My ds has just come home and told me he forgot his friend is having his birtday tonight at a restaurant in town.He wants to go with his 2 friends and it finishes at 10.If he had told me yesterday I could have arranged for dp to pick him up but dp is at work and can't get hold of him atm Dp works opposite the restaurant and finishes wotk at 9.45 so thats ok in theory if i contact him in time.I said make sure you have money and phone and he says he has no money yet had £35 on saturday He is 14

and breathe...........

Remember the mantra...

This too will pass..............

This too will pass..........................

fryalot · 10/06/2008 16:21

and you are surprised by this because?

they are 'orrible aren't they! dd1 (also 14) rarely tells me anything, yet expects me to know everything and never has any money, even minutes after being given it!

Take a deep breath
count to ten
make that twenty

and now try dp again.

If you can't get through to dp I think it is fair enough for you to tell him he can't go. He should have given you more notice and he should not be expecting you to pay for this. £35 is a lot to spend since Saturday.

noddyholder · 10/06/2008 16:21

He has gone to cashpoint to take out imaginary money!

I know he had to get a key cut because he lost yet another and that cost about 4 yet we haven't heard the end of it

fizzbuzz · 10/06/2008 16:28

Oooh..they drive you mad, lost keys, lost money, informing you thy are going out 30 seconds before doing so..........

Ds has a lovely mobile...never ever takes it anywhere though.............

fryalot · 10/06/2008 16:30

dd1 takes her mobile everywhere.

She just forgets to take it off "silent" so you can't ring her and she has wasted all her credit texting her mate (who is sitting next to her at the time!!!!!) so she can't call you. But she can listen to music on it, so it's not a complete waste of space

noddyholder · 10/06/2008 16:36

OK hes back no money in account so has spent 30 since saturday!I am saying no to going into town at night on a school day with no money.I have no cash and no machine near here either Am now big bad wolf and have teengaer with attitude to put up with tonight

noddyholder · 10/06/2008 17:05

Can I just ask what you all do in this situation. You have said no it is not going to change but teenager skulks around saying he is always the one not allowed blah blah and keeps on as if i will give in eventually.

mumblechum · 10/06/2008 17:08

Are you sure the parents aren't paying? That would be normal in ds's group of mates.

noddyholder · 10/06/2008 17:12

The parents are paying but he has no bus fares etc and i have no cash in teh house to put in the card so asked him to and he said he had no money but we gave him 30 on saturday! He wants me to let him go to town on a school night with no cash and no credit on his phone and its now my fault.I think he needs to learn the value of £

OP posts:
mumblechum · 10/06/2008 17:18

I'd work out a way of getting there, lend him a tenner (presumably theres an ATM in the town where the party is?), then take the money off his next allowance.

But I'm soft as shit

noddyholder · 10/06/2008 17:22

That is what i'd normally do but this time its no.He really needs to learn as he is totally not bothered that he ahs spent 30 quid and doesn't know or care what on.He says he just buys what he likes and doesn't care or look at price.I have to stick to my guns here and have spoken to dp and he agrees BUT the huffing and puffing in the background is going to finish me off

mumblechum · 10/06/2008 17:25

Earplugs. Or find him a job at the very end of the garden where you can't hear him.

why do you give him so much in one go?
ds gets 15 a week. if I gave him $60 it would be gone in a day.(sorry know that doesn't help)

2shoes · 10/06/2008 17:34

£ not $

noddyholder · 10/06/2008 17:35

He took it from his account and that was all his £ for teh month

OP posts:
ButterflyMcQueen · 10/06/2008 17:37

no way i would let him go sorry

but this from the woman who told her almost 14 year old dd ' i dont want an argument' and dd retorted 'well i do'

no hope - its unbearable

i sympathise

noddyholder · 10/06/2008 17:39

I never thought i'd say it but the terrible 2s was preferable to this.

claricebeansmum · 10/06/2008 17:46

At least when they were 2 you could pick them up and put them in a cot/playpen/wherever and go to sing loudly in the kitchen to regain composure.

I think you stick to your guns on this.

He has to learn that you cannot magically give him money when he has mysteriously spent his. I think it is one of the pains of this age group - the money burns a hole in their pocket and then they grumble when they don't have any.

I also think it is very rude. You have obviously prepared a lovely supper for the family tonight and the food will go to waste.

noddyholder · 10/06/2008 17:53

He has stopped the huge sighs but is still lying on the sofa in a right mood.Tbh i don't want him in town at 10pm on a school night with no£ and no phone I think he gets it now

OP posts:
claricebeansmum · 10/06/2008 17:55

Well done.

Of course you have to brace yourself for tomorrow when he comes home to tell you how EVERYONE was there, that it was BRILLIANT and he is now the LOSER KID because of YOU.

ButterflyMcQueen · 10/06/2008 17:57
