Is this a tonight emergency or can it wait to tomorrow?

A bit of background, 4 Yr old came home last Sunday from dad's, gunky knee, cleaned, washed and dressed. Monday it popped, went to MIU confirmed he had something stuck in it. They used Duoderm and told us to come back Thursday. Forward to Thursday, they have confirmed everything is out and it should all scab over and be fine etc. However since Friday morning, these spots have started to appear. Some blister like, some puss filled. Its gotten warm over the last 24hr also. He complains it stings, I've been cleaning with a warm flannel etc. Hes currently sound asleep for the first time in days, so don't wanna disturb if I dont have to. The green line is so I can monitor whether its spreading also. The other imagine is thursday evening after the dressing came off.

I think that looks like a Staph infection. Good that you’re being seen today

carmak · 20/07/2025 09:20

Those pictures are far worse than I imagined OP. Glad he's being seen.

That's shocking. When you say nurse, do you mean a fully qualified SRN equivalent one? Sorry to ask but so many HCAs call themselves nurses nowadays.

It sounds as though his father and gran were neglectful and I'd reconsider how contact takes place.

What am I reading here.
Firstly SRN nurses haven't been a thing for many years, secondly many HCAs are absolutely amazing at their jobs.
Most importantly, any wound can infected, whoever cleans it. To talk about denying contact over this is awful.

Natsku · 20/07/2025 09:37

Those spots look so sore! I get allergic reactions to adhesive dressings but nothing like that, looks more like an infection to me. Hopefully will all get sorted now you've got an appointment.

Sera1989 · 20/07/2025 09:43

Glad you are taking him to be seen. I think you did the right thing - it wasn’t spreading in the night and he didn’t have a temperature so not an emergency, but definitely should be seen urgently which he will soon. Looks very sore, hope he feels better soon with (I’m guessing) antibiotics

I think you missed the word "equivalent".
You have also missed the fact that a fully qualified nurse didn't clean the wound - at all.

Your comprehension skills are somewhat lacking.

I agree with @LancashireButterPie that your post was over the top. To suggest reviewing contact over a wound that was cleaned and dressed is ridiculous.

FirstofhisName · 20/07/2025 09:50

Impetigo possibly? It can cause blisters, bacteria spread under the skin from the initial cut.

I disagree. I regard that as neglect and anyone who doesn't must have incredibly low standards. If my mother hadn't bothered to clean a graze when the dc were 4, the children wouldn't have stayed again - my mother and MIL aren't nurses and know better than to not bother to clean a wound/graze.

The wound is over a week old now and has clearly got worse it's not up to the Op to suddenly reconsider contact .

Sugarplumfairy34 · 20/07/2025 09:58

There was no neglect here! He saw his nan for all off half hour, who probably didn't even notice he had the wound. She has since been incredibly helpful, hence why it hasnt been seen sooner because she was providing advice on care etc. His dad is slapdash but also not neglectful. He mentioned it as soon as he bought them back and I acted appropriately. My 4 year old also wouldn't let it be touched, so I can only assume and feel I'm right that dad also wanted me to deal with it. Not a post for deciding what you deem is neglect, we're currently waiting to be seen. Hes in good spirits amidst the discomfort.

Looks a bit like the early stages of molluscum contagiosum

Brokenforsummer · 20/07/2025 10:00

What did they say?

My non medically educated guess would be herpes virus into the wound and it’s cold sores.

Redburnett · 20/07/2025 10:02

Could be impetigo, which would likely need antibiotics to clear it.

To suggest the father is neglectful and contact should be restricted over a cut knee is dreadful. I usually carry med wipes with me but if I don't have one the cut has to wait til I get home. The DS was going home and his mam cleaned and dressed it, there obviously was no issue with this as OP didn't make anything of having to do this.

OP I hope all is okay with your son.

Take no notice of RosesAndhellebores …am convinced this poster is on a personal mission to destroy the reputations of any HCP. The hate is real!!

I was going to say the same thing and also to not feel the need to defend DS dad. To suggest either were neglectful is just batshit.

Which would be a rediculous overreaction 🙄

I was about to say the same! Never misses an opportunity to have a dig at the medical profession.

OP, I hope your boy is feeling better and the wound is healing.

RosesAndHellebores · 20/07/2025 10:16

I stand corrected but was responding to the op's point that the wound hadn't been cleaned and I hadn't realised he was about to go home at that point.

I hope the lad is OK and feeling better soon.
