Baby Preston Davey - Content warning concerns CSA (added by MNHQ)

I’ve just read about baby Preston Davey and I cannot stop thinking about him. I have a 13-month-old of my own, which is probably why this has hit me so hard — I can really relate and my baby is my everything.
I’m crying as I write this. Why does it hurt so much for a baby I’ve never even met? Has anyone else felt this way?
How do you cope with the negative thoughts that follow when you read something like this? 💙

It dosent make sense really. Neither these two freaks, nor the man who killed Elsie Scilly Hicks needed to be in this position. They choose to adopt. They engineered their own downfall and problems.

Why did they feel they needed to adopt a child? In both cases the one who gave up work was obvs home alone and doing vile things.
They could have just carried on being two blokes living together. Both at work and enjoying their lives together without the stress or upset of having children or having to give up work etc to care for a child.

These idiots are ruining their own lives. They are putting themselves into positions they didn't need to be in.
Are any time they could have owned up to authorities and said it's not working out etc. If you kill a child you will just end up ruining your own life by being banged up and hated in prison!
Also I thought the sentence for Elsie Scully murderHicks was terrible, why only 18 years? Should have been appealed.

Being in prison for ever for Varley was the best thing, but why why let it get that far?

The difference with Elsie scully hicks is they already had a child, a boy, and that adoption was successful. For whatever reason when they adopted Elsie the one parent couldn’t love her and caused her death.

A baby died. There is no difference.

There's an in depth of the vile stuff Varley did in the Mail. Not just the sexual abuse but other mental abuse such as putting baby in a spinning cup in a park and spinning him violently to "spinning around" by Kylie and keeping baby awake deliberately. He was a sadist who had a little innocent creauture at his disposal. There have been too many shocking cases in this country - Victoria Climbie, Baby P, Little Arthur, Sarah Sharif amongst others. I'm sure this won't be the last.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 05/07/2026 16:39

Of course there is no different outcome in that a baby died. The difference is that they were proven adopters for a child already so some confidence from social workers that they could do it again

YourAmplePlumPoster · 05/07/2026 16:39

The warning should be when a baby is taken to hospital on numerous occasions there is something wrong. Baby P was taken to hospital with a broken back and not checked out properly by the medical staff because he was a "bit tetchy" and sent home. Sarah was reported by teachers when she suddenly started wearing a full hijab but they were afraid of racism.

Perhaps if an adoptive parent cannot cope, there needs to be more support.

I'm not sure about this. I think if anyone needs support in this scenario, it's the child.
If an adoptive parent can't cope, then they should remove the child surely?

I’ve just seen on the BBC news website that another murdered toddler was seen the day before Preston Davey at the same hospital.
Those poor babies. Failed.

Have you got a link please?

For anyone who wants to read the article on the BBC it’s here.

Ive

I’ve said all along that this isn’t just on the SW, although I do believe Preston should have been given a local SW.

There are some pretty big failings, including the report by a Nurse not being followed up, the fracture not ringing alarm bells and safeguarding protocols being followed when thos type of fracture is a common sign of CSA and the other Nurse accepting Varley’s explanation for the bruising on Preston’s head and showing her the video.

The statement from the Chief Exec doesn’t fill me with confidence either:

”"Families bringing their children to our hospital can expect our teams to ask questions about any bumps, bruises or other injuries identified, whether recent or older.”

She’s still not framing any improvements around the safety of very vulnerable DC.

I think she needs to be part of any review. Looking at what training staff had received, what the staffing levels were like and are now and what exactly she had put in place before these two tragic and unnecessary deaths.
