Apparently rubbing in olive oil and leaving it overnight/for a few hours, will help lift those lovely scales off (that's the olive oil from the chemist, not the cooking variety).

SPARKLER1 · 02/02/2005 14:35

I remember health visitor telling me to use Olive oil.

lucy5 · 02/02/2005 14:55

i used olive oil, not from the chemist though. Ooops

I used normal virgin olive oil too.

Aveeno cream is great, good for eczema but I found it got rid of dd's unshiftable cradle cap

NotQuiteCockney · 02/02/2005 15:09

My DS2 (4.5 months) used to have pretty bad cradle cap. But he hated being bathed (might be getting better now), so I couldn't really bring myself to oil him.

So I looked into it, and found out that keeping the head too warm is part of the problem! So I stopped putting fitted hats on him, and only used hoods. He's a generally very very warm baby (happily nude in rooms I think are too cold to be nude in), so that made this easier. And as a result his cradle cap is pretty much entirely gone!

dentinox cradle cap shampoo is good

Millie1 · 02/02/2005 19:39

Second the Olive Oil vote but, here's a good tip I got recently, use a nit comb (plastic) to gently lift the cradle cap off once the oil has softened it overnight. Worked a treat for us.

moondog · 02/02/2005 19:42

The olive oil from the chemist (do they STILL do that? Thought my grandmother's bottle circa 1971 was the last on the planet!) is no different to that from anywhere else!

SeaShells · 02/02/2005 19:49

We used Baby oil on DD and it cleared up completely.

WestCountryLass · 02/02/2005 21:47

Don't use olive oil! I used it on my DD and it turned her cradle cap yellow and she looked like a boiled egg!!!!

Dentinox shampoo and Boots cradle cap cream

mears · 02/02/2005 21:50

Baby oil works if you leave it on overnight. Avoid using any shampoo products - just plain water is enough for babies hair - shampoos/soap can cause the problem.

misdee · 02/02/2005 21:53

oil, or basic moisteriser left over night, then gently brush/comb the scales. shampoo when hair is dry to getrid of the greasiness, then rinse.

isnt cradle cap a form of sebrohhic (sp??) eczema?

vess · 12/02/2005 18:52

Dentinox shampoo and the creme from Boots worked for us as well - it was gone in a few days. I know they say it isn't harmful and doesn't bother the baby so you can leave it, but personally I couldn't stand the thought of my baby having this on his head, so I had to try and get rid of it!

Grommit · 12/02/2005 18:56

detinox shampoo works but you need to use a fine comb to remove the scabs/flakes

HunkerMunker · 12/02/2005 18:59

We used Dentinox too - makes their hair smell of roses DS's was gone inside a week and it was everywhere!

jabberwocky · 12/02/2005 19:22

We used Burt's Bees Baby Oil (apricot oil I think) and it worked beautifully.

Surfermum · 12/02/2005 20:07

I used olive oil overnight then combed her hair the next morning with a nit comb. It worked a treat. I also used Dentinox to wash it.

Tissy · 12/02/2005 20:11

I second the nit comb- dd is so used to it, that combing her when she had nits was a doddle!

soapbox · 12/02/2005 20:15

I know that this sounds really weird - but I promise you it really does work 1st time and very effectively!

Make a watery paste with bicab of soda and water and spread it on top of the cradle cap. leave on for a couple of minutes and then rinse off. Repeat a couple more times until the cradle cap has all disolved.

Wash hair and rinse with water which has a couple of drops of tea tree oil in it.

If you add tea tree oil to the final rinse each time you wash their hair it stops it coming back.

grapeseed oil. My midwife was amazed and now recommends it to all.

stitch · 13/02/2005 19:52

olive oil, followed by nit comb. worked for my kids, and my sister, (twenty years ago!)

LapsedGymJunkie · 13/02/2005 20:04

I must be the only one that left it to its own devices, it went eventually.

MarmaladeSun · 15/02/2005 16:13

Just a word of warning about Dentinox. I used it on DD for her cradle cap, and when I rinsed it off her scalp was an angry red, looked like it had been burnt, and the nurse said it was probably the shampoo was too harsh for her skin. Took days to go, the scales were still there and I felt awful. I poured the bottle down the sink and just brush her head when it's wet. The scales are nearly gone now.
