I'm thinking of getting some 2nd hand size 2 fluffles (poppered) to use as birth to potty nappies. They are a for a friend on a budget, new to cloth with no tumble dryer.

How are they for containment?

TIA

have onyl used the nippa ones, which are ok containment-wise as you can do them up snugly, not sure abotu poppers

and they will look enormous on a newborn though

JDBfangirl · 31/05/2008 12:30

I've only ever used the nippas but they're great on containment and dry pretty quickly. They're huge, esp on smll babies but this is less noticeable as they get older/you get used to them

CarGirl · 31/05/2008 12:32

Hmmm I think I'll recommend she gets them but continue on my hunt for some smaller ones. Are normal tots bots size 1 okay from birth ie 7lbish (we reckon it's going to be a smallish baby)

should be - if you're on a budget size 0s (eg Bimbles) are not an economical buy.

Size 1 Bimbles are a good buy though and dry fatser than totsbots. ALso don't get crispy even if line dried as they;re fleece next to the skin

CarGirl · 31/05/2008 14:08

I've been trying to hunt out Bumbles because I used them successfully from birth (but had large babies) and also size 2 wambamboo because they are more compact then MEOS on a newborn (compared them on baby annabel!)

Someone is selling the fluffles £2.50 each plus post which I think is a bargain?

LazyLinePainterJane · 31/05/2008 14:15

I used Bumbles for DS and switched to Fluffles and have found the Fluffles much better. They are almost dry when out of the machine, they just need to sit for half hour or so, don't even need to go on the line.

They stay fluffier than the Bumbles, but they will look big. As MrsBadger says, Bimbles are not economical (we had some) but they are cute

LazyLinePainterJane · 31/05/2008 14:16

Meant to add, have never had any sort of explosion out of the nappy with Fluffles or Bumbles/Bimbles. And DS poos for England.

CarGirl · 31/05/2008 14:47

Okay I'll suggest she gets them, I'm trying to get her a few different types because IME of 3 in cloth what suits one doesn't always suit the others!

OP posts:
BigBadMouse · 31/05/2008 20:26

Good idea to get her to try lots of types - the fluffles should have a decent resale value if she doesn't get opn with them though I would think- esp at that purchase price .

FWIW I started with fluffles using Size 2 btp on DD aged 5 months but gave up on them after 3 months as they were way too bulky and none of my hand-me-down cloths from disposable reared babies fitted over them (even some of the dungarees!) Other than that they were fab.

CarGirl · 31/05/2008 20:28

the responsibility of helping someone spend their money on nappies - eek it's getting a bit much!

katwith3kittens · 31/05/2008 20:32

I didn't like fluffles at all.

Thankfully I only bought a couple and after deciding very quickly they werent for me I managed to sell on very quickly.

Too man made for me. But I can see the attraction of quick drying if that's what appeals.

I wouldn't buy a full set.. try a few different types and buy whatever suits baby and you best.

tassisssss · 31/05/2008 20:43

I have 2 size ones and I loved them. Looking forwad to using them again very very soon. I love that they're so soft and they dry ridiculously fast.

Heard that they'd been discontinued??

theyoungvisiter · 31/05/2008 20:43

I find fluffles v good although like others, only ever used nippa versions.

They absorb loads and dry very quickly (less than 1/2 hour on a hot radiator).

Downsides: They do feel very synthetic (which some people don't like) and they are very bulky, especially when used as birth to potty. In fact I bought some intending to use them as birth to potty and found them just too enormous, and ended up getting some size 1 bamboo tots bots for the first few months. DS was ready for them from about 4 months onward - before that it was just too comic and none of his clothes fitted. People used to laugh at his silhouette!

CarGirl · 31/05/2008 20:44

Perhaps we should stick with wambamboo size 2 as they are quite small as a btp nappy and only £5 each new delivered - argh!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
theyoungvisiter · 31/05/2008 20:57

solo bamboo is quite hard if you don't have a dryer though. I don't have one, and I don't think I could manage without at least some fluffles to tide me over when I forget to do a wash in time.

