What do people do about baby monitors when travelling?

Looking for advice/recommendations please.
What do people do when travelling with baby about a monitor? Do you take your one from home and re-connect to the WiFi wherever you are? Or do you take a cheaper/second monitor? I've been looking for bluetooth ones but not having any luck. Does anyone have any recommendations please? I'm reluctant to unplug the monitor from the baby room at home as it's set up perfectly!

Do you need one? I've never used a monitor on travels.

MumChp · 17/01/2025 01:49

Never had one. Worked fine.

Second monitor. Simple audio one that doesn’t require Bluetooth.

We have this super simple one which doesn't need WiFi, it's so great we even started using it at home www.argos.co.uk/product/8621072?clickPR=plp:5:36

We take video monitors from home. I actually specifically chose one without WiFi as I didn’t want weirdos logging or hacking into it! So just plug in and go.

MassiveSalad22 · 17/01/2025 07:28

We never had a video/wifi monitor anyway so just took ours and an adaptor. By kid 3 though we always forgot it and realised we could hear her just fine without 😄

Hanto · 17/01/2025 07:32

I never took one travelling.

Seaside31 · 17/01/2025 07:36

We’ve always taken one with us when traveling. We use this one 😊 So simple - just plug in and go.

We just took our monitor from home with us - video monitor but not on WiFi or anything so not a big deal to move.

We used a monitor at home because we didn't always hear the baby upstairs over the TV downstairs. Why would that be any different when staying with family?

Presumably OP isn't planning a trip to a single hotel room and wants to be sure she can hear her baby if they wake, which is perfectly sensible.

AKettleOfDifferentFish · 17/01/2025 07:42

We just use a cheapie audio-only monitor (house is small so we don't need anything cleverer than that!). It was less than £20 so you could just buy one of those to take on travels? Think ours is a Motorola one it's excellent and picks up the sound very well.

Sprogonthetyne · 17/01/2025 07:43

We took ours from home, but it was a relatively basic one with minimal set up. A few times when we forgot me and DH would do a video call through messenger, mute one of the phones and leave it in babies room.

When they’re potentially a few floors up, you’ve got the TV on or music etc. It’s pretty obvious why some might need a monitor…

pinkwaffles · 17/01/2025 08:02

I wouldn't have one that needs to be connected to WiFi in the first place.

mindutopia · 17/01/2025 08:51

We never had a wifi one at home. Just cheap sound only one. Just took it with us unless it was a hotel room set up where we’d not be sitting in another room in the evenings.

MarioLink · 17/01/2025 10:18

We took ours unless we'd all be sleeping in the same room then no need.

MarioLink · 17/01/2025 10:18

First was pretty basic no WiFi needed.

Superscientist · 17/01/2025 10:21

We use an app and our phones if we find that we need something whilst we are away.

DappledThings · 17/01/2025 10:23

Only ever used an audio only, plugs into the wall cheapest available one at home or away.

BarnacleBeasley · 17/01/2025 10:28

We use this audio monitor as it has a really good range: https://www.bt.com/help/user-guides/baby-monitors/bt-digital-baby-monitor-400
This is what we use at home for our 3yo too as he doesn't get out of bed in the night, he would just yell if he needed something. And it's pretty lo-tech so easy to take with us.

How ever did we cope before monitors and apps?

Ah thank you, why didn't I think of that before 🙄
Sorry for not specifying but we're travelling to visit family and now baby is 6m+ and sleeping on her own we'll be putting her down in a bedroom and then rejoining family for the evening. Sadly my ears will not stretch up 2 floors and closed doors but thank you so much for your suggestion.

Thanks all for the recommendations and links, will take a look today! Much appreciated

We have a BT one which we take with us, it doesn’t need WiFi or Bluetooth.

KnickerlessFlannel · 17/01/2025 10:48

We got a really basic one from an aldi/lid toddler event, just two units that each plug in.

I'm sure you do, but please do ensure that your home security is watertight as WiFi cameras can be hacked and images used for nefarious purposes. It really does happen in the UK.
