AIBU - Nursery and Suncream

WIBU to ask nursery not to reapply suncream during the day?

I apply a 12 hour suncream in the morning, they constantly reapply during the day and today I've picked up DD and her (pretty long) hair is greasy and covered in cream, clothes are stained with green/yellow around the neckline.

Her hair is tied up in a pony tail and it's literally stuck to her back.

Put her hair in a bun. Problem solved.

Moier · 29/04/2025 18:27

I'd want cream replying but only the cream I'd supply.. not theirs.. some kids are allergic to some.

12!hour sun cream will still rub off at nursery and needs to be reapplied. I imagine they’ll say your dd can’t go outside if you’re not willing for them to redo her sun cream. What’s wrong with her having a bit in her hair anyway, you can just wash it when she has her bath.

Tie your daughter’s hair up better. A plait will be less likely than a ponytail to get sun cream on it, and use clips for the wispy bits.

NuffSaidSam · 29/04/2025 18:31

YABU

Get a different brand if suncream that isn't so greasy.

Send her in with old clothes/clothes you don't mind getting stained.

Plait her hair to keep it as clean as possible and ask them to mind her hair out of the way when they put suncream on.

All of these are easier and better for your DD than risking sunburn or sun damage.

Maybe pop it up in a high bun so it’s off her neck and shoulders?

I know that it easier said then done. I can’t even get my daughter to wear a pony tail to nursery so you can imagine the state she is returned to me some days 🙈🙈🙈

You are asked this when you sign up to nursery. If your child need a separate cream they will use it. But realistically the logistics of using 30 different bottles of cream would be a nightmare.

Yes you’re being v v v unreasonable

fashionqueen0123 · 29/04/2025 18:37

Suncream doesn’t last that long. In Australia it’s banned to have that on the label. I thought this was going to be a post to say they won’t reapply and your kid is getting burnt. I’d be so happy they were doing it!

supersonicginandtonic · 29/04/2025 18:44

Oh for goodness sake. Why can't you wash her hair quickly? She'll need bathing or showering if she has had suncream on anyways. It takes a few minutes. Much quicker than spending the evening in A&e due to sun stroke.
I'm 5 kids in and have never only applied suncream once a day. Kids want to be outside in this weather.

cadburyegg · 29/04/2025 18:46

Jeez yabu. No wonder there’s a shortage of childcare workers.

crumblingschools · 29/04/2025 18:49

Cut her hair. Less likely to get nits!

MoominMai · 29/04/2025 18:59

Kids rub their face and are messy drinkers and eaters and will need mouth and nose sometimes wiping so trust a 12h SS is not that on children. Let them apply the SS and just send them wearing cheaper or already SS clothing.

A few years ago a watchdog programme showed that you still need to reapply 12 hour cream as areas wear off as you rub them....like wiping your face, friction on arms and knees....would you ask them not to wipe your child's dirty face or wash their hands? Get a good hair band put her hair up and be pleased she's not allowed to have a burned nose etc.

YellowHatt · 29/04/2025 19:08

The hair thing is really annoying, I can see that. You could ask them to be a bit careful around her hair but I don’t know if they’ll be able to achieve it as it must be difficult getting all the children covered quickly.

Can you send in a different suncream that’s less greasy?

jannier · 29/04/2025 19:11

Tespondent · 29/04/2025 18:02

Perhaps I should politely ask them to keep her hair out of the cream then. We can't wash everyday and it's currently unbrushable as it's stuck together.

Do you also say no glue, paint, sand? All these things get into hair.....as does yoghurt and other foods when they self feed. Dirty is good not just for germs but also for development fear of being dirty limits experience and participation.

ClawsandEffect · 29/04/2025 19:12

Plaited hair and old clothes.

You're risking nits not having hair firmly fastened anyway. And soon it'll be school uniform everyday. So just get into that routine now. At school they'll apply sun cream every time they go outside. They come home with suncream stains all over their white polos. I just buy the cheapest ones possible to keep costs down.

I could’ve written this myself tonight! Neither me nor my daughter want to go through hair washing her thick long hair every day! I’m going to put her hair up in a messy bun tomorrow and hope that misses the sun cream!

It’s a boiling hot day, your child will have been playing out, sweating and getting mucky. Put her in the bath or shower FGS!

Sunshine5791 · 29/04/2025 19:16

I used to work as a childminder. Sometimes parents would tell me at drop off that they had already suncreamed their child, so they would be ok until lunch time. I still used to reapply before we went out regardless. It’s not worth a complaint if the child gets burnt. Why wouldn’t you just bath your child and quickly wash their hair? It’s hot, they’ve been hot and sweaty playing outside, I appriciate a shower on days like this so I assume a child would too. And clean, but stained clothes, I don’t know any early years staff who have a problem with that.

2boyzNosleep · 29/04/2025 19:16

They have a responsibility to apply suncream.

YABU to expect them to withhold suncream.

A better option is to supply your own for them to apply for your DC. They shouldn't have any issue with this

Zogggg · 29/04/2025 19:19

Theunamedcat · 29/04/2025 18:09

Bit arrogant to assume a nursery nurse is more competent applying suncream than a parent especially when they can't even keep it out of the child's hair if anything they will be more slapdash as they have more than one child to put cream on

How is it arrogant? I’m not saying the staff are better at applying it I’m saying they probably don’t want to take the risk that a parent hasn’t put it on properly and then the child gets burnt?

Beautifulweeds · 29/04/2025 19:20

My word, our DC came home covered in allsorts for top to toe so sunscreen wouldn't be an issue. Had to bathe and wash hair every night but no problem as shows they've had fun. If we could get away with wipes ot was a bonus lol 😆

Caravaggiouch · 29/04/2025 19:21

YABU. If it takes too long to wash her hair then her hair needs to be shorter.
