Anyone else got a tiny baby?

My DS is 7 months old and only weighs 14lb, he was born at full term 39 weeks but he was very small then. I’m keep waiting for a growth spurt but his weight gain is very slow! He still wears size 2 nappies and is only just in 3-6 clothes.

Everytime we go to activities with other babies he’s always by far the smallest. Developmentally he’s fine, he’s been crawling since 6 months and babbles away. But I’m getting worried he’s going to be 5ft when fully grown or still in baby clothes when he starts school! Has anyone else got a tiny baby? I feel like the only one.

My daughter has always been a good weight but tiny. She was in 0-3 months close until nearly 6 months. She's 4y3m now and is in a mix of 1.5-2 and 2-3 clothes! She's was in 9-12 months clothes for a whole year. At her lowest was on 1st percentile for height. The best she's done recently is 4th.
She's started school as one of the youngest and she is probably the smallest in her class but there are 3 or 4 children in her class that are only a little taller than her. It was hard to find a school uniform to fit her as the smallest size was 2-3 and she had only just gone into this size and some were huge on her! We had to delay toilet training by a month to wait until she went into 18-24 month clothes as they were the smallest knickers I could find

She has reflux and allergies which she hasn't outgrown but means she's regularly reviewed by the paediatricians and dieticians. They are happy that's she's following her lines. I'm 5ft2 and my partner is 5ft11 although was tiny as a child. My daughters projected height as an adult is 4ft10 to 5ft2.

Is it worth her seeing the GP? It may be a growth issue that could have benefitted from hormone treatment.

I did take her to one after being pestered by one of the health visitors. As it is I’m 4ft 11 and her dad’s 5ft 4, and we have family even shorter. Being below average doesn’t necessarily mean theres something wrong with you. We do have a weird mix of genes in both of our families which generally means that you’re either going to be unbelievably short or above average height wise. In both my and my oh families, our mums below average, dads and 2 siblings in each are extremely short, and then oh has a brother who is just under 5ft 11 and my sister is 5ft 6 🤷🏼‍♀️

My DD was tiny for about the first 7 months until she started on solids. I bf her for 5 months but she struggled to put weight on and I wanted to partly ff but was told not to. When I look back at pics she’s so skinny and I feel guilty but she’s a healthy 11 year old now.

People on here are going to think I’m lying and I’ve no way to prove otherwise, but my eldest dd was wearing size 3-6 when she was 18 months old. She was also still bald, her hair started growing when she was 2. She was also walking at 9 months and a very early talker. We’d have people filming her in the street/restuarants etc as she looked barely more than a newborn baby who was running around and talking. She’s now nearly 17 and won’t allow us to measure her height, but her 12yo sister is already taller than her at 4ft 7. She’s also in only size 1 and a half shoes and her sisters wearing 4. Me and their dad are very short but she very much feels like she drew the short straw (pun intended) as her younger sister is clearly going to be far taller than her

She's smaller than 4 foot 7 at 17?

Yep. And also in the last few years shes been in the top 3 in the youth tae kwon do olympics, and is currently the champion british boxer in her category. I could point out to her that her height technically also qualifies her as a little person, except she’d probably leather me. She forgets it worked in her favour when she was little and was obsessed with dance and drama classes, she was scouted as tinkerbelle by multiple production companies every year for pantos, as she was at an age where she could memorise massive scripts but basically looked like a real life tinkerbelle. Thats after she finally grew out of her baldness and her lovely golden curls came in 😂

Yes but most follow parental height so it’s worth flagging if they don’t. In the majority of families there’s a general trend. Nothing wrong with being short but if it’s not in keeping with the rest of the family it’s worth looking into.

Fair play. My mum is 4 foot 10 and my sister 1 inch taller. I got to 5 foot 3 and am still told I'm tiny so it must be all the time for your daughter. The comments would annoy me

Thats why it’s pretty unmentionable in our house, she’s the opposite of soft in general, but the slightest comments or joke about her height and she’s in tears. She’s lived a charmed life so far with the opportunities her stature has given her, but the chip has become so big due to all of the comments I think she may need therapy for it one day. She spent the first few weeks of secondary school in tears due to the comments and stares, I even had to have her form tutor pulled as he’d made up a nickname for her not realising it was upsetting her. Her age and size is the first thing almost every person mentions when meeting her, especially as she now has nose/conch/tragus piercings and pink streaked hair and people still think shes a young child. She came out of her first job interview upset last week as the manager wouldn’t believe her age. And she’s taken to thumping her sister after she recently became taller than her, as her sister repeatedly sidles up to her to compare heights to wind her up. I don’t even know who to tell off in that situation 🤦🏼‍♀️

DS1 was around 5kg at birth and has a small boned build but is around 5 ft 10 as an adult but very slim. DS2 was slightly less at birth but is now 6ft 2 at 18 and not thin.

DS1 was an early walker and talker and spoke in full sentences at 2.2. We had lots of about turns when out and about.

DS2 had speech delay and was the size of a 5 year old at 2 years old. It was assumed he had LD even when he started school but is now doing masters degree in mechanical engineering.

I don't know which was worse but neither were ideal from their perspective. Other people's perceptions are such a drag.

You just have to love/parent the child/children you have.

I used to do that to my sister. I feel bad now. She was awful though.

I was the same size as my little sister. She is nearly 4 years younger than me. She used to mock me and belittle me for being small when i was 14 ish and she was 10. We are now adults and I'm 5ft2 and she's 5ft3 and no longer comments on my height!
I'm 1 of 3. Eldest was under 0.4th until 1, on the 0.4th until 2 then 50th percentile. I was 2nd percentile as a child. Youngest always pretty average. There's 2 inches between the 3 of us and all slim build and share clothes. Our sizes as children wasn't a huge indicator of our adult sizes.

SidekickSylvia · 21/11/2024 17:08

My youngest was 6lb, and had just about doubled her weight at 6 months. She was 2nd and 4th centile for weight/height. Our HV was concerned because my 3 older babies had been about 10lb, and I'm 5'10", so it was a bit unusual for our family. I just thought she was like my petite mother in law, so I wasn't really worried, and she remained one of the smallest in her class throughout primary. She caught up at secondary, but didn't reach my height. Try not to worry op, he'll probably catch up later.

Hey, my son was 4lbs 9oz when he was born. He's in 18-24m on bottom, although some are still too big and fall down, but 2-3 on top. He will be 3 next month.

He can't talk and he is very delayed with his development. He was born at 36 weeks due to restricted blood flow from placenta and he stopped growing too in the womb. I had low Papp-a so not sure if that's something to do with it.
