Once a week baths for baby and four year old

Is this okay?
Neither the baby (9 months) or the four year old seem remotely stinky. We wipe their faces, necks and hands every day.
Am I the only one who doesn’t bath their children every day..?

We bathed daily. It was a big part of their bedtime routine and if that helped them to sleep all night it was worth every second.
Skin was fine.

Blanketpolicy · 18/10/2025 18:56

I like to shower daily, not because I stink but because it makes me feel nicer. So I did the same for ds most nights, once he got to 7-8 yo he was showering every morning before school himself by choice.

menopausalfart · 18/10/2025 18:57

My DM bathed me on a Sunday in a bath in front of the fire. 😂
Mine got bathed every other day.

As babies / toddlers / pre schoolers my three were bathed every day not just because they were dirty, had food in their hair etc but also because it helped them wind down and marked the end of playtime and the beginning of a bedtime routine. None of them have any skin problems or dryness.

Livpool · 18/10/2025 19:16

Every other day here - after a week DS would have been dirty

SErunner · 18/10/2025 19:17

I mean, each to their own but ours are filthy at the end of each day - they are bathed out of necessity rather than choice!

Patchymama · 18/10/2025 19:20

First child, daily.
Second child, weekly.
Third child, monthly. Whether she needs it or not.

Miceloveme · 18/10/2025 19:29

Don't bath mine everyday it made there excema worse. I bath them every 2-3 days. They have a quick wipe down everyday.

caringcarer · 17/10/2025 23:58

Whilst DC are in nappies they need a bath everyday.

Really? How on earth did we survive with only one a week? It was a pain to fill the tin bath from the kettle though so could be the reason.

Well you should be washing your genitals every day, you will stink.
A 4 year old pees and poos out of their genitals and bum so they need to be washed daily. As do you.

😂

Don't be ridiculous.

I'm 39 years old and I don't always shower every day. Sometimes it's every other day. And no, I don't stink.

Totally agree
Also creases should be cleaned and you should check fingers and toes for hair/ threads
Daily bath was part of their winding down routine

Basic hygiene

faffadoodledo · 18/10/2025 19:35

every evening because it was such a nice thing to do.

I also don’t see how you properly clean hands by just wiping. At least a daily bath gives you a chance to do a good job every day.

BabyToothbrush · 18/10/2025 19:37

I think it's fine. We bathed all our babies only weekly unless there was a reason to do it additional times e.g. absolutely filthy from messy play, the beach, swimming, poonami etc. Around the time they turned 3 we started doing twice weekly (although usually one shower and one bath rather than two baths). I felt their hair started getting bit greasy otherwise and also when they were 4+ they started wiping themselves on the toilet and didn't always do the greatest of jobs realistically. Whereas babies you clean them yourself so you know they are clean!

Obviously around baths we wash and wipe their face, necks, hands many times a day, and those in nappies also nappy area, and bums til they were 4ish and learned to do it themselves.

Basic hygiene

Nope. There's nothing about 'basic hygeine' that requires you to scrub at your skin every morning with hot water. Many dermatoligists suggest every other day is better for you.

Who said scrub/ hot water?
Such hyperbole around simple basic hygiene

Small children aren't scrubbed and the water would be warm

Houseoftrouser25 · 18/10/2025 19:49

All the wiping of face, hands, necks, bums and you might as well pop them in the bath.

hereismydog · 18/10/2025 19:52

What are you feeding your 9mo that you are getting away with a weekly bath?! Mine needs a bath almost every day because he really enjoys marinating himself in whatever he’s eaten 🥲 he loves the bath though, it’s a bit of extra playtime for him and then we do story and bed.

Cucy · 18/10/2025 20:08

Yes it’s fine.

I would avoid bathing a >1year old more than once a week as much as possible but obviously sometimes they do need it if they’ve had a very messy nappy or something.

CrispieCake · 18/10/2025 20:10

When mine got too big to go in the bath together, I started bathing them on alternative evenings rather than running two baths a night.

Cucy · 18/10/2025 20:10

Third child, monthly. Whether she needs it or not.

Daily is often too much.
Weekly is fine.
Monthly is way too little.

SueSheeMee · 18/10/2025 20:15

I had a friend who only bathed her young children/babies once a week as they didn't smell and she thought too many baths were bad for their skin.

They did smell, not of anything offensive but just musty and a bit sour. She was clearly nose blind to it

Mine were bathed ever other day unless they needed it more often.

JakeyRolling · 18/10/2025 20:15

We don’t bath at all - we have showers twice a week (plus any additional as needed)
My eldest is autistic and baths excite him too much for them ever to have been part of the bedtime routine and if I ran one for my youngest he’d want one too.

LetsFlyHighAway · 18/10/2025 20:17

Every 3-4 days for baby and every 2-3 at 4 would be my limit. More often if they enjoy it.

comoatoupeira · 18/10/2025 20:17

Once a week club.

We wipe their bums and use a towel mitt to wash them thoroughly after number 2, then those get washed on 90.
