I have a 2YO DS and regularly walk at least 2 miles a day so I think I still need a pushchair for him but apparently MIL thinks he's bog enough to walk it!!! Am I wrong in thinking he shouldnt walk this far?

Also I'm on my 3rd pushchair since he was born have had Emmaljunga Cerox, which loved but too big for it now, Jane energy(just shite), and now using M&P 03 sport which is 3 months old but very big and heavy! Want to sell all and buy a Baby Jogger Mini city as is tiny, easy to fold and lightweight. Does anyone have experience with one of these?

Am I being pram obsessed or am I justified?

Oh Goodness, I have had three babies so far and have had more prams than Mothercare, tried most of them at least once.
You do need a pram for at 4 years I would say, heck my 6 year old would hop in too given the chance some days after school.

youngbutnotdumb · 19/07/2008 13:27

Sophie- NOOOOOOOOOOOOO at the Bugaboo LOL

Nasty things that they are I dont know there is something I hate about them!

DS has just turned 2 so am thinking of going on a four day trip to Grannys and seeing how he copes without his pram. Dreading it but will try.

Has he got a scooter? Or maybe you live in an area where they are unsuitable.

My dd had a mini micro scooter for her 2nd birthday. It is very sturdy and didn't take her long to get used to. She now uses it for daily walk to take ds to school and back. Not sure how far but it takes about 20mins.

At the beginning, it was hung on the back of the buggy for part of the journey. Now she is older (3.4yrs), I'm toying with the idea of getting a balance bike.

Trip without the buggy sounds a good idea. If you haven't got it he can't go in it!

I never had a pram or a pushchair for dd.

coolkat · 19/07/2008 14:06

I had several for DD and that included the mamas and papas 03 sport, I have to say that yes it is big and bulky but really easy to push, has loads of room in for little one, you would loose a lot of money if you got rid of it and if you walk a lot I would def keep it and perhaps buy a cheap buggy for in the car and around the shops.
I have learnt this time "hopefully", baby due in Nov and bought three wheeler first time as although they are big they are easier for me to push and are more roomy. Having said that got maclaren XT in garage that friend gave me for the car.

Sorry for ramble.

Hello youngbutnotdumb - what have you got against the Bugaboo - yes I know they are annoyingly everywhere and an annoyingly smug status symbol to some but OMG they are practical and well made!!!

youngbutnotdumb · 19/07/2008 16:28

Sophie- It's not that I have anything against them, I've just never liked them and far too expensive considering it'd only be used a few times. Afriend at DS's nursery has one if them and we walk home together don't know how many times she's got stuck!!! Thanks though

Coolkat- I hgave decided to keep a hold of my TANK as I had an Emmaljunga Cerox before so is actually smaller lol. But I don't have a car and need to go on trains, buses and taxis when am visiting MIL as all of my family live in the same area which is why I'm looking for something smaller just for down there really. Couldn't care less about shops if people don't like it then they should get out of my way. LOL.

I have a BabyJogger City for DS2 (20mo, can't walk) and a buggy board for DS1 (3.11)

coolkat · 19/07/2008 19:46

Glad your keeping it, I have gone for the three wheel Britax this time as you can have a carrycot but am sure it won't last as long as your mamas and papas one as the seat was so spacious.

If I am ever up north and get shunted by M+P three wheeler I will know its you!

youngbutnotdumb · 19/07/2008 20:19

Yes probably it's not intentional though (well unless it's some little chav who just won't move) it's the huge footplate thingy it's hard to jusdge how far you are from anything.

youngbutnotdumb - sorry as I haven't read all of this thread, but just wanted to say my baby jogger mini is a lifesaver!

I started with a graco mosaic whcih was ok in travel system mode but too bulky for the car and just too much trouble. I got the baby jogger when DS was about 3m and it is wonderful! I use it every day and walk further now just because it is a joy to push.Always feels really light and rolls well over pavements and parks. It turns on a sixpence and is much easier to move around shops etc. It fully reclines so DS often naps in it and it folds in an unusual way so fits in my little car with room to spare. I love it.
Look at their website for how it folds if you are still interested. I got mine new on ebay for £100 including postage.

ummadam · 20/07/2008 11:53

oh, and it steers lovely with one hand

sophiebbb · 20/07/2008 22:12

Hello again youngbutnotdumb - maybe I am being stupid (it is a Sunday night after all and I am cream crackered!!!) but don't understand when you say that 'far too expensive considering it'd only be used a few times'.

