Nursery Mother’s Day picnic at 2pm

Don’t know if I’m being unreasonable, but I’m equal parts angry and upset about this. Stupid nursery are holding a Mother’s Day picnic today at 2pm, with all the mums coming in.

I have a job so obviously can’t come into nursery at 2pm. Surely most mothers work, otherwise why would my child be in nursery to begin with?? Now all I can think about is my child sitting there feeling sad that I never showed up.

Is this crappy and poorly-planned of the nursery???

The school are constantly doing assemblies/performances at 10am, which I try my best to make it to. But 2pm is slap bang in the middle of most people’s working day.

You’d rather they didn’t do anything at all because you can’t make it? 🙄

Why doesn’t your DH go then if he’s off work?

Edited

Yes actually, why is there a need to do anything at all? Nursery is childcare. Surely a high proportion of parents needing to use a nursery are working at 2pm. I had client meetings at that time. It’s an ongoing problem with this nursery not considering working parents. They let you know about things two days before or not at all. What’s wrong with a card and some flowers? Mother’s day is on Sunday anyway.

It’s fairly obvious why my DH didn’t opt to go to a “bring your mum to nursery” mothers day picnic 🙄He did end up picking her up early. But he then had to work the rest of the afternoon and all evening. Pretty annoying when it’s meant to be childcare.

I'm a childminder and although I agree with you that it is childcare and parents are working so personally I don't invite parents in or send any homework or books home - but Ofsted do like parents to be as involved as possible.

How typical that on the day supposed to celebrate motherhood this just brings more mum guilt. I have to say I don’t understand this. Nursery is childcare. Surely most parents will be working? Getting the children to do some craft for their mothers would work much better.

Out of curiosity, what do they do for fathers day?

Sleepygrumpyandnothappy · 29/03/2025 18:55

Ours did a party at 3.30 which was more manageable. I’d say fewer than 50% of kids had their mum there though. I made it this year because I was strict with booking meetings, but neither DP or I made it to the Father’s Day party. They only do about four events a year where parents are invited to attend. Some I make, some I don’t, same with many of the other parents.

I particularly hate that our nursery do a Father's Day breakfast at 8am with bacon sandwiches so the 'dads can drop off and have breakfast on their way to work'.
Mother's day? Afternoon tea at 2/3pm every year in the middle of the working day.

Exactly. It's incredibly sexist.

Our nursery do this. I was actually able to go last year as I was on maternity leave but there weren’t many mothers there because as you say, we’re working.

I think it upsets us more than them really ❤️
