Yes - we are being stretched to breaking point. The last 2 weeks are nearly something every day.

DH and I have done what we can but other things only our nanny will be going to. Now frankly (i) all the DCs want is someone to witness their performance; (ii)they love their nanny and she is the one who has done a fair chunk of helping learn lines/practice ballet etc so she is keen to see things as well; (iii)they have to learn that actually Mum and Dad can't drop everything all the time (I particularly like the things that cut through really odd hours of the day - no I can't make a picnic from 11am-1pm).

But I do feel - or maybe just imagine - the whispered comments of "of course, the parents couldn't be bothered and only sent the nanny - those poor children".

Aaaargh!

scattyspice · 08/07/2008 12:54

I agree.

We have school play no siblings allowed (so DH has to leave work to have DD so I can go and see DS be a jellyfish!)
And sports day which might be Mon or Tues if raining on Mon or even Wed! How am i supposed to arrange that with work?

I had stupid last two weeks (school now finished).

DD away on school residential; DH away for work. Me out on the town taking advantage of not requiring babysitter. Out Mon-Thursday.

DD and DH back Friday. Me out Sat to leavers' ball (as staff). Sunday off.

Monday - Y7 induction evening for DD
Tuesday - NCT class bbq (my other hat on) - had to miss this
Wed - 2pm - Speech Day (DD); 7pm - NCT class observation
Thurs - Fundraising Party (real life social event, not work or parent related)
Fri - 4pm DD Y6 leaving party; 5.30pm boarding house leavers' meal; 7.30pm 6th form leavers' talent showcase
Sat - Monrning: Speech Day (as staff) followed by 6th form leavers' lunch with parents; 7pm staff leavers' party

Plus working 8.30 or 9 til 6pm everyday Mon-Fri; new job in morning, current job in afternoons.

I am no longer 18yo and cannot work all day and party all night for weeks on end!

Last week I went to one assembly and one parents evening

In the next 2 weeks I'm meant to be going to

Parents evening
Sports day (x2)
End of term concert (x2
School trip (x2 and both on the same day)

(plus dh has about 3 evening meetings and 2 medical appts)

I'm sure it wasn't like this last year (even though ds wasn't at school)

Anchovy · 08/07/2008 13:06

(To be honest, my nanny is a lot more involved and relevant than either of the DCs aunts!)

It's not just posh schools. I have had or will have in the last and coming week:

work days: 2 sports days, 2 class assemblies, 1 music concert.

Evenings and weekends: 3 parents evenings (ok one of those was du to me signing up stupidly for separate days) one school fete, one school maypole trip, one preschool meeting.

Plus a sick child to take time off work for.

Really, I nearly cried with relief this morning when one sports day was postponed and I could actually go to work for a change.

Totally agree - my calendar has no space left. Even the evenings are full - parents meeting at new secondary school, PTA night out, mums night out, leavers party for Year 6, Year 6 play. Arrggghhh.

Ant to make it even better, dd's dance school is doiung an end of year show so that means numerous extra classes, rehearsals and then the FOUR performances!

HuwEdwards · 08/07/2008 17:11

we aren't invited to any school assemblies, end of term 'dos' or sports daya.

I heart our school

BoysAreLikeDogs · 08/07/2008 17:14

yy had to go to school show last night, to watch DS1 being a tree don't ask.

Sports day twice, one junior, one infant

School Fayre last Friday

Parents' evening Thursday night

Now DS2 has come home with an invite to a Premiere of his Class Film - WTF - tomorrow at 3pm

I agree that it is ridiculous, and I don't even work at the mo.

I do try to be helpful though to mums that can't make it, and so ended up with my 3, plus 2 more at the carnival last week. Took them home for tea with mine and neither even mentioned the fact that their mums weren't there.

I am dreading the time when I have to say that I can't go to something.

Luckily my mum always tries to step in though.

IllegallyBrunette · 08/07/2008 17:16

Actually I dread having to let xp go instead of me.

Mercy · 08/07/2008 17:16

I missed the posh schools bit.

Don't be daft tmmj - my dc school is an underachieving/low inner city one! WHich is probably why these events are important.

whatismyname · 08/07/2008 17:20

This amkes me feel better I am hoping it will rain on DD sports day as we have a class with a concert for DS

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2008 17:21

I feel like I'm slightly losing the plot today with all thats going on. Started gibbering at the after school 'prepare for the carnival club' this afternoon that I had to be back in not much more than an hour after having persuaded dd to get changed after her judo club so that she could partake in the summer concert.

One of the Mums looked at me with a 'well whats the problem? look' at which point I felt like the inadequate one for starting to lose my marbles. And i've only got the one dd.

see, even here I'm becoming a gibbering loon.

Got home, dd is eating, tells me that shes left her recorder and her music somewhere at school. Told her if she can't find it when she gets there then she can't play.

Right onwards..... (into insanity and beyond)

It's madness indeed. So far we've done the school fayre (two hours manning frog hoopla stall in blazing sunshine and relief for the second hour never turned up),

meeting with ds2's new teacher ahead of him starting school in September,

ds2's introduction to school afternoon last Wednesday and again tomorrow,

music concert for dd,

meeting regarding residential trip for ds1 next term,

sports day is on Thursday

Next week a meeting with SENCo re dd's progress this year,

Ds1 is in end of year production, date tbc.

I'm fairly sure there's something I've forgotten. I can't keep up to it all.

Ah, I couldn't agree more. Last week was a logistical nightmare for me (supported by FANTASTIC boss who said "do what you need to do"!) so I worked a few extra hours to gain some time off. Left work early three days running, the wednesday was sports day (or fun and fitness because they're not allowed to compete FFS) so I left work at 12.30, ran for train, leapt on in nick of time, got off, ran to the car in car park, got to the school gate only to read the sign "cancelled due to weather forecast". So I stood there sweating, got my sunglasses out so I could see properly as it was so bright and thought WTF, not a whiff of a raincloud and they fucking cancelled it IN CASE IT RAINED. f u m e

Then I ranted for about an hour at home then at pick up time all the other mums that had also re-jigged their working week all ranted together!

IllegallyBrunette · 08/07/2008 17:48

The thing that is garunteed to drive me absolutly bonkers at this time of year, is when you know that your child/ren are going to need a costume of some sort for something, and yet despite the school giving you the date of said production months ago, they can't seem to tell you what they will need until 2 days before, when they come home with note asking them to take in red curtain/sheet/duvet for tommorow.

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/07/2008 17:51

Thank goodness none of this nonsense goes on in secondary school!

My parents were both teachers so never came to anything at my school as they couldn't get the time off. Don't think it's traumatised me.