I use my bugaboo most days and will do for the next 3-4 years. In fact it is the nearest thing I will come to a fashion accessory for the next few years!! If I average out the amount it cost divided by the amount I will use it and the pleasure I get from it then the price is not bad.

youngbutnotdumb · 20/07/2008 22:26

sophie- U've confused me.

My DS is 2YO and is only going to be used maybe 3/4 times in the next year or so as it'll only be for visiting MIL in Glasgow and even then it doesn't get used all the time down there maybe 3 days or so every 4 months. Hardly worth hundreds.

Blimey, DD is only 6 months and I already own;

iCandy Apple
Maclaren Techno
M&P Luna

I was given the Luna by my SIL - it's the original one and she's replacing it with the new Luna for her impending DC3 because it's now a travel system whereas the old one wasn't.

Her DD2 loves the Luna. She's 2.8 and is really happy in it. SIL loves it also and has had no issues with it at all. It has a lovely big shopping basket, easy to steer one handed and folds nice and small.

youngbutnotdumb · 20/07/2008 22:40

Eyeballsinthesky- Does the seat sit up properly on the Luna? I've heard that toddlers don't look to comfy in it and my DS is quite big is there plenty of room? Thanks x

I've had 2 prams and one pushchair for DS, but I've only spent money on one - the pushchair, which is a Maclaren, bought when he was 3 months, used from about 4 months but I also carried on using the pram which was part of a travel system. My mum got two travel systems off Freecycle. I think a lot of people end up spending a fortune on a travel system which they'll only use over the first few months, and then find it's too cumbersome later.

Our Maclaren seems roomy enough to me - DS is only 14 months but everyone's surprised by that because he's big for his age - tall and broad.

You could try joining your local freecycle and looking out for offers of the more lightweight buggies to try out.

DS is just starting to walk but I'm sure at two he will do a lot more, however, I imagine we'll still need a buggy for longer journeys by public transport and foot, and also if we're going to be out for a long period of time - 2 year olds still need to be able to rest or even have daytime naps, and we currently use the buggy lots to get him off to sleep.

EyeballsintheSky · 20/07/2008 23:15

She's been using it for about a year. They got it to take to New York and she slept in it during the day when out and about.

The seat seems plenty straight enough. Granted it looks a bit odd because the child looks like she's perched on the edge a bit but she's always been very happy in it and she's dead awkward so I would expect her to object if she didn't like it. She doesn't look near to outgrowing it yet.

What I like about it is that the Maclaren design keeps the child a bit hidden because of the deep sides. The Luna doesn't have those when the seat is straight so the little 'un can see what's going on a bit more. Think that's what makes it look odd. I won't use it for DD yet as it does strike me as an older child's buggy.

Sorry, waffled a bit there!

MsHighwater · 20/07/2008 23:37

We've only ever owned one pram/pushchair for DD (just turned 3). Mothercare Urban Detour travel system, still use it cos I try to avoid using the car for local trips but DD can't reliably walk the mile to the main street and back (and what would I carry my shopping in, anyway?). Also have use of a McLaren Quest when at my parents' - they bought it for the use of all 3 gc's (inc my neice and nephew) when visiting. We borrow it for holidays cos it's smaller and lighter than the UD. I expect we'll she'll walk more and more in the next few months.

I would have loved to have the Quinny Zapp (or was it the Buzz - the one that folds down to virtually nothing and goes in its own bag) and would probably have bought it if we didn't have the McLaren available - as it is I'm too tight to part with the cash!

Other than that it never occurred to me to buy another pram when I have one that works and only one dc.

sophiebbb · 20/07/2008 23:58

youngbutnotdumb - told you I was tired!!! You are right - not worth hundreds of pounds for the usage you describe

youngbutnotdumb · 21/07/2008 00:01

LOL sophie u had me confused. Thanks for the suggestion though
