So if you lot all hate school events, who are all the parents who keep coming into the school office saying:

'Can we come & watch the cycling proficiency test' Er - no, you might put the little darlings off.

'Why aren't parents invited to the swimming gala?' - Because there is a space of about six feet between the edge of the pool and the 8 foot high wall.

'Don't you have a parents' evening this term?' - no, just read his report, you can commenmt on the slip that you never bother to send back to say you've had it....

Why do they do everything in the last month of term. So far we have had bring a bear day, school fair, kids bingo, sports day, school trips for every year, school photos, school video - it all costs money why the hell cant they spread it out?

Glad I dont still have 1 at playgroup because then I had separate sports days and fairs there too.

I do appreciate it is parents who volunteer to arrange a lot of this stuff but just dont understand why some of it couldnt have happend last term. We are kind of financially average I really hate to think how people on a tighter budget manage.

Because if they did it before, parents would complain that they weren't doing any work - they are only allowed to have fun after summer half term....

WilyWombat · 08/07/2008 18:13

Well as a result of the parents that complain about children having fun through the rest of the year a charity didnt get a donation from me...I generally do everything but had a turn when a sponsorship form turned up after everything else and just said NO...not this time. Specially as they only gave us 3 days between giving us the form, getting the money in and gave me a form for both children! fgs do I have nothing else to do?

Cammelia · 08/07/2008 18:17

I go to everything that dd is in and everything else that she wants to attend eg. school fete etc.

However I can't/won't go to outside sports matches which are 1-2 hours drive away at strange schools in the middle of nowhere, especially in winter.

I do go to her swimming galas though.

Kbear · 08/07/2008 18:18

and it's book week and they want everyone in the school hall after school buying books - I LOVE books but they're so expensive and the library bus stops outside our house so no shortage of reading material!!

The school trip tomorrow is costing £16.50 (to a castle) - fuel costs apparently have bumped up the price. I make sure we can afford it but there were a few sharp intakes of breath at the cost this time.

So not only time is precious this month but the old purse strings take a battering too!!

Roll on summer holidays!

RustyBear · 08/07/2008 18:22

A 54 seater coach round here costs about £700 for a day trip to London (we're in Berks)
Allowing for the adults who have to go, that's over £14 per child just for the coach (& that was booked before the latest petrol price rises)

spudmasher · 08/07/2008 18:30

Oh it is way too busy.....
I have to run the bloody hook a duck stall then go to my own dds summer fayre.
I have to do the end of term play then go and watch one.
We have a parents evening tomorrow to give out non existent SATs results.
Trying to keep a class of hormonal Year Six calm enough to function safely.
And then today we are told to keep it all going because OFSTED might come next week!!! WTF!!!! Poor kids. Poor me.
My own kids are on their knees with tiredness.
I've had it.

"The children do love to dress up in their team's colours. Your child is a Yellow Star."

BUT SHE DOESN'T HAVE ANY YELLOW CLOTHES. Am I seriously expected to go shopping just for one hour's infant races?

I know she could borrow something.... just being a grump.

Here: sports day, summer fair, end of term service. So not too bad really, but the in-laws are coming to stay next week, I'm in the throes of applying for a new job, DD1 will be six next week, DD2 will be three two weeks later and suddenly there's a major project on at work that has to be done this week.

Aero · 08/07/2008 18:47

Oh, I knew there was another thing. The hassle of organising something to dress up in for the last day of book week last Friday! All this and my parents were here for the weekend. It's enough to send me running for the hills!!

WideWebWitch · 08/07/2008 18:48

Yes, I missed ds's sports day (he didn't care)
Dh went to dd's sports day (she did)
I went to ds's parents evening today
Ds has trousers for being a wizard but I have no idea when the show is and doubt v much I'll be able to make it
I worked from home to take dd to her induction day
and todayt as dh needed to go on a course
we have been juggling a go go

it's like it all the time tbh not just end of term, have only read op though, will read thread now.

Aero · 08/07/2008 18:48

Also forgot about the recent sponsored basketball thing! It just gets worse.

WideWebWitch · 08/07/2008 18:52

And I don't do fayres or fairs or stalls so our hassly existence is without any PTA involvement etc.

jammi - i do enjoy events at the school, music evenings, fetes, sports days, I honestly like getting involved and supporting my children but in July, as in December, there seems to be heaps of stuff to do (in the middle of the day like 1.45pm sports day) which is a logistical nightmare if you work outside the home, especially with a commute, where you would rather save your holiday days for your family holiday. Already I'm thinking how many days I will need for events at Christmas and my kids are at two separate schools.

I would be at everything, I really would, and between me, DH and my mum and dad we juggle it so someone is always there. I am a control freak and I always want to be there too!
