Hi pinkshoes,
Thoough I would mention that my Dh doesn't quite speak portuguese fluently, but he knows a lot of words. He talks in his broken english to out DD all the time, and I think is great because we don't have many portuguese speakers around!
When she was small she mixedthe two as if it was one. Know a days she still speak some words oly in portuguese (unfortunately, she speaks mostly english....),ut she understand that they are two languages since she is 2.
in short, I think is fine if you want to speak a bit of portuguese too!

thanks!

am sure you're right, i guess kids learn so much faster than us as well. to her 2 languages will be normal. there are millions if kids who manage both.

although dd is far too little now but does anyone know of port language lessons in the leeds area, just so when the time comes kids can learn the grammer aswell as everyday stuff? thanks

Hello all, just joining in. I'm irish, my baby's dad is angolan, we speak in portuguese together and to baby in portuguese when both of us are together; otherwise he hears english in community/from my family/from me. Any portuguese/english speaking parents and babies in Manchester area fancy getting together to help our babies learn?! as there are so few portuguese books, resources etc available in england i think it would be helpful to support one another!

hi 2pinkshoes. My dh is portuguese & I'm english & we both speak in our own language only to kids & usually english between the 2 of us. Our ds who's 6 has much better english so far, having spent more time with me, & altho' he understands everything dh says he always answers in english! Our dd who's 2 already speaks half & half ie a sentence like "I need a chi chi" or "look a formiga!". We live in the Algarve & kids are at local school/creche so get portuguese all day long & mainly english at home. I really don't think it's at all confusing for them as they don't seem to "learn" language like adults do. I know families here whose kids are learning 3 languages at the same time without probs

hiii!

I only speak to my baby daughter in portuguese, as she will learn English no problem, living in the UK, as some have mentioned.

After failing to find any portuguese group for babies/toddlers and mums, I have been considering starting one, probably in Camden.

Please email me [email protected] if interested! When we have a few people we can arrange the first meeting.

I also understand the 'name' dilema, its hard to get a name that is pornounced correctly by speakers of both languages and also fashionable in both! some names are lovely in English but so old fashioned in portuguese and viceversa