I'm not sure if it's the same with wambamboo, but tots bots bamboo aren't supposed to be radiator dried, so without a tumble dryer you are looking at a good 24-48 hours drying time, depending on the weather.

mymblemummy · 31/05/2008 21:04

I think Fluffles (I use both nippa and popper versions) are great. They're super-fast at line drying and retain their softness even in the hardest water areas.

They contain explosive poos too, but so do the other cloth types I use.

They are bulkier but I think the big bottom look is cute, and I really haven't had trouble getting clothes over them. I just take into account that's he's likely to move up a clothes size a bit earlier.

I wish I could get a few more size 1s. Tots Bots are sold out, and you're right, they are discontinued. Tots Bots are bringinging out a new nappy, the FlexiTot, and they said they would have too many on the market if they continued with the Fluffle (which I think is daft).

The FlexiTot was supposed to be out in April but I believe it is still not on sale. It's meant to be a sort of combination Fluffle and Bamboozle, ie fast-drying and slim-fitting.

theyoungvisiter · 31/05/2008 21:08

but mymblemummy are you using size 1 fluffles? Cargirl is talking about using size 2 on a newborn - which is possible but majorly bulky.

I agree that size one on a newborn and size 2 on a 6 monther are both fine, just a bit chubby-bummed!

FrannyandZooey · 31/05/2008 21:09

mymble we've just ordered Fluffles from thenappylady.co.uk
they are running out but still had some stock as of last week

RUMPEL · 31/05/2008 21:11

They are fab - highly recommended!

BigBadMouse · 31/05/2008 21:18

mymblemummy there are still a few places you can pick up fluffles but if you have trouble getting some and want something similar you could try Little Lamb microfibre nappies - they are the closest in fit to the tots. Velcro only though. You could probably pick one up cheaply via ebay to try out.

Definitely agree Size 2 as a btp is HUGE on a newborn, Size 2 was HUGE on my DD2 at 7 months but then she is slim.

Anyone else a bit about the Flexitot?????? I wonder how easy it will be to stop a smell build up in the microfibre core. MF is notorious for holding onto smells and I like to make sure my MF nappies and boosters get a thorough wash and rinse (esp during teething sessions).

mymblemummy · 31/05/2008 21:31

Oh, sorry, yes size 2 on a newborn would be a bit over the top. You could probably swaddle the baby in them.

Thanks for the tips, Franny and BBMouse, I shall go on a Fluffle quest.

The FlexiTot does sound a bit too good to be true, and I've given up hanging on to try them before buying size 2s.

CarGirl · 31/05/2008 21:54

decisions decisions..........I'm just trying to get an economical system and having used wambamboo size 2 I know they would work fine at they're cheap! Although her mum has got a tumble drier.......

OP posts:
BigBadMouse · 31/05/2008 22:26

yep...but they are a very specific fit - not so good for a chunky bottomed baby. I find they well suited to my DD2 who is tall and thin (unlike her parents ) but I know a few others who find them way too thin around the bottom to contain well on an older baby.

Has your friend not got a local nappy project that offers a trial scheme?

I would say size 1 totsbots would be best suited to babies who are 8lb minimum (the fit depends on the nappy type and securing mechanism so check their website). My Size 1 bamboozles are supposed to fit from 8lbs but not sure they will. Should give them a go now he's here I guess. Your friend could bridge the initial gap by using muslin cloths though

onepieceoflollipop · 31/05/2008 22:31

Sorry if someone has mentioned this before. I only have one fluffle, after a few months of use it has really started to smell. None of my other (older nappies) smell at all so I knew it wasn't a problem with my laundering skills.

I asked Flame and it is a common problem with Microfibre/manmade fabrics. I need to try and strip it a few times apparently. (on my "to do" list!

They seem to hold the smell of urine and it has put me off. Prior to the smell issue I loved the Fluffle, for many of the excellend reasons already mentioned.

BigBadMouse · 31/05/2008 22:41

Totally agree lollipop - You really do need to cold rinse them in the machine before every wash to help keep the smell out. All microfibre is the same...hence why I am suspicious of the flexitot core smelliness
