Anyone else got a tiny baby?

Snailandwhales · 20/11/2024 18:58

My DS is 7 months old and only weighs 14lb, he was born at full term 39 weeks but he was very small then. I’m keep waiting for a growth spurt but his weight gain is very slow! He still wears size 2 nappies and is only just in 3-6 clothes.

Everytime we go to activities with other babies he’s always by far the smallest. Developmentally he’s fine, he’s been crawling since 6 months and babbles away. But I’m getting worried he’s going to be 5ft when fully grown or still in baby clothes when he starts school! Has anyone else got a tiny baby? I feel like the only one.

I have a ten kilo two year old. It’s pretty worrying for us although we see health visitor regularly. He was born weighing 3lb though so is following his curve but hard to not worry, especially when people make thoughtless nasty comments

Snailandwhales · 20/11/2024 19:08

@theotherfossilsister we were getting weighed regularly too although they seem less interested as he’s developing ok. I can’t help but worry though! We did take him to a paediatrician once for allergies (paid privately) who was more concerned about his weight but gps aren’t worried either.

People on here are going to think I’m lying and I’ve no way to prove otherwise, but my eldest dd was wearing size 3-6 when she was 18 months old. She was also still bald, her hair started growing when she was 2. She was also walking at 9 months and a very early talker. We’d have people filming her in the street/restuarants etc as she looked barely more than a newborn baby who was running around and talking. She’s now nearly 17 and won’t allow us to measure her height, but her 12yo sister is already taller than her at 4ft 7. She’s also in only size 1 and a half shoes and her sisters wearing 4. Me and their dad are very short but she very much feels like she drew the short straw (pun intended) as her younger sister is clearly going to be far taller than her

Should add she’s completely fine health wise, both extremely fit and sporty and intelligent as well

Avie29 · 20/11/2024 19:14

My little girl is 10 nearly 11 months and only 3lb heavier than your LO, i can see she is developing well and gaining weight nicely so im not worried she was classed as small when she was born but i can see she is growing xx

Is it worth her seeing the GP? It may be a growth issue that could have benefitted from hormone treatment.

Medstudent12 · 20/11/2024 19:18

OP how tall and you and her dad? That makes a big difference.

Snailandwhales · 20/11/2024 19:28

@Medstudent12 I’m 5ft 7 and DH about 5ft 11 so average heights. Interestingly DS is quite long, he always outgrows clothes in length first.

My eldest was 5lb 12oz when she was born at 38w and then had sepsis which resulted in her dropping to the 0.4th centile for weight but the 75th centile for length. She was so tiny and scrawny for so long. The HV kept telling me not to worry, she was still being monitored by the neonatalogy outpatients and that she would find her curve. I never believed her. But around 1yr, she started putting on weight and at 3.5yr is now 75th for both height and weight so perfectly proportion (and more in line with DH and I who are 6'2 and 5'7). We also had big feeding issues and the gain definitely coincided with getting fully into solids. I'd have never believed it at the time but it all came good.

I had high blood pressure in her pregnancy and high pressure in one of my uterine arteries. The HV said that sometimes it can affect baby's growth in utero and then they settle in their more natural place once weaning gets going.

Monstersare · 20/11/2024 19:39

I had one about the same age/weight as yours. Shes now 18, a model and about to ace all her A Levels. I wish I had known that then 😂 we had SO much fuss about her weight from the HV and so many tears from me! Turns out she was just a tall, slim human…

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 20/11/2024 19:45

My 3.5yr old DS has always tracked between 3rd - 5th percentile in weight. We had bloods taken when he was younger to check for any issues but all was fine.
I was equally tiny growing up (now a normal weight and height!), so not particularly concerned re health, though I do worry about nasty comments as I was bullied for being so skinny. For some reason people don't seem to think twice about commenting on skinnyness.

BTW I can recommend Zara trousers for little waists but long legs! They're the only ones that stay up.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 20/11/2024 19:56

My DS was similar to yours. Small, skinny and light.

He's a handsome 15yo lad, still a bit smaller than his friends, still skinny but fit and healthy.

