Which are the best real nappies?

My sister is expecting in the summer and wants to use real nappies. She is cost conscious so what is the best value starter pack? And which are the best real nappies in everyone's opinion as I am tempted to use them next time.....

That did help and thank you so much for taking the trouble to explain some of the basics. I am sure your advice will be useful.

I thought kittykins was an excellent site. I even found these rather minimalist, pretty (and cheap) Disana tie-ons but they need a booster or folded pad so might be too much effort...

Hohum, scratchy head.

Getting very excited about concept of bespoke super funky wraps from Erica. How cool would that be!

Cooperoo · 27/02/2005 19:24

You will be an addict like a lot of us before long hee hee.
The Disana tie ons are a good economical buy I think but I have heard that they are not very absorbant at all. They are one that I haven't tried so I can't speak from experience.
Enjoy and congrats on your expected baby.
Try www.lovebums.co.uk too. Or do a google search, there are so many to choose from......
Ebay is always worth a look too.

Cooperoo - wanted to pick your brain. I'm due in June too (although only my first). Am planning to use Tots Bots with Motherease wraps (haven't quite decided between Rikki and Airflow yet...). But my nappy lady advisor told me that the wraps are only suitable from 10lbs. Doesn't really seem worthwhile getting newborn wraps for the first month or so - especially as everything will be new and I don't know if we'll be able to cope with cloth nappies as well. But having seen that you're planning to cloth from birth, I just wondered what you would be doing?

Hmmm
This is something I am still pondering. I think the ME Rikki may work for a smaller baby as the velcro is adjustable. I am waiting for feedback from my friend but her grandad has recently died so I feel now is not the right time to start asking. I am pretty sure that she used ME rikki wrap and some Nature Babies from birth and her ds was 7lb something. I didn't like the shape of the NB wraps on my first baby so will prob stick with the ME. Drop in on the June thread and I will be sure to let you know when I get some feedback. I have heard people talk of Eanie snibs but I have never seen or used one myself. I think they are very cheap so ideal for the first stage. I have been putting off my newborn nappy homework as i know it will involve spending money. I have however bought a load of kissaluv size 0 seconds from Twinkle Twinkle which are fab. I couldn't resist them even though my size ones will be good from 10lbs. Sorry I can't help more.

Cooperoo · 28/02/2005 10:14

Try ebay or the buy and sell forums for newborn wraps too. They are worn for a short period of time and so are usually in good condition and might be a cheaper way of getting some cheaper nb wraps.

cornflakegirl · 28/02/2005 10:41

Thanks Cooperoo. I do read the June thread, but rarely post - can't keep up with the conversation! Was thinking about just having a go with the Rikki wraps and seeing what happened...

I am now writing an addendum re the cotton bottoms that I have. I am generally very pleased with them, as they are very soft and dry fast and fit any build. I now want to add some hemp prefolds to my stash and wonder if anyone can recommend a good supplier in the UK. I would be interested to hear any reviews of hemp flat nappies and hemp prefolds?

hub2dee · 01/03/2005 17:45

Maisiemog: In a spot of obsessive nappy surfing the other day, I repeatedly read good things about 'Wonder-Fulls' - some kind of layered hemp liner. Might be what you are after.

misdee · 01/03/2005 17:47

i like the look of wonderoos here but they seem pricey to me. has anyone used them? are they good?

I have the XL savannah too and it is cute. I will have to get some more for my new baby. Does anyone have the other ME prints? What are they like? Yellow tots are neutral if you want to use them on more than one baby. (Hope I am not butting in).

not butting in at all

have seen these here but havent used them so am unsure. i'd be using them with tots bots if i do get any.

Cooperoo · 01/03/2005 18:34

Ahh nature babies wraps. They are FAB designs. They did not fit my dd at all though. She has v chunky thighs and they were just the wrong shape and actually leaked on us.
I think the bindings can go grey too.....I tried two second hand pairs though so haven't had some from new. I was able to sell them on for the same price I paid though so no harm done.
I have tried a few wraps and the motherease are def the ones for us. I do with they had better designs though. Have you seen www.lovebums.co.uk or www.bearbehinds.com. or the poochies wraps? I have one of each of these for dd now she is older and they are fab too.

Cooperoo · 01/03/2005 19:51

I should add that my dd has the biggest thighs and lots of things didn't fit that well so don't be put off based on my experience.
