Approaching the birth of baby 3. Always used cloth before and can't this time as will be living with my mother (long story).

I want to get a couple of packs in of newborn size nappies in different brands to try out. What do you recommend and where to get them?

(PS - I did post about this months and months ago and can't find the thread so sorry if you are repeating yourself to me!)

they will send you samples iirc

mylovelymonster · 30/05/2008 20:24

here

Bambo and Moltex. Both great. Moltex a bit wider so we used these for night-time and Bambos for day. Can get free samples from nice people and their prices are very good/best - although haven't checked recently. Free delivery if you spend over £60 (buying in bulk!), I think, or maybe for your first order- check.

nature nappies available in some supermarkets and online
IIRC they fit a bit better on newborns than Moltex
moltex are good for an older child

mylovelymonster · 30/05/2008 20:32

Ah, Nature have a reputation for nappy rash. We had a problem which disappeared after switching to Bambo. Also, edges and tabs very scratchy IME. Can't understand why supermarkets stock these and not Bambo....apart from they're Danish and Nature are UK, I think....

FrannyandZooey · 30/05/2008 20:33

oh that's interesting
I think Nature are Swedish? Swedish 'founder', anyway

IlanaK · 30/05/2008 20:35

Its so hard to know what to get ahead of time. My first ds was a real chunky monkey. My second was really skinny. No way of knowing what this one will be, but i need to order something in ahead of time! We can get Nature Baby in our local Waitrose so maybe will get a pack in of those and also some Bambo to try initially. Then can order more of what works.

Moltex leak, ime.

MarmadukeScarlet · 30/05/2008 21:10

I'm a recent bambo convert

misdee · 30/05/2008 21:13

i bought a pack of nature ones last week, can these go in composter?

because any nappies that go in general household rubbish wont break down will they?

IlanaK · 30/05/2008 21:44

That's an interesting point. I live in a flat in central london so they will have to go in regular rubbish (with poo tipped down loo of course).

Use moltex here, very good, no rash, no leakage. Ran out, so got a pack of Nature from supermarket, gave DS terrible rash, and didn't seem as absorbent over the night.

missbumpy · 30/05/2008 22:06

I've been using Nature baby and LO hasn't had any problems/nappy rash etc. Also much cheaper than Moltex and Bambo and easy to get hold of in supermarkets and Boots.

FrannyandZooey · 30/05/2008 22:48

none of them can go in a composter AFAIK as they don't break down efficiently enough
moltex can go in a wormery

spicemonster · 30/05/2008 22:50

They can biodegrade if you put them in biodegradeable nappy bags and then into same type of bin liners. And you can also get wipes that break down too - I use Jackson Reece ones.

FrannyandZooey · 31/05/2008 08:33

I don't think they can biodegrade once they have been taken away by binmen though and put in landfill - isn't that the problem? no oxygen

spicemonster · 31/05/2008 09:03

Oh yes F&Z, you're probably right

Damn. So is there no point in buying them then? Are they no less evil than plastic?

FrannyandZooey · 31/05/2008 09:11

they are made in a much more environmentally friendly way, from materials which aren't harmful when broken down (in the event they do ever break down!)

better for child's skin to be next to
produced with less waste in mind
packaging is usually more 'green' (although moltex packaging claims to be compostable but isn't IME!)

and you could always get a wormery if brave!

definitely better than a box of pampers, but not really the long term solution...

MehgaLegs · 31/05/2008 09:16

[[http://www.naturebotts.co.uk/ I used Moltex and an now using bambo pull ups.

I used reusables with my other three but discovered moltex when DS3 was almost a year.

We have a wormery but I have to say that when I turned out the compost this year there were still large chunks of nappy that hadn't decomposed from over three years ago. we did use lots of nappies though.

Maybe I need more worms.

MehgaLegs · 31/05/2008 09:18

I used Moltex and an now using bambo pull ups. oops

FrannyandZooey · 31/05/2008 09:19

mega do you find the packaging rots? we can't work out if it's a problem with our compost or with the Moltex bags
they went black and slimy and revolting

MehgaLegs · 31/05/2008 09:31

Ours just sort of dry out, fall apart and go bitty. I only put them in the chicken manure /garden compost bin though as it is dryer than the kitchen waste one. I suspect we would get the slimey black thing going on if I put the packaging in there.

MamaTama · 31/05/2008 09:41

Hi. I've used Nature Babycare nappies for my DS from birth with no problems whatsoever. Very happy with both price & performance (started with newborn & now using size 4.) I've seen all the other brands mentioned in this thread but have never been tempted to change because the NB ones have performed so well. I'm a 1st time mum & must admit there were a few leaks at the very start but TBH I reckon that was more to do with me being a novice nappy changer & half asleep most of the time!
Never ever had issues with nappy rash & I don't generally put cream or oil on his bottom/boy bits at all (except if he's just had a massage.) I use the NB wipes now but for the 1st 3 months or so it was strictly water & cotton wool. Maybe the choice of cleaning stuff also affects the chance of rashes developing?
Wondering also if it's different for girl babies &/or those fed on formula (because the wee gathers in a different part of the nappy & maybe FF LOs wee ids more acidic - I don't know, just a thought)...
Good luck!

puffylovett · 31/05/2008 09:45

HI there, we're nature babies over here. I do find that sometimes DS gets a little bit of a rash with them, but I still prefer them over and above Huggies etc.

I did notice when mooching round Asda the other day (I know I know, I normally am a waitrose lass but the credit crunch and all that !!! ) that they have started doing an own brand eco disposable.

Does anyone have any experience with them ? they are a couple of pounds cheaper than nature babies and appear to be plant based and 60% biodegradeable same as the Nature babies ?
