Oh and i never said your dc did Smug.

SmugColditz · 05/05/2008 15:16

Maybe the standard of hygiene in their house was generally low, and maybe they were lying to you about how often the children got bathed, but the only child I ever knew to smell was a 6 year old who by his own admission 'don't have baths'.

Once or twice a week is normal amongst the majority of people I speak to. None of their children smell.

I used to bath ds1 every day and it was TRASHING his skin. It would have been outright abusive to carry on. the best this for eczema is plenty of emolliant and not much else.

aGalChangedHerName · 05/05/2008 15:20

I don't use soap on my dc either but the dd's have loads of hair and they honestly do stink if i don't wash their hair every day. Imagine milk, food and sweat. I sleep with they youngest and it aint pleasant.

I use the emolliant(sp) and it cleans without destroying their skin.

I don't know why their dc smelt but it made me want to wash the dd's more often than i maybe would have I didn't want people to think mine did smell.

See, mine don't drink much milk, they are 5 and 2, and as babies they didn't have much hair. they can eat now without getting it in their hair and they get a warm flanneling after every meal (head and hands and arms!). They don't sweat much, and neither do I, because I keep a cool house (for the eczema and asthma) and their beds get changed twice weekly, and usually their clothes get changed every day if not more.

I can see how a child would smell after 2 days if he/she was getting food in their hair or sweating a lot, or spilling milk, or if they were in dirty clothes or a dirty bed, but I honestly don't think the parents of your mindee were doing what I do.

I also find my children need to be bathed more in the summer when they are playing outside in the dust and mud.

Twice a week for my two, ages 6 and 4.

LuckySalem · 05/05/2008 15:37

I prefer to bathe DD every night but she's got exczema so she gets it every other night.

meglet · 05/05/2008 15:43

every other night for my 18 month old, he has a bit of excema so every night was too much.

aGalChangedHerName · 05/05/2008 15:44

Mine are 3.8 and 1.8 with long hair, no table mannersand the youngest in nappies so it is different.

I wasn't suggesting that your dc were like those dc or that you were like that mum honestly. It has made me a little paranoid after cming for so long.
Plus the fact that my dd's know that it is bath then bed and it gets them in wind down mode for going to bed with no tears. They will be getting bathed every night for years to come lol

minster · 05/05/2008 18:39

Every day! They absolutely love it & it gives me a relatively peaceful 30 minutes before bed while they splash around & I read to them. Don't use any kind of product in the bath & their skin is beautifully soft. 7yo has her hair washed once a week & 18mo has his done about twice a month.

We love bath time

Blandmum · 05/05/2008 18:45

I used to do mine every night as part of the evening 'wind down' to bed. But that was my coice

KaSo · 05/05/2008 19:01

At that age, every night as far as I'm concerned. I stopped doing it nightly once they were 3/4.

AbbeyA · 05/05/2008 19:44

I just found it much easier to have a routine for bedtime and then there was no difficulty getting them to bed and sleep! Bath, followed by a story in bed and then they went to sleep- but then I loved that part of the day.

stuffitall · 05/05/2008 20:06

same kaso -- and i still get mine in the bath four - five times a week age 9 and 11 though 12yo sorts himself out

solo · 05/05/2008 23:40

Blimey! I can't imagine my 9yo only having a bath 4 times a week...he rarely has a bath, but has a shower every morning and has done since he was 3.6

stuffitall · 06/05/2008 07:19

oh solo don't make us feel mucky!

solo · 06/05/2008 13:12

LOL! Sorry, I'm just mega fussy about clean bodies! I don't want him aged 14 being a less than pleasant smelling lad and wondering why he has no girlfriends! He's a very handsom boy, so it'd be a shame.

Thankyouandgoodnight · 06/05/2008 14:02

Oooh now here's a question - how old are they when they can start managing to have a shower??

IdrisTheDragon · 06/05/2008 14:08

Mine are 4 and 2. Not sure how often they have baths. Not every day. Maybe 3 or 4 times a week?

People who do it every other day , how do you remember when you did it last? I am really useless at being able to remember when I did it last

Bewilderbeast · 06/05/2008 14:14

mine (now 18 months) gets 2 to 3 depending on how grubby he is. At least one of those will be me or DP putting the plug in the bath when we have a shower and chucking ds in the deep end!

stuffitall · 06/05/2008 14:43

as old s you like.. take em in with you!
he's not that smelly -- while my 12 y o... nuff said

solo · 06/05/2008 18:14

Like I said before, my Ds was 3.6 and yes, I just put him under the shower in front of me, washed him, showing him how to do it for himself and by the time he was 5.6, he was pretty good at just being supervised.

When I brought my Dd home, I had no boiler, so no hot water, but luckily had an electric shower, so she came in with me from a couple of weeks old...as a consequence of that, I have no trouble, tears or screaming when washing her hair or pouring water over her head etc...best thing ever!!!
