How long did you use the baby monitor?

Was speaking to a friend who laughed when I said we still use the baby monitor for our DS (he's 2.5...)

She said after they are in a toddler bed it's pointless as they will just come in/ you will hear them if they need you.

Now, I don't Care much what people think and I think we will be using it for the next year or even more but just out of interest thought I would see what others do?

Just interest really. No judgement or anything just wondering really.

We still have one in our 7 yo room 🙈 not to watch her, but I use the intercom to tell her when it's time for lights out.

Ocassionally her 3 yo sister will wander in there if she wakes and we are still downstairs, so if I see that I'll run up and get her out 😂 I also quite like having it when we are sat in the garden too as we wouldn't hear them shouting.

I've asked her and she said she wants to keep it still 🤷🏻

We only just in the last fortnight removed ours from DD1s (3.5yo) room, in preparation for putting it in DD2s (8m) room when she moves in there after Christmas. We kept it because our stairs are steep and even with a stairgate, I was worried about her trying to get down to see us on an evening and falling. It was easier that she knew just to shout into the camera and we would come to here.

It’s totally up to you. We stopped when our son was about a year which was obviously quite early but I found it really contributed to my anxiety, and we could always hear him when he woke anyway. We would still use it if we were staying with family or somewhere where we wouldn’t necessarily hear him if he woke up.

If it’s reassuring you and suits you to keep using it then do. You only really need to stop when it becomes an invasion of privacy and you’re years away from that being a factor.

When they stopped napping during the day (so 2/2.5 for my two). No need for it at night because we could hear them anyway or they would come in to us once they were out of the cot

Stopped when they were 2y4m and 8mo as we moved house and could hear them without one. Previous house had a closed in staircase and you couldn't hear anything.

I think after the first couple of years its just habit rather than need tbh.

Yeah its totally personal choice. Interestingly I spoke with someone at nursery this morning who has a 7 year old and he asks for the baby monitor to be on still. He's quite an anxious child and he says he feels better when mummy and daddy can see him at night.
Her other child who's now 3 she said she never used one

Guess the anxiety can work the other way too!

We didn't buy one until my daughter was 2!
In our old house she was in our room so didn't need one. We moved when she was 2 and had her own room and found I didn't wake to her so have the monitor. We still use and she's 4. She wakes once or twice a week on a good day, 2 or 3 times a night on a bad week

We only have a very basic audio monitor

SJM1988 · 19/12/2024 12:51

DS was 4 years old and DD was 2.5 years old.
DS I just left the camera in his room so I could check what he was up to if moving around. Moved it when DD was born.
DD the camera broke and I haven't replaced it. Some days I could do with it just to check if she makes noise whats going on

When we took the side off the cot, as after that if they peek up they just wandered straight out of view.

My little one is 4 and I still use a video monitor, however she quite often has breathing difficulties so we will be keeping ours for as long as we can.

We still use one at 3.5 as we have a really long house and wouldn't hear him. Also he doesn't get out of his toddler bed, prefers to just yell. And even if he did get up, he wouldn't necessarily know where to look for us as he thinks we just go to bed after he does, but obviously we are secretly downstairs watching TV and eating cake.
