School uniform for overweight 5 year old

Camelia22 · 07/08/2025 09:42

I am new on here and know this is Mumsnet, but I need urgent advice for my overweight grandson.
He is obese and I cannot get school trousers to fit him (he is nearly 5) . I would like to get elasticated trousers in bigger sizes. Have tried Marks but they do not fit.
Does anyone know what would happen if I cannot get a uniform to fit when he starts school (I would have to send him in, in black joggers), or anywhere that I could get advice now it is the school holidays.
Any help appreciated

Yes you have. Bullying of/by 5 year olds for whatever reason simply didn’t happen when our children were that age at school. 25 years on, with a 5 year old grandchild, it still doesn’t.

It really does happen. Kids say cruel things 🤷‍♀️

Didn’t work with ours who was very tall and extremely skinny. The bigger the size, the wider the legs and they just flapped about 😁

I dont think that is the OPs issue though? For your DS ie tall and skinny you dont need to hem anyway !

Yes, you can Google - but recommendations are often so much better.

And that cruel child will be dealt with sympathetically by teachers who will talk to them about bullying and unkind words and how impactful they are. They will tell that child that THEY need to change, not the overweight child.

this is what normal people do and expect.

Basically whoever gets in first with the reporting will get the post they don’t like deleted

Fair enough.

Sorry if that’s been your experience. Not been ours.
If it does happen at that age I would expect the school to come down on the parents pretty hard, that’s where the “bully’s” attitudes will have come from.

Ok, thanks for that. I didn’t know that. I assumed (often a mistake) that MN deleted offensive posts. It does explain something that happened a few months ago…
it was a thread about racism. I tried pointing out that cultural differences can present problems, that xenophobia and racism are sometimes confused imo and I also pointed out - a simplistic comment I thought - that nasty individuals shouldn’t be protected just because they are in a minority group.
EVERY one of my posts was deleted. I thought MN were bring OTT.
I am grateful that you pointed this out. Perhaps I was being naive or just thick? lol

Yes I’m a parent, 2 ND, 2NT. All slim. You need to grow up and think before you post bullshit.

Just because your experience with nd children is different to others does not mean other children suffer? Me grow up? I am defending these young innocent children AND parents who are being tarnished by people such as yourself because you cannot be arsed to do a bit of research.
Okay say you're correct and nd children 'don't struggle with obesity', children with autoimmune diseases do. Do yourself a favour and research hashimotos. A very common disease but unfortunately not recognised enough in the UK.
But of course, I'm posting bullshit.

Don’t worry too much BunnyBloom17. I think this particular poster is purposely being provocative and goady. She has posted a few shitty, judgy posts.

Because one can get lost checking out a dozen places and not knowing which ones might be best. Asking here, you get a variety of answers, but if the same name brand/store keeps being mentioned, it's worth looking into.

And this is why we still have problems with children bullying. Why do you think it's okay to comment on a child's weight? Your comment is not helpful to OP, so if you have no advice or support don't comment?? It's only abuse if the parent/guardian is feeding said child 'crap', but you wouldn't know that, the child in question could have underlying conditions affecting their weight. Regardless, it's not for you to comment on. Innocent children!! Just imagine how you'd feel if the table was flipped..

LittleMermaidRose · 10/08/2025 18:48

I don't have anything helpful to add but I just wanted to say that you sound like such a lovely gran x

Slightly off tangent, but my 5yo got some child BMI thing done at school saying he was obese, yet he fits in school trousers just fine. Just an age year up as he's tall. Just goes to show what a load of hogwash BMI is. Can you get a tailor to alter a pair?

You do know that height is factored into the calculation? It’s not hogwash at all. It doesn’t work for a small group of people, like athletes.

springtimemagic · 10/08/2025 19:37

BunnyBloom17 · 08/08/2025 18:24

And what if the children question is neurodivergent?? More common for neurodivergent children to be overweight. Not always down to 'piss poor parenting'

Come on. At age 5, that’s irrelevant. Kids what they’re given by caregivers.

ilovemyhamster · 10/08/2025 19:57

I have no trouser advice not already covered but you sound lovely. I just wanted to say that ☺️

It's really not irrelevant tho is it? What is irrelevant is your negativity towards the whole matter. People need to wake up and realise that 'obesity' isn't just a matter of neglect anymore. REAL ISSUES cause it aswell. You don't know the whole situation, just that the child op is referring is chunkier than average. That doesn't give anyone the go ahead to start shaming the parents. Also aren't we literally in the 21st century? Why are we still commenting on people's appearances, especially children's. Let them be the innocent children they're meant to be, the worlds already fucked up enough without 5y/os having to worry about what fully grown adults think of their body

Not true. MN delete posts they deem inappropriate, they leave them up if they feel they don’t break their rules.
