Is this a tonight emergency or can it wait to tomorrow?

A bit of background, 4 Yr old came home last Sunday from dad's, gunky knee, cleaned, washed and dressed. Monday it popped, went to MIU confirmed he had something stuck in it. They used Duoderm and told us to come back Thursday. Forward to Thursday, they have confirmed everything is out and it should all scab over and be fine etc. However since Friday morning, these spots have started to appear. Some blister like, some puss filled. Its gotten warm over the last 24hr also. He complains it stings, I've been cleaning with a warm flannel etc. Hes currently sound asleep for the first time in days, so don't wanna disturb if I dont have to. The green line is so I can monitor whether its spreading also. The other imagine is thursday evening after the dressing came off.

Looks a bit like the early stages of molluscum contagiosum

That was my first thought, but Google doesn't mention soreness; just itching.

Sugarplumfairy34 · 20/07/2025 10:16

Thank you all! :) - we're just waiting to be seen. Its quite busy.

Looks a bit like the early stages of molluscum contagiosum

Not completely impossible. My ds got this on the front of his knee - a dermatologist mistook the first, atypical spot for a callus (it had grown quite big and was quite hard), scraped it off and the fluid that leaked out (proving it was not a callus at all…) then infected a wider area, resulting in lots of more typical-looking molluscum spots that were a complete nightmare for the next 18 months, because being on the front of the knee, they had a tendency to come inflamed from the pressure of kneeling on them, then bursting and spreading the infection.

Ibelievetheworldisburningtotheground · 20/07/2025 10:38

Hope he's seen soon; definitely looks like an infection that will continue to spread if left untreated.

Christwosheds · 20/07/2025 10:38

That does look nasty OP, a spreading infection. Hope you get seen quickly.

Sugarplumfairy34 · 20/07/2025 10:46

So there was confusion, 111 said they had booked an appointment but it wasn't showing. So we've been triaged, they've confirmed it doesn't look right and now awaiting to be seen by someone!

HollyhockDays · 20/07/2025 10:46

That’s terrible looking. Definitely not a reaction to a plaster!

abs12 · 20/07/2025 10:50

Awww hope he's okay. Waiting to hear!

PeapodMcgee · 20/07/2025 10:52

Staph or other skin infection I reckon = antibiotics. Had similar after a tattoo but it cleared by itself. Hope you're seen soon.

okydokethen · 20/07/2025 10:55

I’m glad you’re being seen, it’s looks like an awful spread from the initial photo! Ouch

Funnywonder · 20/07/2025 11:00

Sounds like you did the right thing in taking him to be checked over. Hope he gets sorted soon, wee soul.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/07/2025 11:01

Ouch, that looks nasty. Poor wee thing. hopefully you will get sorted soon.,

(Suggesting it’s “neglect” and access to relatives is reviewed sounds bonkers to me though.)

Laiste · 20/07/2025 11:06

Sunshineismyfavourite · 20/07/2025 11:10

I have no idea what it could be but wanted to say I hope your little boy feels better and that you are seen quickly x

MissMoneyFairy · 20/07/2025 11:12

Sugarplumfairy34 · 20/07/2025 09:58

There was no neglect here! He saw his nan for all off half hour, who probably didn't even notice he had the wound. She has since been incredibly helpful, hence why it hasnt been seen sooner because she was providing advice on care etc. His dad is slapdash but also not neglectful. He mentioned it as soon as he bought them back and I acted appropriately. My 4 year old also wouldn't let it be touched, so I can only assume and feel I'm right that dad also wanted me to deal with it. Not a post for deciding what you deem is neglect, we're currently waiting to be seen. Hes in good spirits amidst the discomfort.

Don't fret, we can't all be perfect, hope it clears up soon.

Fraggeek · 20/07/2025 11:17

Definitely looks like a staph infection. Hopefully they'll sort antibiotics and send you home x

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/07/2025 11:21

NuffSaidSam · 20/07/2025 00:08

I'd call 111 and see what they say. They can maybe pass the photos to someone qualified to have a look at/give you an appointment for tomorrow.

This.
Infections aren’t always accompanied by an high temp (hypo dynamic septic shock). Seek professional advice. People here are unlikely to know. Better safe than sorry.
Hope it improves soon.

Hoppinggreen · 20/07/2025 11:21

I thought Molloscum. DD started with a large one like the one in the middle but then it spread a bit.
You are in the right place anyway OP and hopefully your DS will be sorted soon

kkneat · 20/07/2025 11:27

I’m allergic (or my skin is) to the glue in sticking plasters and a lot of dressings and my skin comes up like that lots of blisters & itchy, 3 of my children also have it. Can only use one type of dressing

abathofmilkwithladydi · 20/07/2025 11:28

I think molluscum too. Both my kids have had it and presents just like that.

abathofmilkwithladydi · 20/07/2025 11:29

Btw if it is molluscum, it can last for years. My youngest had had spots over his tummy for over a year and my eldest had them on the back of his legs for nearly 3 years. Horrible things. There's a silver nitrate treatment on amazon you can buy but it stings like buggery (but it works!)

Sugarplumfairy34 · 20/07/2025 11:30

Hello, we are currently being seen. They have confirmed a skin infection, are giving him antibiotics and we've got a plan in place incase it gets worse, he gets a temp etc. They are currently discussing whether to cover it because he's little and runs the risk of touching and spreading it. Thank you everyone.

Looks painful. Hope he is ok OP.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/07/2025 11:31

Good to hear your update. All the best to him.
