The great tragedy of Numberblocks

I've always admired Numberblocks, I think it's a perfect maths show and I wish it was around when I was little. DD has always enjoyed it and watched it sporadically through the years. She didn't pay much attention to the times tables episodes when she was a preschooler because she didn't get what they were about but I thought this is going to be so useful when the time comes. Now she's in Year 2 and doing her times tables, she won't watch Numberblocks because it's babyish! ☹️ I told her, it's not babyish! Numberblocks covers things I didn't do until I was at the end of primary school! Nope. I'll put it on for her toddler brother and hope she gets distracted watching it 😄 Any other Numberblocks appreciators here?

I bloody love Numberblocks! It explains everything so clearly and engagingly via the medium of West End musical-quality songs (IMHO 😂).

My youngest still watches occasionally but like you, I'm sad that it only features sporadically now.

KillTheTurkey · 14/02/2026 08:46

My two are 13 and 9 and still watch it occasionally 😵‍💫 the songs are bangers, though. They’re both really good at maths, so perhaps there’s a correlation?

I love Four on the Floor and There's So Much More to Explore 🎶

Number blocks is a horror show according to my, now teen, children. It used to terrify them, like proper scare them, which was a shame as the numbers part was good.

They have grown into normal teens but still don't like anything creepy, or wooden spoons.

I also miss Numberblocks, and Alphablocks! My DC are 13 and nearly 9 now, so it's a thing if the distant past for them, but we all still remember (and sometimes sing) some of the songs. You're right that they are West End musical quality, @Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr . Especially, 'There's So Much More to Exlore', and 'Song' from Alphablocks is a proper grand finale number 🤣

It’s the weird eyes

RipplePlease · 14/02/2026 08:55

Is Numberblocks the one with the tall creepy guy in a white suit and white top hat who walks around in a catatonic state?

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 14/02/2026 08:56

My eldest loved Numberblocks and still loves maths now. I just asked if he wanted me to put it on and he said no. Sad times.

(He’s nearly 10)

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 14/02/2026 08:58

My kids loved numberblocks and watched it all through primary school. They are teens now and both look likely to do STEM degrees

DecafSoyaLatteExtraShotPlease · 14/02/2026 08:59

Alphablocks was a massive contributor in my non verbal child starting to talk. He still loves numberblocks now at 7

ThatLassFromLeeds · 14/02/2026 09:00

@RipplePlease@SamBeckettslastleapThere’s nothing creepy in Numberblocks - are you thinking of Numberjacks?

There are a couple of episodes of Numberblocks which I’ve shown to teenagers I’m tutoring for GCSE 😂 They love it!

Oh no! Imo it is Numberjacks that is scary....

anotherfinemess1 · 14/02/2026 09:02

Numberblocks is magical! We returned to it last summer (end of Y4) as my son was struggling with his tables, and watched all the tables songs episodes over the holiday. It’s completely worked and Y5 Maths is now apparently fun! I’m just sad he’s embarrassed about it and doesn’t want anyone to know.

Brewtiful · 14/02/2026 09:02

I think some posters are confusing number blocks and number jacks.

Number blocks is brilliant and I still regularly use clips during my maths inputs even for KS2 children. Definitely not too babyish.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/02/2026 09:03

Number blocks, Alphablocks and The Lingo Show were brilliant kids TV. I never felt too bad about my previous poppers rotting their brains in front of the telly for them. Although there were days when DS would only speak in the Lingo of the day!! He was very surprised when his swimming teacher answered him in Mandarin!

Keroppi · 14/02/2026 09:05

Lol maybe put "maths mansion" on YouTube for them with Chris Jarvis, it's more grown up
I'm also a fan of the weird baddies in Numberjacks Grin the number blob made me laugh.
Numberblocks is really great. They've got new episodes out this week! Doing tables and pictograms and so on

BBC bitesize has some great Maths games too, Mathematica and Karate Cats are the stand out ones, highly recommend

LeafHunter · 14/02/2026 09:08

DS is three and loves it. He calls it “1,2,3” and will watch as much as I let him. All DHs family did maths at uni and DS is fairly competent with his number skills but I don’t know how much is the family thing and how much is number blocks

SockQueen · 14/02/2026 09:13

My DS2 is in year 2 and still loves Number blocks! He is very very good at maths (does his y4 brother's maths work quicker than him - and DS1 is good too!) and I definitely think NB has helped him with some of the concepts etc. I enjoy watching it too and admire just how clever some of the representations are.

Icecreamandcoffee · 14/02/2026 09:16

Number blocks is fantastic and often displays maths concepts in really easy, visual ways with a great song to go along with it. I've used number blocks as part of my teaching career.

I'm disappointed that the BBC have pretty much confined it as a "toddler show" in children's minds by placing it on cbeebies. Understandable in the earlier series when it was all counting and 1:1 correspondence based but once they started venturing into times tables and more complex maths concepts those episodes should have moved to cbbc - I know you can find them on the bbc app and many are on youtube. Whilst there may be a few little maths geniuses I highly doubt the average 2 year old is doing times tables.

Bubbles332 · 14/02/2026 09:19

Numberblocks is amazing and developed with the NCETM so all the concepts they introduce are linked to a deep knowledge of child development. I used to show ‘How to Count’ when I taught Reception because a lot of children still struggled with cardinality and 1:1 correspondence. The one with Blockzilla is the best way I’ve seen of explaining inequality symbols to kids. It’s definitely still suitable for a year 2 child! The later episodes anyway.

I find myself singing the 14 song a lot.

SamBeckettslastleap · 14/02/2026 09:20

AHH, that makes sense then, I couldn't understand the love for it.

Octagonchecker · 14/02/2026 09:41

Glad there are lots of others who like it! I'm wondering whether because at age 7 she's just discovered self-consciousness and the concept of cool and not cool. Maybe if I give it till age 9 she'll come back around to it as an ironic enjoyment 😉

I loved Numberjacks! I might even have watched it without my kids on occasion.

I'm doing a wander down Memory Lane with my DC this half term. We're going to watch a single episode of a favourite TV series that they enjoyed about ten years ago, a different series each day. So far, we've got In The Night Garden, Guess With Jess and Baby Jake on the list. I'll add Numberjacks too!
