5-6 months for both of them
purees & fingerfood

Haylstones · 30/07/2008 12:59

I have a baby and in the past few weeks 3 mums with small babies have told me that they HAD to wean at 12 weeks because their babies were so hungry. Ds was weaned a few weeks early but certainly not as early as 12 weeks despite everyone telling me that he was too big to thrive on just breast milk (ner ner ner from my big off the charts ds)
MJy hv told me that they rarely get a mum/baby who waits till 6 months but it's ok after 4 anyway. I know this is incorrect but wonder if all other mums do.

Victorian squalor - when I said dd was fine I didnt mean fine from any problems I meant she was accepting food whereas ds wasnt interested. I still believe my gp wouldnt advise me to do something if it was dangerous for my baby.

How can he tell though champaganeandroses?

Is he a prophet? The oracle?

There is no way to tell if your child is ready or not.

dd2 25 weeks. Initially tried blw but then went for a more mixed approach which she preferred.

NB between 20-25 weeks we had to increase the number of milk feeds (breast milk at that stage.)

I know that when I had dd1 we started solids at 21 weeks, as she seemed more hungry. I wish we had waited with dd1 til 25 weeks. (no BIG reason, just in retrospect we didn't need to start then)

onepieceoflollipop · 30/07/2008 13:07

smallwhitecat this is what we did. dd2 couldn't sit "properly" til nearer 8 months, but we propped her up in the highchair - at 25 weeks. I don't think she could have waited another 2 months for solids, that is just my opinion btw, am not an expert!

ds 1 - 6 months on purees

ds2 - started at 6 months then stopped due to eczema outbreaks. just starting again now at 9.5 months. no eczema outbreaks so far so i am convinced that waiting longer has helped. my head tells me to do BLW but the gagging thing freaks me out so much so we are on purees at the moment

ruddynorah · 30/07/2008 13:11

champagne- a lot of people think like that of their gp, forgetting that they are trained to deal with sick people, not normal babies..unless that is their field of specialism. few gps would, for example, be able to give any useful advice on breastfeeding, as it isn't an illness. same goes for weaning.

champagneandroses · 30/07/2008 13:19

there is a local weaning group, I think I'll go and see them next week. The thing is ive started now so even if I wanted to I cant reverse it. I listened to my GP knowing that he has two litle ones younger than my dd (3.9yrs) so they must have been born after the guidelines changed, I suppose him telling me its ok doesnt mean he practised what he preaches.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 30/07/2008 13:26

(be wary - my 'weaning group' was even less use than your HV & GP have been so far - spouted lots of myths and were very down on bfing)

reban · 30/07/2008 13:28

all three between 16-18 weeks even though guidelines changed between oldest and youngest two. This was not conscious rebellion, my HV didnt even mention the change in guideline to me. Also they were all starving and very ready for food which is why i started them at this point.
However now im expecting no 4 and i know about the new guidlines i exoect i will be more cautious this time.
By the way i know i may be being dumb but what does BLW stabd for?

VictorianSqualor · 30/07/2008 13:29

You can stop now if need be.
Before anyone jumps down my neck I'm not saying it is poison, but if you see it in the same way, giving a little bit of poison wouldn't kill anything, but large doses would, the possible damage done by early weaning will be less substantial if less was done iyswim.

VictorianSqualor · 30/07/2008 13:30

baby led weaning

ruddynorah · 30/07/2008 13:30

baby led weaning. no spoons cos they can feed themselves from 6 months. you wait to wean until they can feed themselves, hence 'baby led'.

thebecster · 30/07/2008 13:31

6 months, finger food - started with steamed carrot batons & frozen banana cut into sticks (he was teething at the time).

I have coeliac (was formula fed and weaned early by today's standards) so I was particularly careful to follow the recommendations, and also didn't give him gluten until he was 12 months.

BuwchBywiog · 30/07/2008 13:34

I weaned my DS at 16 weeks after being advised to do so by his cardiologist my HV wasn't keen but it did him the world of good I know some people would shoot me but its what he needed at the time.

DD is now 22 weeks and not showing much interest as yet so am hoping she will wait until 26 weeks. She has no teeth yet so am wary of giving finger foods but I guess a lot can change in 4 weeks so we shall see how things progress.

ruddynorah · 30/07/2008 13:36

they don't need teeth for finger foods. they have hard gums.

nappyaddict · 30/07/2008 13:36

9 months - blw.

becklespeckle · 30/07/2008 13:36

DD had tiny amounts of puree from 22 weeks and from 6 months she has been having almost-pureed meals and finger foods. Crumpets and cheese are particular faves!

champagneandroses · 30/07/2008 13:38

who else thinks its not too late to stop, hes had 3 complete jars up to now.

I feel a bit let down now by the advice I was given, the breastfeeding advice I got was awful no support at all when I was struggling with the latch and in a lot of pain I was told it was all normal! also was told in the hospital to feed him a bottle of formula because of his blood sugar levels (had gestational diabetes) I didnt I breastfed him every hour and got his blood sugar to normal within 8 hours.

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 30/07/2008 13:39

not too late to stop at all.

ruddynorah · 30/07/2008 13:39

how old is he? 3 jars in total in his life? if so then yes just stop.
