MIL fed my children ice cream for dinner

My MIL offers to collect DC 1 day a week from school then proceeds to feed him ice cream for tea. I am grateful for the childcare. But ungrateful for the unhealthy tea. I know she feeds DN a wholesome meal once a week whilst in her care. And leaves my kitchen in a state

Can she adopt me?

SaintGermain · 16/07/2025 19:26

Is this what she has told you or what the child has told you?

Abracadabra12345 · 16/07/2025 19:26

That’s one cool nan.. There’s got to be some payoffs

Did you call the police ?

Yes, it should be logged in case of repeat behaviour 😬

Meadowfinch · 16/07/2025 19:30

How can she leave your kitchen in a state?

That must involve one bowl, one scoop, one spoon. Maybe a cup of water.

If you don't like it, either leave a plated meal ready for her to take from the fridge or look after your child yourself

Coconutter24 · 16/07/2025 19:32

Why don’t you leave a meal in the fridge to heat up and ask her to use that if the ice cream is such a problem. I mean you could stop the childcare and pay someone else to do it if your not happy with it

cinnamongirl123 · 16/07/2025 19:35

What is a DN?

cinnamongirl123 · 16/07/2025 19:35

It has been very hot recently

DoYouReally · 16/07/2025 19:53

Only once a week + free childcare + happy child = winning!

I think you are overreacting.

Bababear987 · 16/07/2025 19:53

I took my 18m old for ice cream at 430pm so he then didnt eat much except snacks for dinner and guess what happened..... nothing we just enjoyed our time together :)

Sounds fabulous. Today for dinner me & my kids are having chocolate frostys ( ice cream/milkshake) with fries for dipping.

This can't be true. Seriously?

And yet your husband her son survived infancy.

Why not that sounds so fun?

WellyBellyBoo · 16/07/2025 19:56

Did she think ice cream was a meal or did she just assume she only needed to provide a snack? Ice cream once or twice a week sounds perfectly normal to me. You're lucky to have a MIL who does childcare.

Why are these posts always about mothers-in-law!?

Look after them yourself if it’s not to your standards.

Are you a MIL by any chance? I don’t think ice cream for dinner would be anyone’s standard.

TheChosenTwo · 16/07/2025 19:58

I’d not like this if it was just ice cream and then they were in bed before I got home to give the dc proper ‘food’. Sugar wears off quickly and leaves you still hungry. Pretty miserable way to go to bed if that’s what’s happened.
But if you were back before they went to bed I’d have provided something more sustainable.
Easiest way around it is to leave a meal prepared in the fridge and ask her to heat it up. Job done.

JuniperJuly · 16/07/2025 20:02

Disclaimer - Ive just had a tub of ice cream for tea so maybe Im not the right person to comment. I do feel a bit sick now though!

My mil looked after our 2 once a week. She needed to do them tea but she wasnt there to cook for them, so we provided a tin of spaghetti hoops and a mini frozen pizza. 10mins, minimum effort and almost guaranteed to be eaten. MIL didnt approve (I think she thought we fed them that all the time!) but one day a week of crap isn't a disaster. They looked forward to pizza and hoops at nanas!

Maybe give her some fruit to have with the ice cream?

NoDuckyDucksGiven · 16/07/2025 20:02

I honestly wouldn't be worried about that.

Special 'ice cream tea' with Grandma one day a week is the sort of memory that many children grow up to really cherish, and it's really not enough sugar to make any difference.

okydokethen · 16/07/2025 20:09

She’ll be the favourite grandma!
Id give them some toast and an apple and not stress.

Ohhhthedrama · 16/07/2025 20:09

@Pollqueen- 100% true. It's a summer holiday tradition for us. Have frostys and fries and stay at the beach until the sun goes down.

lizzielizard · 16/07/2025 20:14

She sounds like a fun granny. Stop being ridiculous and for goodness sake don't say anything to her as you might lose a great asset to you and your child's life

pizzaHeart · 16/07/2025 20:16

If it happened only once I would ask her why she did it in a polite nonjudgmental way. Maybe she didn’t feel well and it affected her judgement, maybe she thought that’s it’s very hot and it might help . Ask her and then think how to avoid this happening again.
