Potty training - is he too young?

We’ve started today! My son is 22 months old and has been showing signs of being ready for a few weeks. We bought the potty about 5 weeks ago just for him to see it around etc but…

It’s not going well.

ok - so it’s been 4 hours so I might be a little preemptive saying that but so far we’ve had numerous accidents and not once on the potty. Is he just too young? Am I pushing this too early?

FYI - his communication is great. He can say wee/poo/potty - “mumma poo” etc so I don’t think that’s the issue. I think he’s intellectually ready I am just sure if he is emotionally ready?

Or am I giving up before we’ve even given it a real chance?

I followed the oh crap method with my 25 month old and the first day was terrible, very upset at wees on the floor and she was holding it in.
The next day was better as in as she started to wee I could move her to the potty without upset, by day 5 we had successful short outings in trousers no pants, by day 7 pants and trousers and not had any accidents since out and about or at home. Only at nursery when distracted in their garden and quite a way to the toilets but getting better, had some weeks accident free.

So in my limited experience the first few days were hard, I was just watching ready to spot signs of a wee and move to potty while saying wees go in the potty, a high five/celebration dance if any amount went in, if it didn't I'd say next time we'll get all the wee on the potty. Towards the end of the week is when I'd prompt after meals, before outings etc, by saying it's time to sit on the potty now

Following with interest. DD2 is 20 months, we have the potty in the bathroom and she's done some wees before her bath and last night a poo.

She is communicating when she has been so thinking I might try potty training in a few weeks although it does feel young.

DD1 was 2.5 and barely had any accidents after she was trained. I did try when she was younger but no success x

In case anyone is still following we’re attempting this again as from today. However, he’s just turned two (two weeks ago) and seems a lot more capable.

I’ve also made sure I’m ready and more informed this time! After your recommendations I’m using the “oh crap” method. So far one poo in the potty and one wee on the floor. But it’s been about two hours so I’ll take that!

Mine is 17 months and we are doing lazy potty training (every morning on wake up I put toddler on the potty and read them a story and encourage them to wee). Toddler wees in the potty about half the days, but we can't get any further yet because they can't say the words to tell me they want to go (but they understand wee etc) and can pull their clothes up but not down!

Oh I’ve not heard of that method! I have to say the good thing about the “oh crap” method is that Miss Rachel essentially does the same thing! So he keeps watching the potty training video with Bean and it’s the same way we’re doing it.

He woke up from his nap to a dry nappy and did a wee in the potty 🙌🏻 So it’s going well!

It's not so much a method as what the health visitor suggested at the 12 month check up. I think the idea is that they find using a potty or toilet normal before you take away the nappies. I know some other mums pop even their six month olds on the potty before each meal or before a bath.
