My son looks like a girl?

Why is my partners mother throwing out shady comments like my son looks like a baby girl.
does anyone else see this as offensive or innocent?
firstly she said it was the way he was dressed and now she’s saying he actually looks like a baby girl.
is she saying these things to poke at me?

I got quite used to people peering into my daughter’s pram and saying ‘gosh, you wouldn’t mistake him for a girl, would you?’ She was a square-ish, chunky baby, bald as a coot for quite a long time, and wearing whatever clothes had come to hand when I dressed her. She hated dresses, so graduated from babygros to dungarees, and by the time she was two, she was staring strangers in the eye and saying loudly ‘actually, I’m a girl’. MiL complained about her never wearing dresses until she came to help out when I was ill. After one early morning standoff, which DD won because she calmly walked out of the house naked when it was time for nursery, MiL decided dungarees were better than no clothes at all.

Grandson was regularly mistaken for a girl even when dressed in stereotypical boys clothes. He had a cherubic face and curls. He's still a handone little boy at 7 but no longer mistaken for a girl. I wonder if it's her trying to say that he is a beautiful baby?

@LoserWinner she's gonna be one hell of a woman if she keeps sticking to her guns like that!! Didn't know toddlers were capable of calm protests 🤣

She is one tough cookie as an adult - hotshot lawyer with attitude.

I would ask her why she keeps saying that, because babies just look like babies and the kid is wearing baby clothes.

Maybe dress him in a shirt and tie next time

Once my 1yo son got a free hot chocolate in Sainsbury's cafe because the lady said 'he was the prettiest little girl she had ever seen'

He enjoyed his hot chocolate 🤣 (and I never cut his hair myself again)

All babies at 4 months look ambiguous unless you stick a bow in their hair. Just ignore her or say 'yes, he gets his beauty from me obviously '

My Nan used to make comments like this about my boys, it's very odd isn't it? I shut it down by saying pretty boys always grow into handsome men and left it at that. No idea why she said it but she can be quite outspoken in general. She was not happy when DS2 decided to grow out his hair!

I'd just reply what an odd comment and change subject.

My MIL was all pfb looks nothing like DH - I think trying to imply something - to suddenly getting over being a GM to she looks nothing like you comments - in end found pic of me at same age and other than me being slightly heavier she was the spitting image of me.

If it's a wider issue - you can try signalling with blanket colours - though once saw a little girl dressed head to foot in pink with long hair decribed as a boy by another sleep deprived mother. Four months they look a baby and as they age will obviously change - DS was a round face kid but puberty given him a very masuline face and jaw.
