Buying a house with no bath?

SunshineFlowersFood · 26/01/2025 19:08

Would you buy a house with only a cubicle shower if you were planning on having a baby in the next year or so? Cost is a big factor in this and so if there is a way around bathing children with a shower I'd like to hear your tips please or advice if not a good idea.

Hello
We don't have a bath. We have a 5 bed family home and when we refurbished the main bathroom we decided to go for a walk in shower as that is our preference at this time. We are not looking to move but realise that not having a bath is preferred for some people so if we were selling we would reflect this in the price/negotiations.

Elle771 · 26/01/2025 19:12

In all honesty... no I wouldn't

As a temporary or one off/holiday type thing it's fine you can get inflatable baths etc especially when they are tiny and we have used those on holidays/at grandparents when no bath available

But for every day in own home I wouldnt

ARealFake · 26/01/2025 19:13

I wouldn't but then I love a bath, I'm not sure how I would manage bathing my daughter without either, plastic bath or sink bath ok when they're little but not as they get bigger x

No I wouldn't.

Baths are a great way of calming kids down for bed.

I went 4 years without a bath, never again!

TwentyTwentyFive · 26/01/2025 19:16

Honestly no I wouldn't. DS hated the shower until he was 4 having the option of a bath or shower meant he actually got washed without him screaming the place down!

AlexisP90 · 26/01/2025 19:16

No I wouldn't - personally I bath more than I shower

Caffeineneedednow · 26/01/2025 19:17

Yeah that was us. When we bought our current house we had a 2 yo and planned another. We got a toddler bath linked below

When we had the baby we used a more generic baby bath. Both of which fir in the base of the shower. The youngest actually likes shower and we have just convinced the eldest to shower so now they just hop in after one if us.

It's doable but I do miss having a bath

No. Bath is essential. Is it possible to rip out the shower to put in a bath, even a smaller corner one?

Moveoverdarlin · 26/01/2025 19:19

I never had baths when I was single and married, being bathless wouldn’t have bothered me. But as soon as children came along we use the bath every day without fail. Certainly in the years 0-10.

Seahorsesplendour · 26/01/2025 19:19

I wouldn’t either but only as I like a bath!! I’ve know of 3 families who don’t have baths and have had no issues with kids! Baby bath for the littlest ones then just shower with parents then on own.

A bath is nice and calming before bed but I believe it’s actually the water that is regulating and the cooling down of the body afterwards that helps make them sleepy so a shower can work just as well!

kids don’t know any different if they grow up with something & you just adapt! I wouldn’t over think it’ll you’ll make it work for you!

TheGriffle · 26/01/2025 19:19

We bought a house with no bath but my DD’s were 4 and 8 and we’re happy having showers. We lasted a year before we put one in. Is there room for you to put a bath in at all? If you’re a handy family it’s fairly easy to do yourself, Dh did ours.

Overthebow · 26/01/2025 19:21

I wouldn’t but it’s because my dd hates the shower no matter how much we try. So it would make life very difficult for us without a bath.

ScaryM0nster · 26/01/2025 19:23

Little babies - plastic tub baby bath on a table. Or in the kitchen sink.

Bigger babies and toddlers - decathlon portable paddling pools in the shower tray. Just get a shower head that makes it easy to fill.

3yr old - happily showers with me.

We’ve got a bath, but would be fine without it and using that method. There’s a lot that says you can’t miss what you haven’t had. That applies to the baby rather than you.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 26/01/2025 19:24

Just use a baby bath? I've done both with my dc- normal bath, baby bath, used the shower on toddler. I personally wouldn't buy a property without a bath though. I've only lived in rentals. But on the flip side I know people who are perfectly happy with just a shower.

SunshineFlowersFood · 26/01/2025 19:30

Thanks all. My partner and I never have a bath personally and I know children sort of 6 plus would be fine in the shower but I wasn't sure about 0-5, the young children in our wider family have a lengthy bath every evening before bed and their parents talk of the benefits of play and relaxation to wind down before bed but I didn't know of anyone who hadn't had one, thanks for the comments

We did. Used a baby bath for the first 6 months to a year. Then bought a seat in the shower cubicle. Now we have the choice.

As a tine baby he took a couple of showers with me. Hubby dress and dried him while I finished my shower.

RandomMess · 26/01/2025 19:32

Ours fitted in the large baby bath until they were 6 and they were very tall for their age back then.

Squidtentacles · 26/01/2025 19:33

I wouldn't. We've not tried with our toddler (using a shower) but I know from what he's like, that he'd be very dramatic about having a shower. I suppose they'd get used to it but it would be difficult to transition from a baby bath to a shower for most young children. Also, a bath takes up a nice chunk of the evening to entertain a toddler - mine loves playing with his toys in the bath!

trivialMorning · 26/01/2025 19:39

We walked away from houses that has no baths just showers - quite popular in houses that had older owners- but our kids were already born and used to baths and were a good option for evening till eczema put a stop to daily baths.

I think you'd be okay with baby baths for a long while after birth - and could maybe rig something up after that if needed.

Mugcake · 26/01/2025 19:47

No, it's a pain in the ass. We have to fill the baby bath with the shower and it's more difficult to wash them. We're now at a weird point where our toddler is getting to big for the baby bath and hates going in the shower. I wouldn't get anywhere without a bath with a young child again.

The toddler snuggle bath was great and did my very tall child up until he was 5.

This is the new one but we got ours on marketplace ( and sold on when not needed)

Aw thank you so much! That's really helpful 😊

TwirlyPineapple · 26/01/2025 20:08

We use the bath daily for our three year old and he has no intention of switching to showers any time soon. He loves playing the bath for 30+ minutes so it fills a significant chunk of time each day. So no, I wouldn't buy a house without a bath.

WWY · 26/01/2025 20:26

If it saves you a lot of money then I'd buy it. You can get those full sized pop up baths on Amazon which have good reviews. I rarely have a bath as I find them boring.
