There seems to be a growing trend in having large families??

when i was growing up nearly everyone had two children. It was the way it was. There seems to be an increase in people having more children again like it was in past generations. Only then they often had no choice i know. What do you think is causing this trend. Is it the celeb baby boom making it fashionble?? Some celebs ie jamie spears and charlotte church are talking of having another straight after giving birth????

Wasabi, I was just about to say that on the whole people have more disposable income now than when I was growing up! Maybe people feel able to 'afford' another child - improved contraception also means gaps between children can be planned a bit better.

I think expectation of what we can and can't afford or expect as basic necesseties has changed enormously.

Mercy · 30/07/2008 13:58

Theinsider, yes most of the mums I know who have twins are 'older'

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 14:08

yes posh does desparately want and girl, thats why Davids having a 'wash n spin' to separate his female sperm for her. Because what posh wants she gets doesnt she...

not sure she wanted a big family though, if she'd had a girl sooner she may have stopped by now.

Does that really happen Loriycs?
Are people really willing to have more kids than they had planned to get the right sex?
I can't get my head round that at all

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 16:45

Yes, one friend of mine always planned on having 3. After the first 3 boys were born she continued to have 2 more cos she wanted a girl so badly. She eventually had one and stopped there. Another younger freind of mine has 5 young boys and is totally exhausted. She's also suffered several miscarraiges over the last 7 years but is planning on continuing to try and have a 'little accident' if need be until she has a girl even though her husband doest want to.

onbly common people have more than 2 due to being unable to contain their breeding habits.

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 16:53

Thats not fair custardo

My mum and dad only had 2. Everyone in our families has only ever had 2.

We broke the chain! We decided from the off we wanted 4, have 3 now, oldest just turned 4, youngest 8mnths.

Not sure if we will go for number 4, I quite like my 2 girls and a boy! (Not sure I could cope with night wakings and things again!)

Everyone around us growing up only had 2, or occasionally 3. Only knew one only child and she is now my SIL!

DanJARMouse · 30/07/2008 16:58

Custardo - thats offensive. Very offensive.

Mercy · 30/07/2008 17:02

erm - Custardo has more than 2 dc!!

2shoes · 30/07/2008 17:03

I think she was most likely winding the op up

DanJARMouse · 30/07/2008 17:04

I hope it was in jest - would have prefered a or at the end to make it clear!

Although, I remember my mum saying once that she found any more than 2 children common - well Ive let her down now, but Im sure she is looking down on me nd has changed her mind.

Tortington · 30/07/2008 17:05

whatever trevor

RuffleTheAnimal · 30/07/2008 17:19

no offense lorycs, but having read half the thread and a fair few posts from you i think everything you say sounds like its just vague ideas and notions and impressions from your own head, rather than anything much to do with reality. its all a bit anecdotal isnt it?

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 17:22

Glad your so intested in me Ruffle I'm Flattered!!

well i did get bored half way through the thread...

Ledodgy · 30/07/2008 18:02

Well I blame the high consumption of wine whilst looking at mn of an evening. that's how my third came about anyway.

theinsider · 30/07/2008 18:04

Ledodgy how did that work? Surely a high consumption of wine one night if internet was down?

Or were you MNing over his shoulder?

Ledodgy · 30/07/2008 18:06

After i'd finished the wine and mn'ed I drunkenly entered the boudoir and the rest as they say is nearly 7 months old.

theinsider · 30/07/2008 18:09

Ahh I see: MN/wine, then an intelligent discussion on the pros and cons of adding to your family, and a well-thought-out and balanced decision made to throw caution to the wind that evening. Got it

Ledodgy · 30/07/2008 18:18

exactly.

Morloth · 30/07/2008 18:30

We are thinking 2 "onlies". It has taken me 4 years to get the point where I might want another one (it comes and goes).

Circumstances mean that it will be a couple more years before we are in a place where we feel comfortable having another and I know that I could not have handled two little ones, am in awe of anyone who can, I just don't have that kind of patience.

I am one of 6 and DH is one of 2 and we are intending 2, so I am not sure what that means theory wise.

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 19:27

says there are 3 pages to this thread? where has the third page gone or is it just my computer??
