ADHD diagnosis

I really need to get my child diagnosed with ADHD but as I don’t have a second setting I am unable to get them diagnosed, does anyone know what I can do in this situation or has anyone ever been in this situation? They are not currently at school so don’t have them to ask and there is no where else I can ask. How do adults get diagnosed if you need two settings? Can anyone help thanks.

Round my way, 14 is already too late. It’s years on the nhs - first appointment is a few years, next one a few years more; and when they reach 18, you have to start from scratch with an adult diagnosis. The problem is there are just too many who - and they genuinely all have it - have adhd. I think we’ll discover it’s more typical than anything else.

It’s right to choose they told me it would be around a year, so it depends on area.

My daughter has just been diagnosed AuADHD, she is 17 and was assessed last September when she was 16, she had been home educated since 14, so had no educational setting, she had just started at college the month she was assessed so they didn't know much about her and had very little information to go on. When she was waiting to be assessed, I asked them what would happen as she didn't have an educational setting, and they said We could ask a family member who did not live in our household to complete a second setting form in this case it would have been my oldest daughter.

Thank you I will double check with them hopefully that would be allowed.

Did she have previous reports from school showing issues with concentration etc.

adhd according to nhs cant be masked.
That is why you need 2 settings.
I would just wait the 6m and use the tutor. If they can’t see issues 1-2-1 then its likely not adhd.
You can chat to the tutor and point out the issues you see. - interrupting/getting up, doodling, daydreaming, disorganisation

We had issues with school not completing accurately despite loads of issues at school. And even when we had chatted to the class tutor and pointed out all the issues, still completed wrong. A qb test proved it though…

Why are you in a rush - im assuming gcses? As extra time etc is through proof of using the extra time.

Im not paying for the tutor it’s alternative provision so we have to take what we’ve been given.

How did you access alternative provision for her? There must be reports written by other agencies for her to be eligible for AP. Ask the author of those reports to complete the form

No I need her medicated thats why im in a rush. Nothing to do with GCSEs she won’t be taking them. She does not mask just worried as the tutor seems very inexperienced and dont want her to fill it out wrong.

The LA arranged the alternative provision, they have not met my daughter. Alternative provision is because I am no longer home educating.

You need her medicated? Do you mean you both think she would cope better day to day by taking medication? Not all people with ADHD require medication and even those who do use it as part of a broader approach rather than just using it in isolation?

She needs the medication for ADHD. And yes she does need it.

We can’t speak to a school nurse because she isn’t on the roll at any school. This is through the GP and the company are saying a second setting needs to fill in the form.

I’m sure you can still speak to the School Nurse Service flr your area and speak to them? So for instance, if you’re in Hertfordshire google Hertfordshire School Nurse.

Does she want to be medicated? Not everyone with ADHD does. What other things is she doing to help her if ADHD is suspected? Do you encourage meditation, exercise etc?

It would be her choice though. Has she discussed with a GP or taken any other approaches to help her manage day to day?

Well considering she has limited understanding then no she can’t offer an opinion. I have to make the decision as her parent. What do you have against medication? Would you suggest she shouldn’t be medicated if it was something other than adhd?

I’ve been to the GP they are unable to offer any alternatives, are you against giving melatonin to autistic kids as well that don’t sleep? Should that also be their choice whether they sleep or not? She doesn’t have the understanding to make a decision for herself so I as the parent have to make the decision.

Are you able to afford a private Qb check? This can be used as your second setting.

doglover90 · 08/02/2026 17:00

I am quite concerned that you would be happy to force your child to take medication and you don't seem remotely interested in finding out if there is any other way she could be supported.

If she has little understanding I'm surprised she's not under the care of any services. Did the GP not direct you towards services such as camhs or SENDIASS?

How can you force a 14 year old? She won’t be forced but we will be trying it would you say the same if it was a different medical condition?

Sendiass for what? I’ve spoken to them many times before they are useless. But they don’t keep you under their “service” it’s just an advice line.

Son is in the process of diagnosis for ADHD, only required information from school and parents. Daughter diagnosed as an adult (18), information from herself and from parents only required.

My DD didn't her second setting as she masked so heavily at school. The private provider I was using told me to get a Qb check to use as our second setting.

The person doing the Qb check was amazing and hugely experienced so gave lots of advice too. She even made the private provider conduct a dual assessment as she was certain DD has autism too.

This is right to choose psicon, so not private? Not sure if they will accept that then

For support. If she's unable to make decisions at 14 then it sounds like there is potentially a lot more going on than just ADHD. If you've spoken to them before and not found them useful then that is unfortunate but they have always been a useful resource in my experience for support with questions and especially for filling in paperwork.

Yes she is autistic but that’s not relevant to this thread im asking about adhd. She was diagnosed as autistic at 2.

The reason I chose my private provider was because they also conducted the NHS assessments in our area, they accept Qb checks for NHS patients too but I don't know if all do.
