids' sake?

Elkat · 07/08/2008 11:30

Errr, no basically (gateau). There are things I hate doing with my DDs (Mostly baking, gardening etc) but my parents childmind my girls twice a week and I know they do it with them, so I don't need to. On the other hand, I love doing arts and crafts with my girls, but that is something my parents would never do with them. So its a balance, I do the things I enjoy doing and the things I don't they tend to do elsewhere (at my mum's, preschool etc) so there is no need for me to do it. At least this way, I enjoy spending time with my girls and we do something we enjoy together, rather than me getting stressed and shouting at them. Much healthier for all concerned

Elkat · 07/08/2008 11:31

Oh and yes, Sorry is a fab game. My 4 year old loves it, but so do adults too. You can buy old copies off ebay relatively cheaply. Unfortunately its not in the shops anymore.

CountessDracula · 07/08/2008 11:37

Things I LOVE doing with dd (5)

Swingball
Swimming
Dog Walking
Cooking
Singing/dancing
Drawing games (eg I do a squiggle, she turns it into something and vice versa; the one where one person draws a head then folds over, the next a body, the next legs then feet) (we spend hours doing these partic on planes etc)
Reading

I do find most board games dull at this age
She has one called feed the kitty that is akin to pulling nails. And snakes and ladders..
