Toddler wetting through nappy every night

ToddlerTornado · 08/10/2025 19:40

DS is 2.5, potty trained in the day and only in a nappy overnight.
Every morning his sleep is being disrupted because he wakes up soaking wet.

For info:
• He always does a wee before bed
• We cut out bedtime milk, but it hasn’t helped
• He wears size 7 Pampers Pull Ups

I’ve been looking into what else I could try, such as:
1. Doubling up on pull ups (but not sure if that would actually stop expansion?)
2. Adding a reusable hemp booster pad into the disposable pull up

Has anyone tried these or found another solution? It’s upsetting him when he wakes and sometimes he can’t get back to sleep.

Any suggestions welcome!

Is it soaking through or leaking?

WhereAreMyKids · 08/10/2025 19:41

Does he go to the toilet x time before bed and then last thing?

Higgledypiggledy864 · 08/10/2025 19:45

Can you put him on the potty for a wee in his sleep before you go to bed? I think it's called a dream wee..

He wees right before going to sleep

he is soaking through , has a huge nappy in the morning & he doesn't drink excessive amounts either

We found these worked when our son was soaking through the largest size nappies in supermarkets. Even the teen pull-ups weren't absorbent enough.

Is he wearing a pull up at night?

From memory with my kids (a long time ago now!) I found that since pull ups are designed for daytime use/toilet training, they aren’t as absorbent as regular nappies.

Maybe try swapping the pull up for a regular nappy at night, and see if that makes any difference…?

FurForksSake · 08/10/2025 19:56

As said above, proper nappy not pull ups and add a reusable booster. What time is he waking up?

I vaguely remember something about this being a bad idea as it trains children to urinate in routine and not listen to their bodily functions.

Dawninglory · 08/10/2025 20:06

I had to get my son to do a wee before he went to bed (7pm) then get him up when I went to bed (11pm) he stayed asleep. Then set my alarm for (3am!!!) for another wee. He stayed asleep, I was tired but I had to as he just couldn't hold it, after 6mths his bladder started to hold it more and it was OK after the 11pm wee, he could last until 6am. Never had night time nappies.

WhereAreMyKids · 08/10/2025 20:07

Personally I'd suggest taking him for a wee a hour before bed, then the bedtime wee last thing. Use a nappy not a pull up and make sure it's the right design for his stature. Some are better for the slim, some are better for the chonks. I had to use separate brands for my DC due to their builds.

Bitzee · 08/10/2025 20:12

What percentile is he on? My guess is that the size 7 nappy is far too big so that’s why it’s leaking. They’re for over 15kg which is probably about a typical weight for a 4 and half year old. I reckon try him in a size 5+ and see how you get on. Also since he is potty trained have him wee before his bath and again afterwards to check for more so he’s definitely going to bed on an empty bladder. And don’t offer any drinks after dinner and if he asks just give him small sips of plain water.

BunnyRuddington · 08/10/2025 20:14

Have you tried a waterproof wrap over the top? My DN was a heavy wetter at night and they ended up using a booster pad and a waterproof wrap to cure the leaking.

Bitzee · 08/10/2025 20:18

Oh and one more thing OP. You say he doesn’t drink loads, that could also be part of the issue. If he drinks a lot during the day it’ll help his overall bladder capacity. So yes limit them right before bed but get him drinking much more earlier on in the day and you might see an improvement.

Also, if he has squash cut that out, especially blackcurrant as it can cause them to wee more at night (don’t ask me why but it’s a thing).

Aimtodobetter · 08/10/2025 20:19

I’ve done a two nappy system at night since my eldest was about 14 months old - one nappy pant and one nappy - still occasional leaks but the two combined reduced it. Also - when I moved from baby grows which did you at the bottom to pyjamas things got better - I think the snap on the baby grows which did was putting pressure on the nappies leading to leaks.

JELr29 · 08/10/2025 20:20

It’s the pampers!!! I hated it when I ran out of my usuals and had to use pampers as they’re the only ones the shop closest to me sells. I always found they smell awful and leak. Try Aldi or any own brand nappies x

Maraudingmarauders · 08/10/2025 20:48

We have this issue (but not toilet trained) - we’ve had some success using pampers premium nappies at night, pull ups during the day, and I do a quick nappy change when we go to bed at 10.30ish which he usually sleeps through/doesn’t wake up fully which means I can get rid of the first few hours of wee (it was even better when I did it at midnight once but I’m not staying up that late every night)

Iguessicoulddothat · 08/10/2025 20:51

Try other brands, ninjamas work well for us, huggies definitely better than pampers too

ToddlerTornado · 08/10/2025 20:59

i need to weigh him but he's average size 50th centile, he's in size 7 because the smaller sizes didn't cover his bum properly.

has anyone tried peachies nappies?

arent ninjamas for older children? It says age 4-7?

I thought pullups and nappies had the same absorbency, the difficulty is he wont lay down to have a nappy put on, hence the pull ups.

You can put a nappy on standing up easily, just takes a minute of practice. Secure one side, do the other and go back to the first to make sure is right.

Size 7 sounds very large, it's been a while but my DC (disabled) was in size 7s at 5 years and he was a chonk.

If the nappy or pull up isn't snug it's going to cause leaks.

Cantseetreesforthewood · 09/10/2025 06:59

Double void just before bed.
So, depending in your routine:
Wee, teeth, wee, lights out or Wee, story, Wee, lights out type arrangement.

Ninjamas age 4-7 are equivalent to size 7s- that’s how big the 7s are. Both would likely be far too big for a ~50th percentile 2 and a half year old. I would try a different brand of 5s to whatever you were using before that didn’t cover his bum because they do all fit a bit different. And of course you can do a taped nappy standing- just takes a bit of practice and that opens up more options to get a good fit.

DaisyChain505 · 09/10/2025 07:16

Wake them up for a dream wee later in the night before you go to bed.

Frostynoman · 09/10/2025 07:53

We tried peaches but they weren’t consistently better than kit and kin (not great). Apparently ours still occasionally leaks through after nap time at nursery in an Asda own nappy. I found when we had the next size up pj bottoms that seemed to help, along with not popping up the vest.

makeachange25 · 09/10/2025 08:14

I had this with my son and I doubled up on nappies. It really helped!

I also bought the specific night time pull ups. And then put a normal nappy over it.

APatternGrammar · 09/10/2025 08:24

With both of mine, I used to change their nappies when I went to bed without waking them up. They always slept through this fine. If I found myself awake at 3 or 4 am I did it again. I don't think it's great to induce them to wee in their sleep as PP have said.
Try a different brand, too. Take recommendations from parents of boys only as, having had one of each, I do think the nappies soak through in different places generally in boys.
I was always cautious about routinely doubling up on nappies as the treatment for hip displasia is a double nappy, albeit at a younger age, so it seems like it could change their posture slightly.
