Taking baby to a concert

How likely is it I'll get hassle on the door? Venue is the 02 arena.

Childcare is proving tricky - and I'd really like to go for personal reasons. Plan is to have him in a sling - where I expect him to spend the whole time bf and sleeping.

It won't be excessively loud - but I'll put a hat on him to muffle it even further.

How likely is it I'll get hassle on the door? Nothing in the T&C prohibiting children - just general statements about ensuring they're not a nuisance or exposed to inappropriate material.

I don't want to phone to ask -I think they might say 'no' just because that's the easier answer to give by phone.

Are you out of your mind?

Heifer · 20/06/2008 19:34

I really do hope this is a joke thread.....

I really don't think a hat will muffle the sound of a concert!.....

Also, I am thinking the safety factor may possibly be a worry????? Concerts tend to be a little crowded....

Fecking hell, I really do hope this is a joke! or yare you Dawn from Eastenders?????

bluefox · 20/06/2008 19:37

Dynamic - thought that too but didnt like to say so. I think a concert would be most upsetting for a baby.

Is it the London Philharmonic or My Chemical Romance?

scanner · 20/06/2008 19:41

The celebs put headphone type mufflers on their dc's. Other than that I say go for it, fgs what's wrong with going to a concert with a baby. I've been to millions of gigs and only once was there 'trouble' and that was easy to predict.

bluefox · 20/06/2008 19:46

"whats wrong with going to a concert with a baby" Are you mad??? Have you seen the crowd at a MCR or Kings of Leon concert for example?

misdee · 20/06/2008 19:48

you need proper ear protectors for little ones.

cosima · 20/06/2008 19:48

i know that you are not allowed children under 3 inside theatres for health and safety reasons.

I wouldn't take a baby to a concert at the O2. It will be way too loud

twelveyeargap · 20/06/2008 20:07

I wouldn't personally take a baby to a concert. I think it would be too loud. You can't put proper ear protectors on a tiny baby. Chris Martin's kid (the only one I can remember seeing at a gig with ear protectors) was older.

You may find the O2 objects on the basis that the "child" does not have a ticket. On ticketmaster it says all children at the O2 must have a ticket.

EffiePerine · 20/06/2008 20:08

tiny baby + loud concert? no way.

Kif · 20/06/2008 21:45

it's a bloke-with-a-guitar all seated affair rather than heavy metal-with-mosh-pit!

However, I do take the point about being very cautious with ears, even though my 'scouts' say it's not especially loud at all.

If you're seated then it's not quite so eeek, but you might want to think about what you'll do if the baby starts screaming, or needs a nappy change/feed, or vomits etc. How will you get out, where will you wait, can you get back in etc etc.

Personally there is no way on earth I'd do it with a baby in a sling, but each to their own etc etc

poppy34 · 20/06/2008 21:54

not sure about concerts... but the ear defenders below quite good (sn27)(I am not about to admit why I am interested in these as I know I'm being a deluded mother about pfb ...

CissyCharlton · 20/06/2008 21:59

I think its a stupid idea tbh. The baby will piss people off when it starts to cry, especially those people who've paid for a babysitter for their own kids. I've missed loads of things over the past few years (including a party tommorrow night) because I can't get a babysitter.

findtheriver · 20/06/2008 22:41

What a ridiculous idea!

spicemonster · 20/06/2008 22:44

Silly idea. It isn't about if you'll get hassle, it's about if you and the baby will enjoy it. And you won't. And you'll ruin the night for everyone else too.

Rachmumoftwo · 20/06/2008 22:51

Children under three are allowed in theatres, and I took my youngest to shows like Hi5 and Beauty and the Beast. But I would not take a baby or young child to a concert or show aimed at adults, as it is not the right place for them. Too loud and crowded, and likely to ruin the enjoyment of others.

4madboys · 20/06/2008 22:57

i shall disagree and say as you will be seated and the baby will be in a sling and bfeeding whats the problem, have done similar with ds1, only it was a VERY noisy pub concert and he was fine.

you know your baby and if you think it will be ok then go for it but be prepared to leave if it all goes pearshaped

4madboys · 20/06/2008 22:58

oh and depending on the knd of sling you have and if you wear a coat over the top as you go in, they may not even notice the baby

Jackstini · 20/06/2008 23:01

As she was only 9 weeks old I was going to take dd out when the rock band came on at a wedding we were at...
She slept through it - a whole hour!

AggiePanther · 20/06/2008 23:05

I took DD to a Cerys Matthews concert (seated) when she was 3 months old - she slept through the entire thing

want2bayummymummy · 20/06/2008 23:16

but wont it hurt their little ears , i did not even know ya could take them lol

minorityrules · 20/06/2008 23:23

The O2 is enormous, a man with a guitar will have many many speakers/amp thingies so everyone can hear him, it will be loud!!

Not a good idea (from someone who took all her kids to very loud gigs from the age of 3)

suepoo · 21/06/2008 00:09

OK - I worked for many years as a manager in a west end theatre. These are the rules regarding children in live entertainment venues.

Children under 5 are not admitted to performances as a general rule. This rule is waived if special dispensation is received from licensing authorities for particular performances, eg, Hi5 and Beauty and the Beast.

Children have to be able to sit unattended in their own seat and in the case of evacuation be able to walk unaided from the premises. If children are taken to a venue without a ticket, to sit on a parents lap or in a sling, then they effectively cease to exist once through the door if there is an evacuation.

These are the boring basics, sorry. They are likely to turn you away if they catch you. Have had to turn many babies and toddlers away from venues I have managed and it is always a really uncomfortable situation.

gigglewitch · 21/06/2008 00:34

hope i'm not putting coal on the fire but in the circumstances you have described i think it actually depends mostly on the age of the baby. my very small dc came to classical concerts and dance shows, they spent their time bf-ing underneath my huge fleecy poncho [ok this is a good few years ago and such garments were "in"...] I wouldn't have taken them past 5 or 6 months old though. Please don't hang me for giving my point of view, ladies and just for the record, the concerts weren't loud, just nice soothing classical stuff.
