Reported to social services

My local authority went on to fortnightly collections and since then I have struggled so much with rubbish! I have 4 kids and there is too much to last 2 weeks! I don’t have a car so can’t take it anywhere myself and can’t dump it anywhere. So because of this and it being Xmas I have had extra rubbish! A few times the foxes have torn the bags open if it’s not in the bin and I clean it but still left with additional rubbish as my local authority won’t collect any additional rubbish and will only collect what’s IN the bin. I have admitted this is a struggle for me as sometimes bin collectors don’t turn up then I’m left with a situation where the rubbish hasn’t been collected for even longer. Well someone has reported me to SOCIAL SERVICES!! Because of this, Social services! Really! I’m so upset that someone would do this. What will happen now?!

if my bin gets filled, I take it to the main road which gets emptied first, then I bring it back to my close and fill it up with more bags, as the come to my close 40 minutes later. This works out well for me. Could you do that? Keep the bags in your garden for now, and pick up any of your rubbish outside.

That’s a really good idea! I have no idea what route they take I might have to try to figure it out as that would be very helpful

You'd really think that Social Services would have bigger fish to fry!!

Ilovemyshed · 13/01/2026 15:14

In the short term, pay a licensed waste collector to sort the initial problem, then think hard about what rubbish you make and how you dispose/ crush and recyle. Family of three here and we usually only put half a bin out every two weeks and a two thirds full recycle bin 🤷🏽‍♀️

Unfortunately they are usually full too which is why I know it’s not just me struggling but I will try to look further out as the ones by my house tend to be full.

Be careful because in our area they now claim to fine for this - notices all over the public bins £1000 fine.

Though in one hoilday location putting rubbish in public bins on collection day is how they like hoilday lets to deal with the rubbish.

They have to follow up a referral but won't waste further time if this is the only problem.

I really don't understand that you can create so much rubbish! I know our household is light these days because the kids are mostly no longer at home other than the holidays, but I put out a box half full of recycling most or every other week. Food waste 2x a year, and general waste about once a month sometimes longer. So far this year they had 1 food waste bin (turkey bones) and 1 recycling bin!

Almost everything can be recycled these days.
Plastic - anything that comes in the post that comes in a plastic bag, I cyt the corner open carefully to extract the goods, then stuff EVERY bit of soft plastic in the hole and keep squishing it in, till the bag is solidly full, that then goes to the supermarket for recycling they have a bin by the door.
Paper - flatten every box, in the recycling
Plastics & tins - flatten before recycling
Food scraps (not eaten by dog/horse - we have one loves swede) are composted (if veg), if not are frozen in a bag to go in the food waste bin
Glass - we drive past a bottle bank
Nappies - consider terry squares for at home and really cut the waste. Potty train as early as possible get them to copy the older child that uses the toilet, most kids if you talk to them get the idea and want to try before 12-15 months esp if they've one to copy, If not, fill a separate bag with these and squish the air out well before putting in your waste bin.

Do you take a broom to the bin and squish down to get more in like my neighbour does (she has masses of waste and doesn't recycle plastics I know) ?
Can you take a car full to the tip?

Sorry derailing the thread but how do you
put out food waste twice a year???
it must be rotten?

BustyLaRoux · 13/01/2026 15:23

OP how much do you recycle? I used to live in a household with 4 DC and we usually managed not to completely fill our bin (also fortnightly collection). But we did recycle a lot! Including food waste. I presume if animals are ripping open your extra bags then there is food in there? Doesn’t your LA take food waste? Considering they won’t accept additional bags I don’t understand why you would leave them outside. Obviously if these had food waste in them they would attract animals and if there was no hope of them being collected, why would you leave them outside to attract vermin?

I do sympathise about missed collections. We had a spate of them a couple of years back. The bins were ok but the recycling would be missed every single week. It went on for six weeks. My house was overflowing with recycling! We did report the missed collections but they’d not send anyone to pick them up, and then the same thing would happen the next week, and the next… I think our MP had to get involved in the end.

Christmas does seem to create a lot of extra rubbish (although surely most of this is packaging and can be recycled?) I would definitely look to reduce your waste if you can, especially food waste if this service is offered.

Also if you know what time they usually come and collect the rubbish, and your elderly neighbours bin isn’t remotely full, can you leap out when they’re on your road and whack a bag or two in her bin just before it’s collected? I’d be tempted!

Composting. It literally says. (Though I also initially thought 2 x per year must surely be a typo!)

Friendlygingercat · 13/01/2026 15:24

If the people who reported you have empty bins then dump some of your rubbish in theirs under cover of darkness! Will serve them right for being snitches. I hate bloody snitches.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 13/01/2026 15:26

Post on your local FB page and ask if anyone would be willing to drive the rubbish to the tip for £20? Someone will be up for it

Perfect28 · 13/01/2026 15:27

Are you recycling and using your food waste bin?

They could fly tip it and, if there is anything identifying in it, the OP will be fined. That's not a good idea.

Aluna · 13/01/2026 15:28

Just buy some more wheely bins so that if the binmen miss a collection at least there’s secure storage for the bags.

Definitelynotme2022 · 13/01/2026 15:29

Please don't panic about Social Services, they're there to help. I've had first hand recent experience with my teenage ds, and they were brilliant. Let them speak to the school, it might just help resolve things faster. It sounds like a ridiculous referral by a busybody with nothing better to do.

As for the rubbish, if you can't afford a one off skip/ bag/ man & van (make sure they're registered, and not fly tipping!) type thing, then use the eldest of said children to jump your bin down! I've done this lots of times over the years.

For the future, squash absolutely everything you can. The kids will enjoy helping you jump on boxes, plastic bottles etc, turn it into a game.

Definitely get in touch with your local councillor and explain your issues, and ask for help. Maybe they can get you a one off collection and a larger or extra bin.

So she could go with them to the tip

LancashireButterPie · 13/01/2026 15:32

Oh I'd be tempted to have a great big fuck off bonfire with effigy of the neighbour on top.
Extra joy if it's as they've put their washing out.

Fair enough if they were willing to do that. A friend of mine got caught and fined when a neighbour with a van offered to take their old sofa to the tip and then fly tipped it.

LoudPlumDog · 13/01/2026 15:33

Gosh I am glad I don’t live in the UK. What poor services.

I can’t read apparently. I still don’t really understand. Food waste is collected every fortnight here, I don’t see how it benefits anyone to freeze it and put it out less often 🤷🏻‍♀️

pouletvous · 13/01/2026 15:33

SS dont have time for that

report the missed collection to the council and they will come abd get it

Can you imagine the neighbour then though? They'd be on the phone to SS straight away "she's now putting the child in the bin".

IncessantNameChanger · 13/01/2026 15:34

We have four kids. Our council has given us extra recycling bins and a half size black bin..check to see if your eligible too?

zipadeeday · 13/01/2026 15:35

Mucky1 · 13/01/2026 14:49

Get a skip they’re about £80 and chuck it all in there plus anything else you’ve had knocking about that needs to go 🙌

£80 😂

LakieLady · 13/01/2026 15:35

RollOnSunshine · 13/01/2026 14:07

We fill our recyling bin much more than our black bin. Are you recycling properly?

Same here. I'd say my recyling is 4-5 times the volume of my non-recyclable rubbish, and at least 6x my food waste.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/01/2026 15:36

zipadeeday · 13/01/2026 15:35

£80 😂

Evidently just spare cash to some people.
