Although just to add we are on the later side of 3. We only just moved it back a couple of months ago because he was taking too long to fall asleep and it was causing him to mess about

Allonthesametrain · 05/07/2026 19:40

7pm with wind down time in bed bit always in bedroom for then.

MsSquiz · 05/07/2026 19:40

Both DDs were down by 7pm at age 3 and would be up around 6am

ThisVividMoose · 05/07/2026 19:42

All depends what time you want/need the child to bed awake in the morning and how much sleep they as an individual needs. One of mine needed 12 hours sleep and needed to be up at 7am so 7pm bed worked for him. My other child has always needed less sleep so I was willing to let her stay up about half an hour extra and read a bit because I did not want her up too early in the morning waking her brother.

And how do people get toddlers to sleep for 7 when they finish nursery at 5.30pm. By the time we get home it’s 6.30 and then dinner, bath, books. Ends up being so late 🤦‍♀️

do they need a full cooked dinner? mine have a tea at nursery around 3:30. We do get home by 545 but still often end up giving her substantial snacks rather than a cooked meal. but we are also able to divide and conquer, one stays at home and cooks and one does nursery run (both WFH). They probably don't need a bath every night either if that's time consuming.

Corusa · 05/07/2026 19:50

9pm. Up at 7am. Still has an afternoon nap.

I have no idea! Mine were in a school nursery with wrap around at age 3 so definitely needed a proper dinner and couldn’t rely on nursery tea. Bed I would have liked to have been 7.30 but realistically was often more like 8. They were fine though! Up about 6.30/7 and seemed to get enough sleep.

ThisVividMoose · 05/07/2026 19:54

It is a reality that if parents work commitments mean a child has to be at nursery until 5.30pm then there is not much family time at the end or probably start of the day either. It is one reason why I am so grateful that I had family and a childminder to care for my two. Our family actually cared for the children at our home too so ofter mil would do the kids meal, and my husband and I could spend decent chunk of time with the children at bedtime every night. As they got older we did put bedtime back so we could all eat together or do activities. In the pre school and infant school years I did miss seeing more of my children during the week.

EndorsingPRActice · 05/07/2026 20:19

Mine had all their meals at nursery, breakfast, 2 course dinner and tea, plus snacks. We got home at 6pm, they had a bowl of yogurt, a bit of telly, then bath, pyjamas, teeth clean, story and bed by 7pm. They definitely didn’t need another dinner once they got back home.

ThatPeppyMauvePoster · 06/07/2026 17:16

You have an hour commute from nursery to home? That's highly unusual, most people are 5-10 minutes away from nursery.

idontknow54789 · 06/07/2026 17:20

Mine always napped on nursery days so bedtime was around 8pm. We’d eat dinner together at 6 (they had tea at nursery but always still seemed ravenous when they got home). Then played for a bit then bed. Bath every other day.

Givemeausernamepls · 06/07/2026 17:43

My now 3 year old about 6:30-7pm and sleeps for 12-13 hours. My middle child slept 8 - 5am (brutal) and oldest was more like 9-9.

by the time picked him up, walked along the walls along the road to the car. Maybe been to the shop next to the nursery and driven the 20 mins drive!

Ok so you could def make it home quicker if you wanted to. Get a weekly online shop to arrive at the weekend to avoid the shopping stop, then upon nursery pick up , get straight in the car. You’ll be home before 6 I reckon. Then quick tea eg cheese on toast and fruit then bath, story, bed for 7pm. Bish bash bosh !

Go home quicker

AlphabetCucumber · 06/07/2026 22:40

We’ve had the same routine since just before he turned 3. Bath time at 7, stories around 7:30 and we go downstairs around 8. When he was newly 3, we’d leave him to sleep then. Since he’s been 4, we leave him with his Yoto until 8:30-9ish.

You need to pick him up, carry him to the car and just get home. He's had a full day of nursery, he doesn't need extra stimulation or exercise.

Shopping done at the weekend and/ or online.

Batch cook and freeze individual small portions of bolognese, curry, etc, so you only have to boil pasta/rice and dinner is ready in 10 mins.

If they have to be in nursery for long hours then consider letting them nap at nursery if they can and up until 9pm.

my son is three and he had teatime at nursery so I just give him fruit and yoghurt pouch or home made lolly and maybe a rice cake when I pick him up from nursery, no dinner time on nursery evenings.

It takes you an hour to get home from nursery?! Chose a closer nursery!

Our pick up is 530, by 545 we have walked or scooted home and picked up big sibling on the way! Dinner at 6-630. 10min play time then bath stories and bed and settled by 715pm.

Unsure4589 · 07/07/2026 12:52

7pm for us too. DD is 4 now and it’s still 7-7.30pm. We put both kids to bed at the same time (DS is 18 months).

I just do light supper after nursery at around 5:30. The kids don’t tend to want more than that. Bath at 6ish, upstairs by 6:30, then stories and bed.

There’s not much you can do if you need to pick up at 5.30 and it takes an hour to get home. Why is your nursery so far away? Have you chosen one closer to work?

SJM1988 · 07/07/2026 12:55

7.30pm from about 2 years to 7 years. DS8 has only just moved to 8pm.
But we get up early - 6am - for getting ready for work and school.

When I picked up later, 5pm home by 5.30pm latest. Easy dinners (batch cooked meal, easy dinners etc. Bath by 630pm. Bed by 7pm. Asleep by 7.30pm
