How long did you use the baby monitor?

Was speaking to a friend who laughed when I said we still use the baby monitor for our DS (he's 2.5...)

She said after they are in a toddler bed it's pointless as they will just come in/ you will hear them if they need you.

Now, I don't Care much what people think and I think we will be using it for the next year or even more but just out of interest thought I would see what others do?

Just interest really. No judgement or anything just wondering really.

At least 3, could have been 4 or nearly 4 🙈 I'm quite anxious though!

TinyTeachr · 18/12/2024 21:18

Depends on your house I reckon. With eldest, we never bothered with one at all. With the twins, till they were three - we'd changed the layout of downstairs and you couldn't hear them from the kitchen of they called or cried.

Yeha same for me. He's only literally across the hall and does coming running in if he needs anything but it definitely makes me sleep a little easier just having the baby monitor on.

Mine is 3.4 and I still use it, I want to know if he calls out, is sick in the night…has a nightmare. it’s not video only audio. We are only in a flat but I’d rather hear him and go to him quickly if needed! I wouldn’t say it’s anything to do with anxiety just ease really.

That's also true. Split levels etc would make it much more of a must

I never had one as we lived in a flat until she was one.

Edited

Yeah that makes sense. Definitely easier to hear a problem before a problem comes running in ans throws up on you haha

I guess I am definitely more on the anxious side with it. DS sleeps like a log and has done for a while now but I still like to be able to have the monitor near. Makes me feel at ease.

Really is no right or wrong - just interesting

Our dd is 3 in March and I still use it for her but only in the evenings. For overnight our dog now has it which will probably continue forever so our monitor isn't going anywhere!

SillyNavySnail · 18/12/2024 21:31

Until maybe 2.5yrs, after that leave the stairs gate open for her, and only occasionally put it on, if she's poorly etc and more likely to need us. Have never had it on overnight, all sleep same level.

Youngest is 20 months and will likely keep hers on until 2.5yrs, when downstairs. Put it in my pocket during her nap and i do the gardening etc.

TwirlyPineapple · 18/12/2024 21:34

It depends on the house and the child, I think.

We still use the baby monitor for our 3 year old because he's a big rules follower and will absolutely not get out of bed in the night at all. So if he needs the toilet or needs a cuddle or has wet the bed or been sick etc, he will just stay in bed and cry/moan to himself. He would never get out of bed to come and get us. We wouldn't definitely hear that from our room if we were asleep, so we have the baby monitor still.

We still have the video monitor just because it’s handy to look at last/first thing to see if he’s awake or not, or if he’s properly awake if he cries out in the night. We’ll probably get rid of that soon though.

Redcrayons · 18/12/2024 21:41

Around 3. Not intentionally though, he threw it down the stairs and broke it. I realised it would be mad to spend that much money on a child who was perfectly capable of making himself heard.

Spanielsaremad · 18/12/2024 21:41

I never used one on DS.

Rosesanddaffs · 18/12/2024 21:42

My friend still uses hers for her 7 year old son, I do think that’s too old as a 7 year old can shout out, get out of bed etc.

He doesn’t have any health issues, but she insists she needs to watch him.

AwakeNotThruChoice · 18/12/2024 21:42

Daughter is 4.5 and we still use it.

We have a large house and I’d never hear her getting up or calling me from downstairs. She’s asleep by 7pm so I just keep it downstairs with me until I go up to bed.

Psychologymam · 18/12/2024 21:43

still have the three year old in same room so I suppose that counts?!

ChocolateLemsip · 18/12/2024 21:45

Age 6 I think? 😂

7/8 might be starting to get a little intrusive imo but if it makes your friend happy and works for them I guess.

It probably definitely helps her anxiety

About 14 months tbh.. once in a toddler bed we got rid. You could hear him cry/shout from anywhere in the house anyways.

rommymummy · 18/12/2024 21:52

Still have one for my 3yo

SnapdragonToadflax · 18/12/2024 21:53

4ish, but later on only for evenings when the TV was on and we might not hear, or when I was outside in the garden. Or when he was ill. It's useful though, I don't think there's anything wrong or babyish about using it - sometimes they're upset but don't want to get out of bed.

annlee3817 · 18/12/2024 22:02

Stopped using ours with DD1 when she was around 3.5 I think, because the monitor broke, DD2 is just over 2 and I'm in no rush to get rid of it, also an anxious mum

MumChp · 18/12/2024 22:08

We never had one.

SErunner · 18/12/2024 22:12

Downstairs, still using at 3.4. Upstairs, never bothered as room just next door and could always hear her. We don't have a big house, if we did and I was worried I wouldn't hear her when upstairs I'd still use it. I wouldn't describe myself as a remotely anxious parent, just seems sensible to be sure you can hear them!

MajaTime · 18/12/2024 22:14

We still use ours with our 4 year old. We're on a different floor with a heavy fire door that she'd never be able to open and I doubt we'd hear her knock (very deep sleepers). I much prefer hearing her yell for us over the monitor. But we don't use the video functionality. It's there but we turn it face down. Idk, I feel like she deserves the privacy.

Kandyfloss10 · 18/12/2024 22:15

Around 3.something
