Kids and alcohol, a little confused, what is your stance? French mums view points would be welcome.

Just picked up the free ELC free mag and am a little shocked.

There is an article in there about talking to children about alcohol that says we should be giving the message that "Children don't drink alcohol" that "some adults drink alcohol, but children never should, there should be no compromise". It says the Health Visitors Association says we shouldn't be saying "Don't do as I do" It gives an example of a mum who only drinks when her children are in bed and if they see her drinking at a wedding she explains it's OK for adults to have a little alcohol on special occasions. It was presented in a way that inferred we should all be going with this approach.

Am I the only one who thinks this a little ermmmm Victorian, completely the wrong way to teach children how to respect alcohol oh and the Nanny State gone mad!!!!!!

I was brought up with wine often present at meals and we were encouraged to try it too. We travelled to France a lot and remember French children had a similar upbringing re wine. When I stayed with my French pen friend we usually were given watered down wine. Now I have children nearly 4 and 5, we often drink wine at meals and I let my dd who is interested dip her finger in to taste it and Baileys at Xmas etc. So am I completely wrong to be doing this??? Do other people?????

Am I right in thinking there isn't a drink problem in France with teenagers many of which would have had a similar upbringing as myself with alcohol ie one that fosters a healthy respect in an open environment. Surely hiding it away makes it glamourous and just something teenagers will be dying to get their hands on.

I'm happy to be corrected here as away my dc are very young so not encountered many teenagers since I was one

ah yes, alcopops. I think they are a huge problem and unsuitable for our piss-head culture.

I wouldn't give them to teenagers at all.

In a bar or restaurant and by that I mean any area in a public house etc set out as an eating area it is legal to give a child over 5 beer, wine, cidar, pierre or port as long as they are eating a meal.

littleboyblue do you mean in France? In Scotland it's 16 with a meal. I'm sure it used to be 14 but I checked recently and definitely 16 now.

I thought it was illegal to ' ply a child under 2 with alcohol'. I'm sure it used to be anyway as my best friend is a copper(retired)and we used to joke about it.
My Ds used to have a tiny sip/finger dip when he was small(up to about 3 years old)but he didn't bother after that and now he's nearly 10 has no inclination to taste it at all...I'm hoping Dd feels the same. I personally feel that if they are aware of the tastes/flavours etc, that they wont be so curious at 10, 12 years old etc...well that's the plan!
My nephew/nieces were not allowed to taste and they all crept downstairs and helped themselves one morning...3 totally drunk kids! I'll stick with my way I think.

I mean in uk, and as per the most recently published book I have on licensing laws, it states it's 5.
I think you'd be hard pushed to find a landlord that would allow it though.
And icod, you are a magistrate but state on your profile that you do sod all? Are you like me and am on a temp break from work to be with your kids or are you just on the wind-up?

There was a recnt wine festival here. For around nine £ you had a book og vouchers which entitled uyou to ten (I think!) glasses of wine. Many people picnicked and brought or bought a bottle a bottle or two to go with th food. It was open from ten am to midnight with shows, music, a huge light show and fireworks at midnight. There were over half a million visitors over three day weekend.

45,000 bottles of wine were finished - not including those brought to picnic with.

I read in the paper the following day that there was not a single serious incident during the festival.

Many people came as family. We picnicked two nights running with friends and various offspring. None of the children were given wine.

I cannot imagine taking the kids to a wine festival - or anywhere with soi much alcohol/crowds in the uk.

We left both nights well after midnihgt. There was lots of bonhomie but I did not see a single pissed person.

Didn't we just do this?

On the last thread I thought we all had "anecdotal evidence" showing that it didn't really matter what you did within reason?

Someone less lazy then me able to post a link?
