Prams for 4 year olds holiday

Fightingtobepositive · 29/03/2025 14:47

Looking for any recommendations on a pram/stroller I can get for a summer holiday. DS will be 4 in April so think we will still need something to help us get around?

We went to salou when eldest was 3 and there was a pram/ buggy hire shop. I think maybe about 30 euro for the week ( 6 years ago). Might be worth investigating if you don't think you would use it again

RobinHeartella · 29/03/2025 18:49

4 is quite old for a stroller unless there are particular needs, I'd say.

You could consider a foldable scooter?

Lugging around a stroller you don't really need is a lot of effort on holiday.

She asked for buggy recommendations not parenting tips/ judgement. The child will just have turned 4. Holidays in the heat , late nights ,Iong days at the beach etc can be a lot for a four year old. Plus it's mums holiday too!!!

A second hand baby jogger would be fine.

I'm not being judgemental, I'm suggesting that taking it will be more trouble than it's worth. It's not relaxing carrying a big heavy stroller up steps and onto transport etc, when your kid doesn't need it.

Took my 4 year old on a beach holiday to France, never occurred to me we might need a pram/stroller. In fact, we didn't.

Omg wow that's so amazing!!

TurnThatLightOn · 29/03/2025 19:57

No it's not. I wasn't amazed.

Lovegame · 29/03/2025 20:05

How tall/heavy are they? You might be limited by that. I would speak to your child first. I thought I would take one away for my 3 1/2 year old and she was digusted that I was taking a buggy and she told me she wouldn’t use it. She didn’t and I ended up passing it on.

Nosaucelikemintsauce · 29/03/2025 20:06

Cheap one from Smythes.. Sell it when you get back.... I got my money back easy. Had been used a week end!!

ButIDontLikePeas · 29/03/2025 20:07

You can hire travel strollers from a company called Baboodle. I've never used them but I get targeted ads from them a lot. How tall / heavy is your 4yo? My 3y 9m DD1 occasionally gets very tired on long days out (she has also had a physio referral for hypermobility) and can just about fit in our uppababy minu but it's quite tight now. She prefers to hop on the buggy board attached to our big pram when DD2 is using it, but that would be less convenient to travel with.

JustAMum31 · 29/03/2025 20:11

What kind of holiday are you going on @Fightingtobepositive? 😊 Does it need to be particularly compact for cities/shops etc? Or getting on and off public transport?

DS is 4.5 and hasn’t used a buggy since he was 2 but we bought a secondhand BabyJogger City Mini GT for a recent trip we went on (theme park holiday) - it was a lifesaver. He’s 75th centile so on the bigger side and he had loads of room in it. And could even lie down comfortably.
We took it through the airport with us then handed it over at the door of the plane to be put in the hold 😊

If you tend to be out all day, it's a place for the child to nap (which, ime, they tend to do on holiday even if they no longer nap at home).

@OP I use a MiniUno TouchFold, I got it on FB marketplace.

Baby jogger gt city mini! My 5 yr old still fits in it when he gets half a chance

CoffeeAndChoccies · 29/03/2025 22:19

Baby Jogger GT City Mini! We’ve just got one for my nearly 3 year old as he finally grew out his pram. We do loads of walking (often on a time limit or long distances) and so need one that will last him for another couple of years until he can manage doing all the walking without (he often walks and then jumps in the buggy when he gets tired). We’ve used both the original GT City Mini - which my mum got second hand for at her house when DS was about 1, from her friend whose 6 year old finally no longer fit in it (it’s how we knew we wanted one as DS has always had bags of room in it at my mum’s) - and the GT City Mini 2 which we got new in the January sales this year. They have so much room. There are loads of the original GT’s floating round in eBay if you can find one in your area. We find the perk of the GT2 over the original GT is there is a foot rest you can stand up/down so when they fall asleep you just prop it up, drop down the back, and they’re essentially laid flat. DS still naps occasionally so it’s handy to have when we’re out and about.

Fightingtobepositive · 30/03/2025 08:28

Thank you so much all for the recommendations. I’ll have a nose to see if I can get one second hand. Great idea.

I know there are mums thinking little one is a little old but like others have said. Heat long walks and just some hands free time are essential on holiday.

We are looking for a beach holiday but love walking to explore. Little one is a busy bee but at an age where just walking around bores him to tears, especially in the heat. So to be honest some form of transport is a must for our own sanity.

I don’t find the pram a pain I find a million bags while DS refusing to walk a little harder than pushing a pram around. If he will walk fantastic. If not we have a place to put all the stuff 😆

thanks lady’s currently on eBay looking…

A beach holiday. Thinking of Spain. Yes exactly. We just want an option if he needs to rest or we won’t get far. I’d like a sit down while walking on holidays so why on earth wouldn’t a 4 year old.

I’d genuinely assume there was a physical disability if I saw a 4 year old in a buggy. My DS just turned 4 and none of his friends have used buggies for at least a year or more.

Then maybe you should keep your assumptions to yourself 👍

Assuming OPs child is disabled / has special needs if still needing a pram at 4, so it’s not fair to judge parenting.

I wouldn’t think prams could still take the weight of a child as intended for babies/toddlers only so not sure recommendations helpful.

Do you usually use a wheelchair at home? Assuming plane will let you take that with you?

Fightingtobepositive · 30/03/2025 09:52

No my child is not disabled.

assuming any child is disabled for any reason is absolutely awful and extremely judgemental. It’s good to know we’ve met a few mums-netters that seem to know absolutely everything about parenting on this thread. What a pleasure!

My son still regularly used a pram at 4, after pre school etc.

my daughter has barely used one since 3/3.5.

all kids are different.

On holiday last year kids were 9 months, 3.5 and 6, and the 2 oldest were fighting over sitting in the second seat of the double pram 😂 all normal rules go out the window on holiday after 6 hours playing in a pool they desperately wanted to be pushed about!

some hotels will hire one, look at if you would need to pay to take it on a plane as I think they are only free for under 2’s?

ButIDontLikePeas · 30/03/2025 10:12

If you are going to the beach, try looking for an out n about single nipper. On the out n about fb group, people have said that 5yo can still fit in them and they have big wheels / suspension for the rough terrain.

Ignore everyone commenting about kids not needing a buggy since age 3y or whatever. Everyones circumstances are different. We dont have a car, and live in London. There is no way id want to be without a buggy and then end up on a full day outing on the other side of London or somewhere with a tired DD who was refusing to walk home. Even with the buggy, I am quite sure that DD1 does more walking on a daily basis than a child the same age who is driven to nursery, driven to the shops, driven to an activity, driven home etc even though that similar child may not "have a buggy".
