Are Pikler climbing sets worth it for a 19 month old?

I have a 19 month old climber. Would you recommend the pikler climbing sets? They seem odd, but very popular on Instagram. I'm worried about safety, I imagine you'd have to hold on to them all the time? I already have the climbing cushions but they're too easy for him now.

Anything else anyone recommends?

I want him to climb on something other than the furniture 😂

The ones that are only half a metre tall? Can't really see the safety issue personally, my 2 year old fell from 2m onto grass and survived, so half a metre should be ok.
What particularly is a worry?

My nearly 3 year old still uses is (link below). And any child that comes over is also obsessed with it.

At first you have to be behind him but as they get older and more confident you can start to back off.

We have a pikler triangle set, similar to the one someone linked above. We got it when our DD was about 15 months. She climbs on it plenty, but it doesn't stop her climbing on the rest of the furniture lol.

I don't stand there and hold it either. We have some foam puzzle piece mats underneath it and she's taken some tumbles, but she does that of the sofa too.

I also got one with the idea of stopping him climbing furniture (this did not happen ), however he uses it loads. He also uses it for putting cars/teddies/balls down. I’ve also used it to build him little dens and things. Really useful toy for that age.

QuantumPanic · 06/04/2026 06:46

They're really low, not dangerous and you don't have to hold on. My 13 month old has been climbing one confidently for months. She still climbs all the furniture though.

JollyGreenSleeves · 06/04/2026 07:24

It looks lovely, but can’t see it lasting very long as it’s so low, wouldn’t be challenging for very long I wouldn’t think.

Nodwyddaedafedd · 06/04/2026 07:33

We had one with a arch like wobble board that went onto it like a little slide. Only got rid cos we were moving - children 8 and 5. Bought for the little one so we had a good 4 years out of it which is say was a win!

Ok I am now feeling really old, but can't you just tell your toddlersnot to climb on funotire and take them to the park/soft play/ swimming daily ( frequently twice daily) ? There were also one a clock clubs which had climbing equipmemt when mine were little. I wouldn't have wanted some thing so big in my living room.

No, they want to play at home. That’s not a bad thing as opposed to being plugged on a screen.

We've had a lot of use out of ours - bought for the eldest who is now 4. The youngest (2) loves it. It is a pain to have in the living room for size but it is such a good activity and they can be mostly independent once they are confident. We do have a bounce rug under it.

Tell me you didn’t ever raise a climber without telling me you didn’t ever raise a climber😂

Catsonskis · 06/04/2026 08:31

We got one when my eldest (nearly 6) was 1, they still regularly get it out. We got the slide attachment and they love that and use it to make shops, restaurants, stages for their dolls to do shows, use with the magnatiles and marble run.

bunnyvsmonkey · 06/04/2026 08:33

I have a climber. He'd be bored by these in two days and have shunted them up against something else and be on top of the kitchen cupboard where he would have real fun.

Quadro for the garden is better I think.

BuffaloCauliflower · 06/04/2026 08:33

Ours has got loads of use over the years. My DS could climb it at 8 months old (but couldn’t get over the top) I never held him, why would you? If you let kids learn how to use their bodies they will learn. It’s not far to fall if they do.

User1367349 · 06/04/2026 08:34

We got ours at 12 months and it got loads of use, especially on those rainy days when there weren’t any groups on due to Covid. My eldest was a serious climber, up the stairs at 7 months.

You don’t need to watch over them all the time, just at the start. One you have taught them how to carefully get over the top, it does give hours of fun. Get the 1m + tall one though, not the mini ones, and some slide attachments which can double up as a car racing slide.

Totally agree with this.

Got a piklar triangle with slide for DS's 1st birthday and didn't feel the needs to hover around him as its really low (but also he was a very very careful climber, completely opposite to his sister!)
Got years of use out of it too, well worth the money. Our cat enjoyed it as well Grin

bigbadbitchface · 06/04/2026 10:06

I got one with slide and curved frame as well for DD but she outgrew it quite quickly. Also didn’t have huge space for it so had to keep it packed away and set up only when using. I ended up selling to local nursery in the end a few years later.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 06/04/2026 10:14

Not worth it in my opinion. We bought a playgroup style climbing frame instead. It lasted her until she was 7 and would have gone on for longer if I hadn't wanted the space back.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 06/04/2026 10:23

We had a set of Quadro, we bought second hand. We loved the fact that it could be built into all sorts of different shapes and would grow with our children. It started off in the dining room and then progressed to the garden as it got bigger. It's still available.

We had that, or something similar, when I was a kid! Absolutely loved it.

Caspianberg · 06/04/2026 11:13

No it’s safe. Ds had from around 1 year. He still uses now at 5 years to chill under like a den in his bedroom

ours has loads of use. At 1-3 years he would climb it constantly all day. We also have climbing things in garden or go places but you can’t do that in rain or every early morning or evening.

This child has been walking and running since he was 10 months. We go out AT LEAST twice a day.

And yes, he does get told not to climb and he does listen. But I'd just like something to tire him out without me having to go out constantly!

Space is not an issue.

It looks terrific! If my daughter has a child I’ll definitely offer to buy one. It looks fantastic for building motor skills, balance and confidence.
