maybe - why?

FAQ · 28/04/2008 14:18

well judge away if you want to - I have a 7yr old that's been a handful of times, a 4yr old that's never been and an 11 month old that's never been.....

It's my nephew.
I haven't really got an opinion on it but my mum feels that it's terrible that he's never been (and before you ask, she can't take him).

I'm sure there are medical reasons which would prevent a child going swimming.

I personally find swimming and learning to swim not only pleasurable but also an important life skill, and I think the earlier children get used to the water the better.

Beauregard · 28/04/2008 14:20

My dd's(6 and 2) have only been to a pool twice.
If you have nothing better to do then judge away.

TotalChaos · 28/04/2008 14:20

no. amongst things, swimming pools are a pita if you have more than 1 under 5 because of having to have 1-1 parent/child ration.

is their a medical reason for your nephew not going?
if not tbh I would judge
why don't you offer to take him?

is there any particular reason your nephew can't go? i think it's a real shame kids aren't taken swimming. ours love it.

bossykate · 28/04/2008 14:22

i think there are reasons why it might be difficult to go say every week - but for a child never to have gone at all in four years is pretty sad.

emkana · 28/04/2008 14:23

the only reason is that his parents don't want to go.

I can't take him because he's in a differnet country.

Mine have hardly even been as I could not get to one (live in a rural place and could not get to one). We could have gone at the weekends but as dh and I would probalby have preferred self mutliation we did other things. Ds is nearly 5 and am just going to start teaching him to swim now. IMO he has not missed out on anything - we did lots of other fun out doors things instead. I would be really psd off if someone wanted to pass judgement because of that.

My ds didn't go for about a year due to molloscum. If they can go then personally I think it's a good idea to try to take them. I know that pools have rules about the number of under 5's allowed per adult, which will stop some mums from being able to go. I wouldn't judge someone for it. My parents never took us, we can all swim now.

marina · 28/04/2008 14:24

Dd did not go in a swimming pool until the age of nearly four because of repeated horrible ear infections
We stopped taking her to see ds swim because she was getting really upset about it
There can be very good reasons for reaching this age and never having been swimming, unfortunately
