Please need some advice, dropped my phone on babies head. She hit it out off my hand she instantly screamed however calmed down with a bottle, she took bottle & went to sleep. Little red mark above her eyebrow but she’s okay other than that. Should I take her to get looked over? Mum guilt is absolutely killing me

As they become more mobile (I.e a danger to themself and others) you begin to recognise when they are really hurt. And it will amaze you how robust they actually are. The first fall off the bed/ down the stairs/ backwards off the sofa you panic. Then you start to have a benchmark, like “oh that faceplant down the garden step was way worse than the bump getting them into the car seat”. The fact she settled quickly tells you everything you need to know. When they don’t settle that’s an “oh sh*t” but those moments are surprisingly rare given the danger young children attract 24/7.

I did the same when mine was about 2 weeks old. Was a velcro baby (eventually CMPA diagnosis) so always in sling. Ate most my meals with him in it, a bit of kitchen roll on the top of his head to catch crumbs. Licked some chocolate off his face once that I dropped and melted on.

Pretty much anything else you hold can get dropped on baby so just bear in mind. No hot drinks, super hot food etc.

She will be fine! I dropped a full Muller yoghurt all over my newborn whilst she was sleeping. She is currently cooking carbonara in the kitchen before she goes to work, doesn't seem to have done any lasting damage.

This made me giggle. The memories of me eating breakfast holding the baby then looking down and seeing a strawberry/insert any food item that had fallen off my plate on babies head...

It happens OP. Don't beat yourself up over it

I did this with my DS when he was a newborn. He did a huge big startle reflex and then screamed until I fed him. Felt awful but it was fine.

I mean, I don't think anyone has ever been seriously injured by a yoghurt to be fair

It's almost a right of passage in parenthood that something like this happens. It makes you feel awful but it can also be a warning to be more careful eg hot drinks etc.

I also hit myself in the face with my phone (not intentionally!) but when I thought I learned my lesson from dropping it on my baby. I decided to hold it high above my head in bed to avoid it dropping on ds.Didnt think what would happen to me if I dropped it. Never dropped my phone on ds or me again!

The first time I drove alone with my first baby I looked in the mirror and my baby had what looked like a giant growth on her head. It was a snail
that must have fallen on her from a tree. I literally screamed and pulled over she was fast asleep oblivious.

Baby will be fine.
I remember going to a GP appointment with my two week old first born. My name was called and my bag slipped off my shoulder and clonked him on the head when I stood up to pick up his car seat. I was mortified, especially as the woman sitting opposite laughed out loud.
Nearly 28 years ago and I’ve never forgotten it, didn’t do him any harm though. He’s now teaching in a secondary school.

Oh I’m sorry that I’m laughing so hard !

Catterbat · 27/10/2024 21:11

Is the phone okay though?

I remember my pfb cutting herself with a card flyer from Boots. When I was next in there I pointed out to one of the workers that they may want to think about their choice of advertising on card 🫣 I don’t know why I thought this was reasonable.

That made me smile!

I’d say congrats for getting to 4 months before doing this. Pretty sure I’d done this multiple times by then! Also was known to have kids sporting a wig of slopped super noodles. All kids are fine and functional humans now they’re grown.

Just writing it down makes me want to laugh and cry and the same time!

Throwawayagain1234 · 27/10/2024 21:21

Dropped my 10 day old onto his head. On concrete. It was an impressive bump but I think I cried most. Masters in maths now, possibly I knocked some sense into him?

Youcantwinthemall · 27/10/2024 21:22

Another she’ll be fine. I had my (2 months prem) teeny tiny daughter in the crook of my arm. She was about three months old. Her twin cried as I was exiting their room. I swung round and walloped her teeny tiny head on the door frame. Was convinced I’d killer her. She was fine. She’s now ten and arguing with me about more screen time 🙄😂😍

I think a full pot of yogurt and a mobile phone are pretty comparable weight wise though. One is a lot less messy.

i did this, felt horrendously guilty, dc1 screamed then settled quickly, when they were asleep i lay down on my bed and decided the best thing to do would ne to drop my phone on my own face just to see how much it hurt 😂 looking back it was one of my less sane pfb moments 🙈 she will be fine op

Oh this is golden 🤣🤣🤣

Oh my goodness this exact same thing happened to me! My then four-week old, at a hospital appointment as he wasn't well, and the changing bag slipped off my shoulder onto his head when I went to pick up his car seat! I still feel really guilty about it

wonderstuff · 20/02/2025 16:12

I dropped a glass shampoo bottle on dd head when she was 6 weeks, DH also threw her into a steel beam at about 6mo (he was throwing and catching her and didn’t realise the beam was so close). She’s now doing A-levels and seems to have not been damaged by either incident. I was so upset at the time though!

SiobhanSharpe · 20/02/2025 16:18

Honestly, OP, we've all done this in one way or another.
We know you feel absolutely terrible about it. But she seems fine, keep a watchful eye on her for next few hours.
(Of course you will, we've all done this too!)

lovemycbf · 20/02/2025 21:43

I trapped my babies fingers in a door once
I didn't realise he had put his fingers by the hinge side and I shut the door
I've never felt more guilty in my life and couldn't stop crying
He was obviously upset but apart from bruised fingers he was ok
I did however get him checked out by a doctor

raysan · 20/02/2025 22:11

She will MORE than pay you back over the coming years

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 20/02/2025 22:36

I’m impressed you got all the way to 4 months!

Both of mine got it before we even left the hospital.

Word of warning. This will happen again.

We’ve also accidently trapped fingers, bounced up into a (n unexpectedly low) ceiling beam, had falls off the bed. Independently they’ve managed to fall off a wall
mounted speaker (that was an impressive one), run mouth first into a fence post, fat lips from faceplanting, head butted my tooth (needed it fixing, £142 down!) and got all manner of eggs on their heads from various wtf moments.

I’ve got a pretty high threshold for when they need medical attention now.