If you are unsure, please see your GP, we did to rule out any health issues. If nothing else, it will give you peace of mind.

cheeseonwheels · 20/11/2024 20:01

My youngest was like this, she was born at 6lb but just didn't seem to grow much. she didn't walk until 20 months and was in6-9 month clothes and we couldn't get shoes small enough for her. She's now 11 and not the smallest in her class anymore, she's still one of the shorter ones but she's definitely caught up in the last 2 years.

cannynotsay · 20/11/2024 20:03

Mine was tiny, and she was an early walker.... get ready lol! As long as they are ok, I wouldn't worry about sizes. Mines 2yr 7 months and is in 18-24 months it's all a guide x

Stressheadshouldbeinbed · 20/11/2024 20:27

My 3 year old has just moved into 12-18m clothing and wears size 4 pull ups to bed. He’s always been small and people are always surprised by his age but he’s strong and healthy! My daughter (5 years old) is currently the tallest in her class but was small for her age as a baby/ toddler too!

yogpot · 20/11/2024 20:33

This whole thread makes me feel better. My 2yo (27 months) is tiny - just gone into 12-18m clothes, is probably under 11kg, height is just under 2nd centile. I worry about it all the time!

It is also quite funny though because his speech is freakishly advanced so people think I have a 12 month old that’s cutting about talking in perfect, full sentences. Get comments everywhere we go! But that also makes me sad because it’s constantly being pointed out to him that he’s different.

paristotokyo · 20/11/2024 20:36

My eldest was born 0.3 centile and now at school is one of the shortest in their reception class but not by a huge amount. Catching up slowly I think. Signed off by paeds at 2 years as was tracking fine at their own pace. Healthy and very active. Also was a very early walker (we got weird looks also) so it must be a thing!

Snailandwhales · 20/11/2024 20:39

@paristotokyo did you get referred to paeds? As no one seems interested in checking my DS for anything! He was 5lb when born and now tracks just above the 0.4 centile line

OP posts:
Snailandwhales · 20/11/2024 20:39

He’s been an early crawler and he can pretty much stand with minimal support so maybe there is truth in small babies being early walkers!

paristotokyo · 20/11/2024 20:39

Should add they also wore clothes 1-2 sizes smaller than they were. So wore 3-6 months when actually 10 months old. Now wearing mostly the correct size despite being bit short.I wouldn't worry, we all come in different shapes and sizes and plenty of time yet for them to catch up.

paristotokyo · 20/11/2024 20:41

We were with paeds already due to being SGA at birth

Snailandwhales · 20/11/2024 20:43

That’s interesting as my DS was born below 2nd centile and no one has ever really mentioned it, besides saying my next pregnancy would be high risk, and obviously I had an induction and a csection because of size. It wasn’t picked up until I was 39 weeks pregnant though I was having growth scans they weren’t very clear on the measurements.

anon202420252026 · 20/11/2024 20:52

Don't worry, kids come in all different shapes and sizes.

Ds was not much heavier than that at that age.

Dd was near your lo weight when she was born (11lb 4oz)

They're all different.

StampOnTheGround · 20/11/2024 21:04

A little different but my little boy was born huge weight wise and just flew down the percentiles (he was 15lbs at 7 months) and is a little lower in the height percentiles than weight now at 2.5.

They had brief concern at the start, as he had started life on the 98th percentile! But when they saw him develop the older he got, nobody cared - he's just supposed to be small.

Another vote for small babies being early walkers, as he was walking at 8.5 months! 😳 prepare yourself haha

Mourningmorningsleep · 20/11/2024 21:28

Mine was born 3.3 kg and just didn't grow much, dropped down to 0.4 centile by her 1st birthday. HVs freaked out and the weighings were constant but the GP was only mildly worried and the NHS pediatrician rolled his eyes and said "every day I see sick children, yours isn't one of them". She's caught up quite bit once she got better at eating age 3+ and is now in 2-3 clothes at age 4 which I'm happy with. Developmentally normal, early walker (10 months). Looked like a walking newborn, strangers commented a lot. Since early walking seems to be a theme on this thread, I guess brace yourself and good luck finding the tiniest first walker shoes in the market. And with potty training you really find out how much nappies hold their trousers up.

To summarise, everyone worried but everything is fine. Enjoy all the hand-me-down clothes from their bigger friends!
