Advice please - is this safe for baby to wear in the car?

I am a first time mum to an 11 week old, and I just wanted a bit of advice

I understand the baby is not allowed padded clothing in the car- pramsuit and coats etc

Would the below be too thick to wear in the car?

Probably fine as long as you don’t have the car too warm. You can open it easily too

the whole snowsuits thing are a waste of money unless you live in the polar regions/and or are outside literally all day. It’s very rarely that cold here these days. And in in Manchester which isn’t known for being the warmest!

Clearinguptheclutter · 20/12/2025 12:40

I sometimes used to take coats etc off and put as a blanket on top

JollyJadeEagle · 20/12/2025 12:43

Looks sensible to me! It's the padded ones you have to be wary of, because they contain air that would be compressed by the belt in an emergency x

I would have it unbuttoned so it's not a puffy but it would be ok.

I have a 14 week old and I do cardigan and blanket in the car or popping in and out of shops. Snowsuit when in the pram/sling outdoors, with my eldest was in snowsuits from October to April each year and expect to have to do the same.

Caspianberg · 20/12/2025 14:23

I wouldn’t.

Anything with hoods and small baby is a pain as hood gets in the way or bunched up uncomfortable if not up.

Plus our car gets really warm after about 10 mins so I would worry baby overheats. I used just regular knit cardigan. Add hat, booties, mittens and blanket ontop if cold outside as all ontop so easy to remove or add again if in and out. You can add thinner blanket and another thicker if your using on pram wheels sometimes

Bethymum · 20/12/2025 15:52

I wouldn’t, looks like a coat to ne. I avoid all coats.

I've never actually thought about what a baby should west in a car seat. That little jacket is gorgeous 😍

LavenderBlue19 · 20/12/2025 17:53

They shouldn't have a hood on in the car either. I'm not sure why, can't remember now but I got told off by the In Car Safety Centre staff when we went to buy a new car seat for my then-toddler 😬

We used to keep a blanket on the back seat and tuck it around to keep it in.

Birdsnevergohungry · 20/12/2025 18:29

I would not put this on in the car seat ad
S it looks like a coat which would too thick. Paticularly because it has a hood which bunces up and could mess with thier head position. If you are concerned about warmth, have a small blanket to put over them in the car seat.

Autumn1990 · 20/12/2025 20:33

I used to use a blanket and they would wear an old fashioned knitted cardigan!
The fleece baby grows are good for colder weather
Still take my kids coats off before getting in the car and they’re in high backed boosters now!

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 20/12/2025 21:03

All the extra padding behind the car seat cushions make my son boil up if he has anything more than a jumper on. Can you do cardigan in the car, and pile blankets on top (also easier if they are sick or poonami in the seat FYI).

Ritual9 · 20/12/2025 21:06

My DS had this jacket and I would take it off in the car, I just kept a few blankets in the boot for him. It is a pain though having to keep taking coats on and off!

girlmum88 · 20/12/2025 21:11

Hello! This isn't safe because it is quite thick and has a hood. There are two issues - ensuring a really good fit in the seat and making sure that baby doesn't overheat. Well done for asking! xx

BackinBlack24 · 20/12/2025 21:11

Avoid anything with a hood it will get in the way of the straps on the car seat

MyChristmasCheerHasBuggeredOff · 20/12/2025 21:57

No i wouldnt. The straps should be very tight. Look at youtuve videos to tell you how tight straps should be. This would hinder that

Sillysaussicon · 20/12/2025 22:21

No, you would have to loose then traps to go over shoulder so not safe from that perspective, you wouldn't get a safe (or comfortable fit). Also would be warm and fastens around neck, anything that might restrict the neck movement or cause baby to overheat could also be an issue. Babies need to be able to freely move their necks as car seats can cause them to slump down and occlude their airway. Really it's best to avoid at all. Probably nothing would happen, but you asked if it's 'safe' and strictly speaking from the guidance from NHS, national accident prevention etc. it wouldn't count as safe.

FancyLimePoet · 20/12/2025 22:22

It’s not about the warmth. It’s the fact that chunk layers affect how secure the harness is and kids can be catapulted out of their jackets and out of the belt in an accident. So I probably wouldn’t tbh. Just use a blanket. The only jackets that are supposed to be safe are the star suits like the ones from tuppence and crumble.

Mossstitch · 20/12/2025 22:29

I do a lot of hand knitting and the young mums at work love them for this purpose, they keep baby cosy but safe in car seats. Do you have anybody you know that knits and can make you some suitable garments? Much cheaper too, i could make 3 or 4 for that price.🧶

unfortunately even they aren't recommended due to the fleecy fabric and having the hood part as it can cause overheating and a bad fit with the harness.

OP you're best to layer up so you can take the cardigan/coat etc off for in the car, then use a blanket if it's cold enough over their legs.

cocobanana922 · 21/12/2025 06:03

No, absolutely NOT okay for a car seat. A thin cardigan at the most. Then cover with a blanket.

FinallyMrsT · 21/12/2025 13:31

I had this cost for my little one earlier in the year. No it is not OK for a car seat!
No thick coats.
Light thin layers!
Get cardigans or jumpers.
Put a blanket over them!

Harriethulas · 21/12/2025 20:20

I’ve always just kept a blanket in the back seat and popped it on my kids when it’s very cold, otherwise I find a sleepsuit or trousers/jumper combo is warm enough. They get so snug and hot in a car seat. Also agree hoodies are a pain for babies that small, they’re hard to get them into and the hood isn’t comfy for them as it bunches at the back. I use star wraps or snowsuits that zip all the way down the leg when out and about in the cold.

ttcat37 · 22/12/2025 05:06

Hi OP. This is not safe for the car seat. It’s too thick, meaning the straps will not get as tight as they should do, and it also risks baby overheating. The hood also effects the fit of the straps, as you won’t be able to get them close enough to the neck. Babies shouldn’t have theirs heads covered in the car as it’s an overheating risk, so no hoods/ hats.
Mine at 11 weeks would be in a long sleeved bodysuit and trousers in this weather in the car seat. If it’s especially cold I might add a thin cardigan.
Hope that helps- it’s so hard when you’re a new mum, nobody gives you a manual and how are you supposed to know these things!!

PlantsAndSpaniels · 22/12/2025 09:29

For an older child it wouldn't be much of a problem providing you can get the straps close enough to their neck, but its so hard with babies as there's lots of fabric with cardigains and jackets. Normal indoor clothes are best and a blanket over the top.
