We are getting plenty of pees, but no poos in 36 hours- now 8 days old. She is BF with 1/2 top ups of formula. Thanks

How many wees exactly is plenty? If it's fewer than around 8 per 24h I'd be concerned she isn't feeding quite enough. How iften are you breastfeeding?

Does she have any signs of dehydration, for example are her lips plump? Does she have alert periods looking around

Generouslymeticulous · 10/12/2024 14:13

I’d check in with your local lactation consultant.

LetsNCagain · 10/12/2024 14:14

For comparison, both of mine were doing more than 5 poos a day at that age. Every baby is different but none at all is unusual.

Has the meconium all passed, I mean was the most recent poo a mustard colour?

That's not that unusual. My BF with one formula bottle a day babies often went a week. There is not that much waste in breastmilk.

I fed my dc2 the same, mostly bf with the occasional bottle. It's true BF babies can go longer without poos but my understanding is that starts later, not at 8 days old. When they're that young, they're often pooing simultaneously while feeding

WingleWom · 10/12/2024 14:24

Are there any other symptoms or issues?

When mine was a newborn he didn't poo for a week at a time (even at a couple of weeks old) and I was constantly told it's nothing to worry about. However, I tried bicycle legs and warm baths and wiping his bum with warm water but nothing worked.

It later turned out to be a symptom of cows milk allergy and even now at 2 years old, constipation is the first indication to me he's had something he's allergic to.

I'm saying this because diarrhoea is more common but it completely resolved overnight when he was diagnosed.

I would not worry about it but just have in mind that if it continues it may be a symptom of something.

After a few months they wanted to give him daily laxatives and I'm glad I declined and pushed them to consider an allergy as otherwise it wouldn't have been treating the root cause.

Noodlesnotstrudels · 10/12/2024 14:28

The NHS website is very clear that under 6weeks old, even breastfed babies should be pooing at least once a day and most lactation consultants would say at least twice a day if they are transferring milk effectively. @TTC12, I'd try and get some extra feeds + formula into her today and give your midwife or HV a call to see if you can get a check over.

TTC12 · 10/12/2024 14:30

thanks all- so far today 6 wet nappies, and alert enough when awake. Her poo had changed to mustard colour with seeds, and she is very gassy and looks like she is straining to go. I phoned the midwife and they suggested an Oz of Cooled boiled water. Has anyone tried this?

I thought that was no longer recommended and was considered to be dangerous advice. I would bf as much as possible.

LetsNCagain · 10/12/2024 14:51

How often are you breastfeeding op? As your baby is only 8d old and you are (potentially) concerned about her output, I'd cancel any outings and simply sit in bed/on the sofa wearing a button-down pyjama and feed her all day long. Schedule your breaks instead of scheduling the feeds, if you see what I mean. Then review after 24h

LetsNCagain · 10/12/2024 14:54

She is much too young for CBW. Water will not solve the (potential) issue of too few calories going in, it'll actually make it worse.

Breastfed babies this age don't really get constipated. What goes in, comes out. If not enough is coming out, it's because not enough is going in

user2848502016 · 10/12/2024 15:18

It's fairly normal for BF babies not to poo every day.
As PP have said just feed as much as you can for the next couple of days (and prepare for an explosion!)

MessyNeate · 10/12/2024 15:20

How does baby's belly look? Bigger? Swollen?

If you're worried please call GP

CrunchySnow · 10/12/2024 15:24

I'm a midwife....the oz of cooled boiled water your midwife suggested is really terrible advice and I would recommend you don't do this...especially an oz, that is waaaaay too much. I really wouldn't be worried at this point. 36 hours is ok. I would just do some gentle tummy massage, cycle their legs and keep feeding breastmilk.

Dobbythechristmaself · 10/12/2024 15:30

Very normal when BF. There is very little waste. Think one of mine went 10 days once and I was getting very upset but then did a huge poo ski so clearly not constipated. 3 days is very normal.

Attheendoftheday86 · 10/12/2024 15:32

My breast fed daughter didn't poo for 10 days! I was so worried and took her to the doctor's after 4 days and after 7 days but the doctor said it's absolutely fine as she was still having wet nappies.

Only when they’re at least 6 weeks old.

Tinseltotties · 10/12/2024 15:46

I definitely wouldn’t give her water, her tummy is tiny and you’d be filling it with something that provides no nutrition or calories, I was told this is old advice. I’m not sure if 6 wees is enough though. How confident are you about breastfeeding? Is there a chance she’s not getting anything/much? There’s lots of support available to help check the latch and milk transfer. Can you try expressing? Or just keep her on your boob a lot?
also try a little light tummy massage and bicycle kicks. Breast fed babies do often (not mine…) go less but I did think that was after a few weeks

Definitely give this a try.

This is no longer the advice until after 6weeks old.

How often should my baby poo?
Because breastmilk is a natural laxative, a baby aged between 4 days and 6 weeks who is breastfeeding well should pass at least 2 yellow poos a day.
If your baby has not pooed in the past 24 to 48 hours, speak to your midwife or health visitor as this may mean they are not getting enough milk.

I had lost alot of blood during delivery, then needed iron, so there was a delay in my milk coming through. I’m going to pump as much as I can over the next few hours, and try and make sure she is getting enough milk from me.

Babies are generally more efficient than getting milk out than a pump so you'd be better off prioritising feeding, definitely get some advice from a trained breastfeeding support worker as well

I agree with this. Are you just pumpimg to feed or are you feeding from the breast?

TrippTover · 10/12/2024 21:11

Very normal - DS once went 13 days and doctor wasn’t worried!
