Portuguese speaker here! DD is 16months and is learning 3 languages, Portuguese, Turkish (DH's language)& English. We adopted the method of one parent, one language (a bit difficult for us sometimes - we speak English between us) English was introduced in the nursery at 6 months. It seems to be working well, it has not delayed her speech at all. She does understand either language, but most words learned seem to be Portuguese. We do talk a lot to her, describing what we are doing or what is going on. We give her time to "talk" and respond to her babbling, as if we are having a two way conversation. We also read a lot, she loves books. If we read to her in English, we always name the pictures in our language. Her favourite at the moment is a portuguese book, written in rhyme & quite long. Not a baby book but she loves it. I have found a book with traditinal portuguese children songs and games, it brought back a lot of memories as a child, and I am brain washing her with it! I think Portuguese is difficul to learn, there are a lot of sounds that, unless she learns them now, she will never get them right, so I try to be consistent.

Sorry to go on a bit but I hope it helps.

Another portuguese speaker here.
I've been only speaking portuguese to my DD since she was born. She is doing pretty well and understands everything. She speaks half and half, but is becoming aware that they are too languages and is starting to sort them out.
I have to say that her vocabulary increased a lot when we spend a couple of weeks back home, so I'll try to do every now and then to keep her portuguese up to snuff!

Do any of you have a DS with a name that works in portuguese and english? I am desperate for one!

Well, I speak Potugues but not too fluently. DH is Brazilian and speaks only Portugues to DS, I speak only English to him and he is now bilingual (well trilingual actually because we live in Italy and he goes to Italian school) We have books and videos sent out to us from Brazil and really DS learn Portugues the same way as he learnt English, he grew up with the language.

Hi girls, I'm the opposite: I live in Portugal but I'm English, dh is Portuguese, my kids are totally bilingual: I speak nothing but English to them but they are in Portuguese schools. When they were very little I used to play them tapes of English stories and songs to keep up their English vocab!

This won't be a book to teach you portuguese... but if you can put your hans on a "dicionario da monica" you might have fun with your kid... is designed to teach brasilian kids enlish, but it works the other way around too, since everyting is labelled in both languages...

Ola ! my husband and i are portuguese but have been in the uk for nearly 10 years. i have two girls, one girl nearly 3 and a 3 month old girl and i find it really difficult to find any portuguese language classes for toddlers, or even learn at home books. anyone know of any ? it would have to be continental portuguese as hubby would not be best pleased if our daughters spoke with another accent !! i try to speak both english an portuguese but my toddler is very stubborn and says "no portugese" when i try speaking in portuguese to her. unless of course it includes the word prenda or gelado ;-)

hi I'm English but have been in the Algarve for 14 years. Name ideas for Lua (this was really tough for us too) : Benjamin , Tomás, Daniel, Bernardo. Of course pronunciation will always be a bit different! Have a Danish friend whose son is Sebastian at home & Sebastião at school

ClaraP · 06/10/2005 15:22

Hi, both my parents are portuguese, and I was born in London. I grew up speaking portuguese at home with parents. My parents raised the issue about languages at home etc with the Headmaster of our Primary school when we joined and he said that they should always speak to us in Portuguese at home otherwise we would not become bilingual, and that we spent the majority of the day at school and that would be enough. It worked for both my sister and I. They had friends who only spoke to their children in english and their children either not speak Portuguese or speak it worse that morst tourist which is a shame. I have followed my parents example and my 7 year is fluent in both english and Portuguese. He has just started going to Portuguese lessons which are run by the Portuguese Consulate for children of Portuguese parents and this is free. My son goes twice a week after school. It is worth while and works. I go to Portugal and people can not believe that I was born in England. Please speak to them in Portuguese and do not give into them as once they go to school english is very predominant in their lives and if you start speaking it at home also Portuguese just gets left behind. Good luck to everyone

ClaraP - Loved reading your post. I was in a similar position to you and your sis. My parents are portuguese but me and my sister were born and raised in canada. Anyway, my parents always made a point of speaking to us in portuguese and made us go to portuguese school three times a week. I love the fact that i am fluent in portuguese, and it has benefited me both academically and professionally. I would love for my little girls to learn portuguese better. You mention a class for children, where can i get more info on that ? I am based in SW14 and have tried looking for port. playgroups or toddler classes, but no luck as of yet. Do you know of any ? thanks

scaryman · 06/10/2005 22:12

Nope.

koikoi · 08/10/2005 23:25

Hi, I'm also Portuguese, living in the UK for 10 years. I have two children and speak only Portuguese to them. DH is German and speaks only German to the children. My dd is 3 and a half and understands all three languages but speaks mainly English - would love to go into more detail if interested! (this is my first msg to mumsnet!

2pinkshoes · 14/01/2006 23:58

hi,would anyone be able to help? im after some advice.
my dp is portugeuse and we want to bring up dd as bilingual, the plan being (i think) to move to portugal (porto) eventually. im rubbish at languages but am doing my best to learn! what is the best way to teach her? we were told that i should speak just english and he should speak only portugeuse to her so she understands they are separate languages. but then i want to learn as she does so want to practise with her? (dd 15 wks so no rush but panicing already)
help!
is anyone else in similar position?
apologies for stupidly long post
