I do iron on, and I use fabric pens on the labels in the clothes.

In short, label everything.

LucyJones · 30/06/2008 19:23

where do you get fabric pens from?
can you just write in biro on the label?

cash's name tapes sewn on. PE kit a must, plus school jumper. they always take them off and leave them around the building.

LIZS · 30/06/2008 19:28

Label anything you want to see home again or cannot afford to lose. Sew ins last longest (3 eyasr and counting)

NoNickname · 30/06/2008 19:29

Name everything!

I can really recommend the Fabrimarker!

OverMyDeadBody · 30/06/2008 19:30

Label anything that they take into school, even stuff for show and tell.

Sewn on nametapes for clothes, permanent marker on all lunchboxes and tupperware and shoes.

Twelvelegs · 30/06/2008 19:32

Label everything, I have stitch on which are great. The idea was to reuse them and save money, that was the idea[blush}.

NoNickname · 30/06/2008 19:32

Iron ons are good for socks.

Olihan · 30/06/2008 19:33

Label everything that you don't want to lose...... Even vests and socks as kids often don't remember if they were wearing a vest when getting changed after PE and one pair of grey socks looks very like another!

Biro is hopeless, comes off after 2 washes.

A decent laundry pen is pretty good for clothes labels but sewn in labels are by far the best way as they stay put, the iron on ones tend to work loose after lots of washing.

Stick on labels (use the Easy2Name link on here) are fab for lunch boxes, drinks bottles.

lady does amazing personalised PE bags for £5.60, inc postage and has about 80 fabrics to choose from.

pointydog · 30/06/2008 19:35

I bought a fabrimarker for each of the dds when they were tiny, at nursery. I still use them today and dds are 11 and9. Very easy, super quick. I recommend.

Label anything they might take off en masse eg sweatshirt, polo shirt, skirt/trousers. Gym Kit. Label lunch bag if you don't think it's very distinctive.

pointydog · 30/06/2008 19:36

You can use fabrimarkers on lunch boxes, bags, cagouls for camp, underwear for camp, the lot.

bish bash bosh

peanutbutterkid · 30/06/2008 19:36

I write name in Biro on labels, but check for legibility everytime I pull an item out of cupboard or hang it up after a wash. If that's too much hassle, you must sew on (or maybe iron on).

School recommends sew on labels (and ONLY sew on labels). I do sew on labels for tights, gloves, hats. I use silver marker pen for black shoes. Black marker pen for lunchboxes (but usually, they don't get duplicate lunch boxes within the same class, and they don't mix up with other classes, so much less important). I draw the line at socks, I do not sew in socks labels!!

I make out big time (saving oodles of money) every 6 months or so when the unclaimed lost property gets sold off for 1 quid/item.

elfsmummy · 30/06/2008 19:37

Sew on. If you have a machine do it with that. Its so much quicker. And it'll stay put forever. Get out everything that needs labelling and do it in one go. Takes 2 hours max.

You could order tapes with (twin1 name) surname (twin 2 name) then just turn over the wrong name.

peanutbutterkid · 30/06/2008 19:38

Oh, and I write our surname in big letters in black marker on the outside of the collar of white PE shirts. Even with the name clearly labeled inside, it may not come home with child, but nobody is going to keep by mistake a white t-shirt with somebody else's surname on it.

pointydog · 30/06/2008 19:38

Or use a fabrimarker and take 15 mins

NigellaTheOriginal · 30/06/2008 19:44

When they started school I labelled everything, even socks, with sew on tapes.
Now 8 years in I onlydo sweashirts.

magicfarawaytree · 30/06/2008 19:48

agree lable everything you dont want to lose. I had iron on tape which was good but then I found a sew in one where I could have two lines of info so I have name on one line and mobile no and home no on the other line. it is no wider than standard tape.

iheartdusty · 30/06/2008 19:49

in our house it went like this:

PFB starts school;
Stick-ons in shoes, lunch box, hat, etc, iron-ons on all clothes. Irons-ons all come off after 1 or 2 washes, I order piles of sew-ons.

PFB moves into Yr 1 and NSC lines up for nursery. I order sew-ons for other child.

One year later - I look at faded Biro scrawl on clothing wash labels and suddenly remember the sew-on labels sitting in their envelope.

I have no idea whether the cardigans/ sweatshirts we finished the year with are the same ones we started with. At least there seem to be enough of the right colour.

MilaMae · 30/06/2008 20:58

Thanks for that, that has given me some idea of the massieeeeve job mum has ahead of her !!!!!!

I don't sew, as mum has offered to do it I'll go for the sew ons this year am suspecting she won't be offering next year so I'll switch to the pen then ,gradually ending up like Iheartdusty

Thanks again

I've just ordered name tapes for DS starting school and only put our surname on as I want to use stuff for DS2 as well.

ReallyTired · 30/06/2008 22:28

Its not that hard to sew on labels. Its hardly embroidary. I think you are being a bit lazy getting your mum to do it all.

This website do some nice cheap labels.

www.wovenlabelsuk.com/website/catalog/category.asp?cid=31

I am a snob and I hate laudary pen. It looks really messy and iron labels come off.

ingles2 · 30/06/2008 22:33

have tried iron on, stick on, pens but have resorted to sew on cash labels now....my boys school stuff gets washed a lot and nothing else lasts...
I label, pe kit, sweatshirts, coats, ties.
