When did your pre pregnancy clothes fit you after birth?

I ordered myself a pair of jeans (size 14) when I was still pregnant thinking that they would fit me after baby, but they are so tight and do not do up at all. They look huge and I cannot believe they do not fit me! I did only give birth just over 2 weeks ago but when I look in the mirror I don’t actually feel much bigger than when I was pre pregnancy so confused as to why they don’t fit.

This is baby number 2 so not sure if it takes longer to bounce back, but just wanted to ask others how long did it take you to get back into your pre pregnancy clothes?

It's been 5 years and I'm still working on it. Sorry if that's not what you were hoping to hear. Fwiw 2 weeks pp is very very early in terms of recovery. Congratulations on your baby Flowers

CommissarySushi · 28/07/2025 06:23

2 weeks pp is really early! I wouldn't expect most women to be back in their pre-pregnancy clothes at that point.

I wore my pre-pregnancy jeans out of the hospital but I'm really tall and had a small baby so I didn't have much bump in the first place.

I’m sure I still looked about 6 months pregnant at 2 weeks so it’s really early days. I never fit jeans and other tight clothes again after my first (and am now pregnant with my second). I didn’t even put on any weight as I had gestational diabetes, it just seemed to be in different places.

2 weeks, I think, and then a month later they were all too big for me. But I only put on 10lb in pregnancy and 8 of those were baby.

(A baby who never slept, so i think I'd have happily hung on to a few lbs in exchange for that!)

Bitzee · 28/07/2025 06:55

It’s going to take 6 weeks for your uterus to fully contract so anything less than that is pretty unrealistic if it’s very fitted around middle! But that was about it for me, some stuff by week 2 and then by the 6 weeks everything fit.

Lucy211 · 28/07/2025 06:59

Maybe 3 months for me? But this is my first child.

Hodgemollar · 28/07/2025 07:00

They fit me after a few weeks but I had a c section and things like jeans were uncomfortable on my incision for a few weeks more.

I breastfed, and mine had shrunk back after 10 days.

I didn't put much weight on when I was pregnant as I felt full after only eating a small amount. It felt like my pregnancy took up some of my stomach space. I was back in my pre-pregnancy jeans when DD was three weeks old (sorry).

Planktonplank · 28/07/2025 08:22

3 weeks after DS, 3 months after DD. I'm wider now than I was pre babies, ended up selling a load of dresses as I couldn't do them up over my ribcage. Bodies are crazy.

Toutestbienquifinitbien · 28/07/2025 08:31

Much longer with my second baby than my first, which seems to be common.

With my first I was back in all of my pre pregnancy clothes within 3 weeks. With my second it was about 3 months.

Loveduppenguin · 28/07/2025 08:52

I walked out of the hospital in size 8 leggings…but…I only put on a stone exactly and 7lb of that was dd, the rest was water I imagine

MauraLabingi · 28/07/2025 09:09

For non stretchy clothes, about 6 weeks I think. But I have fibroids and my uterus maybe took a bit longer than average to tuck itself back into the right place? Don't know 🤷

I'm assuming since you're asking this that you weigh the same as pre-pregnancy, and the issue is not additional weight. But even so your body composition could have changed, less muscle and more fat. Or your hips and ribcage could be wider (they may or may not go back to how they were before).

mindutopia · 28/07/2025 09:34

Christ, not at 2 weeks. 😂 I lived in leggings and maternity/breastfeeding tops and dresses for probably 9/10 months, so I would say 10 months ish.

Daffodil21 · 28/07/2025 09:38

Nearly 4 years and still waiting/trying.

I had to take prednisolone during pregnancy which obviously did not help.

Absolutely aghast and amazed (and slightly jealous!) at all the time frames above!

forthistimeonly · 28/07/2025 09:41

12 weeks first time but I put on weight with my daughter on my thighs as well as belly.
6 weeks second time with my son when I only really put on weight on my belly.

FinallyMovingHouse · 28/07/2025 09:51

My 'looser' clothes fitted around the middle/boobs after about 2 months. My tighter clothes fitted once I'd stopped BF, which was many months later. Having said that, nothing ever looked quite the same, but you just get used to that! It should also be said that I lost all the baby weight after each DC (3 of them) so it wasn't just excess weight...excess skin/different shape instead. Don't be hard on yourself and especially at 2 week PP! x

BlondieMuver · 28/07/2025 09:56

I've had 6 babies.
With some of them I could get into my jeans in 2 weeks, others a couple of months.
Depending on how much weight I gained and active I was during the pregnancy.

Gettingbysomehow · 28/07/2025 09:58

6 months. I had to lose 4 stone. It was an effort for sure.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 28/07/2025 09:58

I was my old dress size around 5 months both times, but where I carried weight changed so many fitted pre-baby clothes didn’t look right.

Bramblecrumb · 28/07/2025 09:59

About a month for me. Breastfeeding didn't seem to make a huge difference to speed.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 28/07/2025 10:00

Oh and seriously OP, most women are in maternity clothes until after their 6 week check.

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 28/07/2025 10:01

About 8-9 months pp when my babies started eating solids properly, my periods resumed and the last half stone fell off overnight. My body clearly just requires a certain minimum weight to ebf babies, and who am I to argue with it?

SJM1988 · 28/07/2025 10:07

I'm nearly 3.5 years post last baby and I'm still not back to my pre pregnancy size. Although I haven't really tried until the last 12 months.
Post 35 years and third baby seems to make it really hard to get back to pre pregnancy size/weight. My shape has also completely changed so I don't think some things I had pre pregnancy will ever fit right again even if I got to the same weight.

Everyone is different and even after every baby you are different so don't judge yourself against others or against your other post baby body. My ribs and hips are wider this time. My bra back size is so much bigger than at the same weight after my first. I don't think my hips will ever go below a 14 now....which is taking me some adjustment to get use to.

Bananachimp · 28/07/2025 10:09

Honestly, stop worrying about pre pregnancy clothes. Buy what fits and wear what you feel comfortable in. I don't think I'm any bigger than I was pre pregnancy but I am a different shape now and clothes for differently.

MiddlingMarch · 28/07/2025 10:19

Never. My hips and rib cage are much wider than before I got pregnant. My feet are half a size bigger.

It took longer than it should have for me to realise that it doesn't actually matter. Bouncing back is a tabloid/media connection that basically shames women into feeling dissatisfied with their bodies. The bodies that grew another human. That shifted and rearranged itself to grow that human.

Give yourself a break. First of all, you have a brand new baby that is utterly dependent on you, that takes a lot of time and energy. Secondly, your uterus is still much bigger than before pregnancy and takes time to contract.

Women gain weight during pregnancy. Its not just "water" and baby, there is increased blood flowing around your body, extra weight is needed to keep you and the baby alive. Weight may not "fall off" to let you "bounce back" because your body is storing energy.

It is ok to look like you've just had a baby.

Wear the maternity jeans.
