Struggling with grocery shopping

Hi all, I’m finding it really difficult grocery shopping using my stroller. I carry a basket using the crook of my arm and put items under the stroller. A security guard was following me around till I paid. I’m assuming he thought I was going to steal something as I was putting items under the stroller. Also the stroller tips back when I hang the bags on the handles so I carry them on my wrists and push the stroller. Does anyone else struggle with this and any tips? Thank you.

Home delivery, you can get cheaper slots depending on the time of day or scan as you go, with toddler in the trolley seat

CrownCoats · 28/07/2025 19:18

Home delivery. Is your daughter’s father not on the scene? Can’t he look after her while you go shopping?

Chocolatehorse · 28/07/2025 19:19

Can you use scan as you shop? I put things straight in the buggy doing that and never had problems with security.
i think you can also get groceries delivered from Amazon which is free if you’re already a prime member.

Online shopping makes me stick to my shopping list - I spend far more when I go in store - it’s week worth the £5.99 delivery charge per month

if you want to get out and about there a far more fun places to go then the supermarket

HelloCheekyCat · 28/07/2025 19:19

If you have an Iceland i. think they still.do home delivery but you can go.in and choose it all, pay and then they deliver later.
I don't get home deliveries because we don't spend enough to make it worthwhile but I do have a car.
When DD was a baby I just went more frequently to d smaller shops, I also had decent sized pushchair with a big basket underneath so I didn't have to hang shopping off the handles

I like going to the shops, even though it’s madness with DS.
We shop little & often, we live centrally. And we have a big pram!

Edited

Yes my buggy is quite big, I would really find it useful for some sort of big bag that attaches to the stroller? So I can get potatoes and laundry detergent at the same time haha. I’m going to google it and see if there’s anything. Thank you.

Scan as you shop and pack straight into a shopping bag. Also accepting that it's only possible to do small shops with the pram which could mean multiple trips during the week.

We do home delivery now and get a big shop delivered once a week so I only need to go myself for any top ups.

Haha! I know a lot of people are saying home delivery but I actually like going out and about? Anyone else?

I think most people like going out and about!

Get home delivery for the bulk of your stuff then you can go here and there at your leisure for say fresh bread or fruit and veg. Managing a buggy and shopping basket is easy if you're not buying too much - we've all done it!

I don't know anyone, unless they live the back of beyond, who doesn't use a supermarket home delivery service.

Bearinthesmallmessyflat · 28/07/2025 19:26

I hate home delivery. Our local supermarkets seem to be terrible at it.

In the supermarket either let dc walk (reins and a toy basket help if you’re doing this) or stick them in a sling or carrier and put the shopping in the seat of the pram.

Put the heaviest bits in a backpack and the basket of the pram to carry home and do several smaller shops rather than one big shop.

mrsh2025 · 28/07/2025 19:27

when I had the pram I’d leave the pram by security and pop little one in the trolley even if only a few bits or perhaps if it’s something you do regularly why not try a wagon cart, I got mine for £10 (little tikes) on Facebook

RoosterPotato · 28/07/2025 19:27

You can go out and about without it being a shop! Buy an Ocado pass

Yes. Home delivery.

Balance basket on top of buggy when shopping.
Put underneath to lug home. Does that work?
I used to have to go a few times a week

seven201 · 28/07/2025 19:59

I have a nearly 2 year old and she hates being in the trolley so the shopping experience is horrendous for me and everyone around. I definitely prefer delivery but absolutely love going on my own as it’s so rare!

you mention not driving - did you say that to explain why it’s always the buggy? You could abandon your buggy out of the way near the checkouts and use a trolley for while going round. That’s if you 2 year old would like the trolley.

You could potentially get two carabiner style clips for your buggy handle to hang the basket off while you go round. But do be careful with the tipping.

mindutopia · 28/07/2025 22:04

At 2, my dc went in the trolley. If you need to walk to the shop, toddler in a wrap or carrier. I always had mine in a wrap to shop until 2 ish and they could sit independently in the trolley. Or I left them at home with Dh. Or home delivery. I have Tesco delivery saver and can get as many deliveries as I need. It’s £6.99 a month and I get 1-2 deliveries a week so £1 ish per delivery.

FrostiesAreCornflakesForPeopleWhoCantFaceReality · 28/07/2025 22:12

I use the self scan and add stuff to either the basket under the pram or big shopping bags and always print my receipt just in case of any misunderstandings. Never had any issues and as far as I know I’ve never been followed around the shop by anyone. That’s just for top up shops. I don’t think I could do a full weekly shop for all of us with only the pram.

justasking111 · 28/07/2025 22:18

One friend family four has a delivery once a month of all the heavy non perishable stuff and freezer stuff. Another family of five has a delivery once a fortnight.

I'm going into hospital next month, then can't drive for six weeks I'm going to organise something for us.

TeddyRocknRoll123 · 29/07/2025 00:45

I live in an area I can't get supermarket delivery. I put baby in the shopping cart, they have spaces for toddlers at the top. You can buy a cover for hygiene as well. Then I wheel the cart with all the groceries to the car.

nickiiee · 28/07/2025 19:07

Hey, my daughter is 2. And I never have enough space for anything? How do you carry it back?

Big rucksack plus buggy basket

OopsieeDaisy · 29/07/2025 14:52

Another vote for home delivery here, it’s been a game changer for us and now I don’t know why I put myself through the struggle of the food shop with two small children for so long! Save that time to go out to somewhere more exciting!
